is there ANYTHING "southern" about the Orlando area?

Other than its location, of course. For a WDW trip I'm hopefully going on soon, I will be staying a half an hour from WDW, and that's what got me thinking about all this for some reason. I know the Jax area probably has the most southern feel to it (and that many of the residents have drawls when they speak), but I've never really known about the Orlando area.

As a native New Englander having spent most of my career in Los Angeles...I can say, YES. This IS the south.

It may not be apparent in downtown Orlando or the resort areas, but if you stray too far...(cue banjo music)

Orlando is south of Ocala (where i draw the 'southern' line) so no. But what do you mean by this? :veryconfu I know southerners who live in Orlando... but the city is not one i would classify as southern. But its also no Miami... I know alot of native Miamians have migrated to Orlando due to migrations into Miami

Some of the older towns in the area have some 'southern charm,' but as a whole the area, especially newer developments, is filled with transplants from Long Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Westchester, Michigan, and Chicago.
Use this horrible example as a test: if they say "coke" they are probably southerners, if they say "pop" they are midwestern, and if they say "soda" they are northeastern.
Other than that, theres not much else to discern what is truly southern in all of those condo and mcmansion developments outside Orlando.

My family will be moving from massachusetts to florida in a couple of years and we were already looking for houses, and we were so shocked to find that parts of florida reminded us of Georgia or Louisiana once you got away from the central florida area.

I live in Windermere, and 2 of the towns next to me, Ocoee and Winter Garden are both definitely southern.

Since i grew up in the deep south its hard for me to find much southern about Orlando... you just need to get out side of the city to find it. Like Atlanta... down town isnt southern but the suburbs are. Thankfully sweet tea is easily found all over Orlando but its on the edge of the 'sweet tea' region. :)

I have to say Orlando is NOT southern. There are smaller communities around Orlando that have some southern feeling, but it is NOT the south really at all. I would liken it more to small midwestern towns with country and southern tendencies mixed in. I guess it all depends on perspective, though. I am from Indiana going to school in Tennessee, so I have the midwestern perspective.

Orlando is like the south's melting pot. We have a running joke down here about where I'm from (South Carolina) and that I live UP SOUTH.

yeh, alabama's licence plates dont say "Heart of Dixie" for nothing. well, actually, i think to be PC i think they are changing it to the famous saying from the song/story "Stars Fell on Alabama"

There's a good mixture of different kinds of people--that's what I like about it. If it was as deep south as some other states, I don't know how I'd handle it. I had enough of a culture shock when I moved to northern Virginia.

I say Coke, but i'm from England, lol.

I've heard a few people say pop here though.

I am from the south. I say coke, if I want a coke. If I want a Mt. Dew, I say Mt. Dew. They are different drinks and taste different, so I call them by their names.
