Is Maleficent still a villain?

You know how to hate it even more?

Disney is making Alice In Wonderland 2: Through the Looking Glass their second May 2016 release, right after Captain America 3.

And as a result, they pushed Star Wars 7 ahead to December 2015.

This is a problem, you see.
Star Wars - May 25, 1977
The Empire Strikes Back - May 21, 1980
Return of the Jedi - May 25, 1983
Phantom Menace - May 19, 1999
Attack of the Clones - May 16, 2002
Revenge of the Sith- May 19, 2005

Episode VII - December 18, 2016

Not sure you have the cause and effect correct. I believe it was JJ Abrams who wanted to delay the open of the movie from May 2015 to May 2016. Disney did not want to wait that long for a release (and delay the Christmas merchandising opportunity), so they agreed to December 2015.

That would be one thing....but it's a new trend. Star Wars Spinoff 1 is going to be released in December 2016 against Avatar II.

LOVE the Wicked musical ... but I still root for Dorothy every time I see the Wizard of Oz. Maleficent is just as much a villain as the wicked witch of the west - even with a back story

Wicked and Maleficent have changed my view on both these villians. Elphaba became wicked in the eyes of everyone else but she was good. Now as for her sister she needed a house to fall on her because she was truly bad. As for Maleficent it is truly a story of redemption but it was not her fault that she became evil. Stephan in his quest for power was the truly wicked one.

Kinda makes you wonder if the Stepmom in next year's Cinderella will be re-written to be a more likeable, reasonable person and Cindy a complete opposite...

I'm not even looking forward to this...

I am, the same people who worked on maleficent are not touching this film. Also there is not twist here, this is a retelling of cinderella, not through the step mothers pov, not a what happened after film, just plain cinderella.

If cate blanchett master of the b stare is in lady tremaine I highly doubt they would let that go to waste. She is going to be a villain through and through.

It is known to adults that the stories are two different stories. The problem arises when you explain that to children. They like to ask characters questions at meet and greets. These could get tricky when a character doesn't know to answer as evil Malificent or nice/victim Malificent.

Practically every Disney movie is based on some story that has a drastically different ending. As I see it, this is no different.

I don't see why one film will make any difference to how a character is portrayed in the parks. The TV show "Once upon a Time" has been running for a few years now and they have twisted just about every story going and it's not made any difference.

That's not a meet-n-greet character, it's a band at DCA, where the regular Mad Hatter doesn't do meet-n-greets. See earlier post about animated Cruella vs Glenn Close Cruella.

Really guys, this isn't difficult.

Of course it is! We have to argue ALL points, no matter how small. lol

OUAT has definitely been turning these stories 180 degrees. Peter Pan was a little s*** on OUAT. Then you find out that he's a grown man playing a boy. Cindy was a single pregnant woman. Rumple has had his paws in EVERY story line. Mulan appears to be possibly gay. (I know this was a debated subject at one point). IMO, Aurora looks like a back stabber through the whole series. Charming is Snow's prince, not Cindy's. Somehow the WWoW is The Evil Queen's sister. Red IS the wolf and granny protects the WOLF! Now, it looks like Elsa may have a bad attitude problem.

People very easily see these movies as very different entities. Many kids didn't know Maleficient's name in the cartoon version. She was just the bad guy. Hell, recent unofficial survey showed that many people didn't even know Sleeping Beauty's real name.

There was two versions of Cruella out meeting guests at one point, at least at Disneyland, and that seemed to work okay. It matters even less when Maleficent is rarely out.

Get real, folks. The Disney animated fairy tales are not written in stone and are simply one version of the original stories. For the most part, Disney cleaned them up and sanitized them. All of the fairy tales have several versions even in their modern incarnations. If you check videos for Cinderela you will find at least a half a dozen different versions including one told from the viewpoint of the prince.
Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" has absolutely nothing to do with the original Frog Prince story. "Frozen" is VERY loosely based on the Snow Queen fairy tale as is Disney's version of Rapunzel somewhat based on the original story.

There is no reason that the Maleficient story line can't be different in two seperate movies. The normal child should have no trouble in understanding that people and stories can be different at different times. Give them some credit. I'm sure they know that their parents aren't exactly the same all the time.
