"Is This a Dream?!" - A Surprise Trip Report

Date: Thursday, September 20th – Sunday, September 23rd

Location: Port Orleans French Quarter

Cast: Me (Jess), Shawn (my awesome DH), Brandon (just turned 7), and my BFF and her DH

This trip came on the heels of a wonderful 9-day family trip in August (16th-25th at All Star Movies). I have started writing my TR for that one, but haven't gotten all of my Photopass+ pics uploaded yet. It definitely made coming home from that trip A LOT easier knowing that we were going back in a month! Here is one of my favorite pics from that trip:

A little history on how this trip came to be: over the past year, Brandon mentioned over and over how much he wanted to go to the Magic Kingdom for Halloween. Halloween is a big deal around our house, and the Disney merchandise starts showing up in the stores right before our August trips are over. We had never even considered it, since we were just there in the summer, there is school on Halloween, etc - we really didn't think it was possible. This year, we had APs, and we started thinking – maybe we could make it happen. I realized a couple of months ago that there was a teacher work day on Sept 21st, which was also a party day, and it was the weekend after Brandon’s birthday. Great timing, AND he wouldn’t have to miss school! On top of that, I had earned a free flight, and we would share room costs w/ another couple. Our friends had gone on their first WDW trip with us in March (a long weekend, adults only), and they also went back at the end of June by themselves. However, that was the week that a tropical storm came through, so they had a pretty miserable time. This trip was a mini do-over, and I was excited to show them a good time. Seeing as it was such a short trip, we only had one chance to do each park right, so the pressure was on!

To keep everything a secret, we packed our suitcases after Brandon went to bed at night, and we told him on Thursday morning that if he had a great day at school that day, his aunt & uncle (which is how he refers to our friends) would come over and we’d do something special. He suggested Monkey Joe’s. That afternoon, we snuck our suitcases into the car, and then I snuck out of the house and went to pick up our friends. They live on our street, so we quickly returned with the luggage covered with a blanket. We all piled in the car, with him thinking we were off to bounce on some inflatables at Monkey Joe’s. After about 5 minutes, I turned around told him (in a very serious voice) that we weren’t going to be able to go to Monkey Joe’s today. His face fell, and he asked why. I told him we had to go somewhere else today, and then I presented him with a gift bag, and told him there was a clue inside. When he opened it, there was a WDW Halloween shirt inside that I had snuck and bought him on our last visit, and a Phineas & Ferb Halloween book. He stared at it for several seconds, then just stared at us. My friend asked him who was on it, and he replied “Mickey”. She asked what kind of shirt it was, and he said “Halloween”. She asked where Mickey lived, and when he said “Disney World”, we all shouted “SURPRISE!! We’re going to Disney World!”. This was the part where I was expecting a huge reaction – screaming, shouting, and general chaos. I got…nothing. He looked at us, then starting paging through the book. We asked him if he understood that we were on our way to the airport, and he said “you guys are teasing me, we aren’t really going to Disney World”. We uncovered the luggage, and I produced the new Mickey ears he had gotten the week before for his Mickey-themed birthday party. He still wasn’t convinced. He kept saying “Really? We’re REALLY going? Noooo…you’re just teasing”. When we finally convinced him, and told him we were going to the party, I got this face:

Now THAT is more of the reaction I was hoping for!! :)

Jess, what a great TR! I'm really enjoying reading - your costumes are amazing! Brandon looked so great - no wonder people wanted pictures of your boys - what a great costume idea. Looking forward to reading the rest!

Awesome trip report but it's so unfair to post all those lovely desserts, now I want some too!!:)

I could definitely go for a giant Disney cupcake right now. :)

Okay, where were we? Heading to the Haunted Mansion! ! Due to the rain, they weren’t doing the magic shots, which again, I was bummed about. The CMs looked awesome, and there was a ton of fog coming from the graveyard – so, so cool! I’m not sure what her name is, but this lovely ghost was standing under the covered area in the queue line, talking to guests. She interacted w/ Liz a bit, which was funny. She told her that she had seen her twin sister a little while ago, "and boy, was she a hot mess!". :)

We had about a 20 minute wait, and then got stuck on the ride for a few minutes. I didn’t mind that at all – one of my favorite rides, I was warm and dry, AND I had candy. J

When we came out of the ride…THE RAIN HAD STOPPED! We were pretty much giddy with excitement!

