Is Maleficent still a villain?

Just saw Maleficent and the question I came away with is how we are now to perceive Maleficent and the dragon after this movie? At Fantasmic are we now going to root for the dragon since we know that the dragon/bird/man character is not evil at all and really quite a sympathetic character? And how about Maleficent? Should she really still be a part of "Unleash the Villians?" Next time I see the dragon, I think I might want to give him a hug. I'm feeling very confused right now.;)

LOVE the Wicked musical ... but I still root for Dorothy every time I see the Wizard of Oz. Maleficent is just as much a villain as the wicked witch of the west - even with a back story

Maleficent is entirely separate from Sleeping Beauty; two different stories. The parks will continue to use the animated Maleficent, just like always.

Similarly, when Alice in Wonderland was released in 2010, the Mad Hatter didn't get a red curly wig and a Johnny Depp accent - he's still the regular animated Mad Hatter in the parks. They're separate movies with separate stories.

Okay...here's what I think:

Aurora is an unreliable (horribly, HORRIBLY biased) narrator. Maleficent is told from HER point of view, given how the movie begins and ends with her telling the story.
Check it out: you have this woman, whose father was kind of nuts and sent her away for her "protection" to live with the Faerie Three Stooges/Discount Sanderson Sisters.
Yeah, it's only natural that she'd grow up resenting her situation, especially once she realizes that she was royalty all along.

And then along comes Maleficent....who is dignified, poised, walks in grace and beauty and has an aire of sophistication...and *BOOM* this girl, who so resents her father and downright hates her stupid@$$ caretakers, is instantly won over, and she chooses to believe that Mals is her saviour, her way out of a bad situation: her Fairy Godmother.

If Aurora were attempting to be a historian, anything that she published regarding the Sleeping Beauty Incident would be met with a chorus sighs and rolling eyes.

They Probably got the idea from the Disney Flip Flop Book "My Side of The Story

You know how to hate it even more?

Disney is making Alice In Wonderland 2: Through the Looking Glass their second May 2016 release, right after Captain America 3.

And as a result, they pushed Star Wars 7 ahead to December 2015.

This is a problem, you see.
Star Wars - May 25, 1977
The Empire Strikes Back - May 21, 1980
Return of the Jedi - May 25, 1983
Phantom Menace - May 19, 1999
Attack of the Clones - May 16, 2002
Revenge of the Sith- May 19, 2005

Episode VII - December 18, 2016

I bring up what the Nostalgia Critic Said about this Movie..

Quote from Nostalgia Critic - Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland
What should've been a match made in heaven, turned into a needlessly complicated storyline from a seemingly simple source material. How can a movie based on a pointless book be even more pointless by trying to give it a point? On top of that, the film thinks that the more evil it can make the villains, the more interested we'll be in our heroes, rather than just writing the heroes interestingly. You can make it dark, you can make it intense, but unless you have a coherent story and characters that have a little bit more charm than snake vomit, it doesn't amount to anything! Sometimes the visuals are nice, and once in a while it brings out a little bit of the zaniness from the book, but most of it misses the spirit, the charm, and yes, even the wonder that made Alice in Wonderland so great.

Unfortunately, these folks never caught on that "Maleficent" is an actual adjective.

Turning Maleficent into the hero is kind of like giving General Grievous superhuman healing abilities.

Had no idea.

Well, it raised a bit of a ruckus in the nerd community. All the continuity addicts pointed out how the three of them have killed many many innocents and blah blah blah, totally missing the point of the story and how it wasn't meant to be taken literally.

As far as hamfisted comic book takes on current social issues go, that one was relatively not bad.

I'll have to hunt it down and check it out. Thanks

I viewed the movie as being beyond the cartoon. The cartoon shows her during her mean, villian time. Now we see the continued story. My take. I think we will continue to see both, although they better do some dern good make up on the CM for the live character lol

They're two separate stories. That's why all the character names aren't all the same (the three fairies). Maleficent is totally separate from Sleeping Beauty. It doesn't negate or change the animated film. They're totally separate.

Maleficent in the animated film is pure evil, that's not changing. The new movie is a reimagining in live action, with a different looking Maleficent - think alternate universe.

They're independent of each other. Doesn't change Fantasmic or Dream Along or anything like that.

No, they are two different tellings of the same story. Some key plot items are different, but that could have been explained by "who" is telling the story. *Spoiler alert* Of course that is not possible when you find out at the end of the movie who is telling the story.

Yes, Disney will keep the two versions separate. The parks will continue to follow the animated version of the story. There may be occasions where the Angelina Jolie version is in the parks, but I doubt there will be any incorporation of the retelling into any attractions or shows.