The announcement had been made earlier that there would only be one parade that night - the first one was canceled. We had planned to catch the second, less crowded one, but it didn't look like the crowds would be going anywhere anytime soon! We decided to head over to the Castle and find a spot to watch Hallowishes, then hoof it back toward Liberty Square or Frontierland to find a spot for the parade.

I LOVED Hallowishes! So awesome. These pictures are all from Brian's camera. I didn't even attempt to take any, for once I just sat back and enjoyed the show, which was great.

He wasn't too happy w/ the pictures that he got - he took some really spectacular pictures on his previous trip, and didn't feel like these measured up. I was just happy to be enjoying the fireworks, and to be relatively dry. :)

When it ended, we made our way as quickly as we could through the crowds. Unfortunately, people who had lined up early for the first parade that got canceled never moved, so there were no good spots to be found. We split up for a few minutes - Liz raced off to get more candy, I ran to buy a Halloween pin, and the boys found a spot in front of the Diamond Horseshoe. They stood up on a little wall in front of the trees, so they weren't blocking anyone's view, but Brian could still see for pictures, and Shawn could keep Brandon on his shoulders. Liz and I found a spot in front of them, which was on the (very crowded) second row. I admit, I was a little disappointed to not be even closer. But obviously I didn't make the commitment to stand out there like these other people had, and we were lucky to find a spot at all. If there is a next time, I will have an awesome, front-row seat!

I was really bummed that the Headless Horseman didn’t make an appearance (especially since the party pin I had bought was of him), but after seeing the video of the horse taking a fall last week, I totally understand why he didn’t ride! The parade was amazing – so, so fun! The gravediggers were AWESOME! And this guy was definitely spooky!

All of the parade shots are from Brian’s camera. The Goofy Candy Co float at the end that smelled like candy was so cool! When the CMs came by afterward handing out candy, everyone was holding out their trick or treat bags. We were in the 2nd row, and Liz literally had about 4 CMs look her in the eye and then hand the candy to another adult. I wondered if it was because she was holding out a big bag – I had bought us a couple of cute bags from the Disney Store to transfer our candy into. I handed her one of the bags we got at the party – and sure enough, the next CM who came by with candy gave her a piece. Very strange. Not that I’m complaining about getting candy – we definitely ended up with more than we could eat!

Since we had accomplished pretty much everything we were going to be able to accomplish that night, we decided to go ride some rides. We went through the trick or treat trail by Splash and then decided to ride. This is absolutely the BEST ride photo I’ve ever taken. I love it!

Brandon wanted to ride again, so we did. Then we headed back toward Tomorrowland, stopping to collect candy along the way. We saw a couple of characters out on the way (Daisy and Donald, the Pooh gang), but they all had long lines and we didn’t want to spend the last little bit of the party waiting for a character. We hit up the Werther’s stop inside the Pinnochio Village Haus, and then went on the Alice in Wonderland themed trail. Liz and I realized that we hadn’t ridden Space Mountain yet, and this just wasn’t acceptable. We had also promised Brandon he could ride Buzz, so the boys headed off in that direction while we went to Space. There was no wait, and we were hoping for another great ride photo, but this one wasn’t purchase-worthy. When we got off, we didn’t see the boys, so we decided to ride again. Another great ride, but the photo just wasn’t as funny as we’d hoped. We found the boys, and decided that since the party was almost over (and it was way, WAY past Brandon’s bedtime), we’d call it a night. On the way out, Shawn stopped by Guest Relations, because I’d heard they were offering alternatives to the regular candy. He’s diabetic, so he wouldn’t be eating any of the goodies we’d collected. They gave him 2 bags of sugar free taffy and some other sugar free hard candies. Very nice! We headed out, happy and tired.

Post-party thoughts: Was it worth it? Absolutely! Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! In fact, Liz and I have already figured out some awesome coordinating costumes if we are ever able to go again.

However, there are a few things I’d do differently – one, I’d try to go on a Tuesday night if possible, NOT a Friday! I’d also have a contingency plan ready in case it rained. And I’d probably try to wear a costume that didn’t require makeup and crazy hair that could be destroyed in the rain. In hindsight, I realized that even though I was disappointed and frustrated several times throughout the party, because it wasn’t going as planned, we DID still get to do a lot, and we really made the best of the situation. The most disappointing thing was that every single one of the Villains Mix & Mingles was canceled. I also realized later that I totally forgot about one of the characters I wanted to meet – Genie! I would really like a do-over on a dry party night. Maybe next year...
