Is it crazy to fly to Orlando for a weekend Disney trip?

Okay here's the back story.

My wife and I just had a beautiful son a month ago. Needless to say 2011 is almost a write off for a trip which is fine because we did a lot of nice trips prior to him being born (2 to Orlando, Dominican, Cuba) over the last 3 years.

However, once things start to settle down and there is a routine in place a weekend trip or two in 2011 will happen. We both have very supportive parents and my mother the other day just out of the blue wonder where we would like to travel this year. I wasn't even thinking of it and I figure it's too soon for a week long vacation but maybe a long weekend getaway is do-able. She agreed to look after our son whenever it happens.

So, I have this crazy idea of flying Friday morning out of either Toronto or Buffalo (I live in Canada) to Orlando. Buffalo has cheap flights and I figure we can use the full day Saturday and full day Sunday to go to Magic Kingdom and another park like Islands of Adventure on the Sunday since I have never seen Potter yet. Then we fly out Monday and are home Monday night.

First off, answer this...........am I crazy?
Or have others done this on a whim?
I know it will cost a few bucks but considering how much we love Disney it will be worth every penny and I am content with just staying off-site in a Super 8 hotel for three nights.

So am I nuts?

No, we've done it a few times flying from NJ (near Phila)

If you fly early enough on Friday you can almost get a full day there too.

I've done a couple of weekend trips and even an overnight once.

Whims can be expensive, but fun. :king:

If you think you'll do it a few times, seriously consider getting APs. Short stay tickets are very expensive for multiple trips.

If I could afford it...I would love to do weekend trips. I'm up in Pittsburgh...so to fly down there isn't crazy expensive but if we did it often it would be. And a 20+ hour drive is not something I could get on board with. But if I could afford just a weekend to Disney - I'd be there in a heartbeat (or...a 2 hour flight:lookaroun)

I think its a great idea!! We did it on whim a few years ago! I booked 3 weeks before and we went for a long weekend - 4 days at the parks!

We just did this last weekend for my birthday. Flew down late Friday night, had all day Saturday and Sunday in the parks, visited family on Monday and flew out Monday night. The worst part was going back to work Tuesday!

Nope...I just totally did it a month ago. Four days total and it was perfect. Just enough to hold you over for a bigger trip! Good luck and congrats!

Wife and I did this back in 2008 after our first daughter was born. She was about 7 months old and my wife's mom came from Mississippi to Texas (where we were living at the time) to watch our daughter for 4 days while we took a 4 day weekend to Disneyland.

It was nice break from the daily grind as our closest family member was 6 hours away so we rarely got out much before we moved back home to New Orleans.

If your crazy, I am crazy because we have started to do that as well!

However our weekend trips center around Star Wars Weekends. So far it has worked out quite well and I live in North Eastern PA. Hey, its a trip to the World and typically beautiful weather... so if you can swing it, do it!

You are a sane and well adjusted man. If you have the financial ability, go. You only get so many chances in life to do things such as this. As for me, I must now focus on the end of a rain delay at Fenway.

I wouldn't recommend it for a first trip, but once you've seen it all (or most of it) once, it's not a big deal at all. If you can afford it, by all means. I've definitely done it - though sometimes I look at the $ and realize I could stay longer for not that much more, other times 2-3 days is just right to see what you really want to see.

As I continue to wait for the tarps to be lifted, I will tell you that there are few baseball experiences that compare to a game at Fenway Park. A small park, tiny seats, and a crowd of over 30,000 people who are unified in their desire for a win. Yawkey Way has a carnival atmosphere, and the air is filled with the scent of sausage and peppers. When you're done with your Disney trip (which I still recommend), plan a trip to Boston. You won't regret either trip.

My best experiences in Baseball were at Fenway:

Fenway Franks with Gulden's mustard! :slurp:
The atmosphere of the game in that park is amazing!
The drop-dead gorgeous young lady in short shorts and a light T that I loaned my jacket to on a chillier-than-expected summer evening... [she had the most tantalizing goose-bumps] :lookaroun

(I post this while watching the Sox game in the 7th. I think there are all of 1000 people left in the stands after that insanely-long rain-delay.)

Anyway, back on-topic...
My shortest visit to WDW was a 3-day/2-night side-trip while a friend and I were on the gulf coast for a week.
But my shortest Disney-only trip was a 3-nighter, Friday-to-Tuesday for my friend's wedding in '09. I got one day in at Epcot, and was able to use the free ticket to Universal I got from the Super Bowl promo that year.

I also just planned a friend's two-nighter trip for next month. I'll be down there for 8 nights, and he and his girlfriend decided they wanted to come down for a few nights, so they'll be there Saturday-to-Tuesday with 2 days in the parks.
They knew full-well that they wouldn't get the cheapest rates (they ended up going with the Hilton on HPB rather than a Disney resort), and also that if they'd known they were going to take this trip they would've gotten APs when they went last fall.

I'm sure they'll have a blast, especially as they have a very short "must-do" list.

Yes you are crazy. Next question.

No your not crazy though I may be with these conflicting responses.

If you can do it then go my distant Nothern friend. I did this with Disneyland once and it was a blast.

I would love to be able to visit for 2-3 days but coming from the UK not really possible, takes me 16 hours from my house to stepping foot on WDW, can go to DLP but just not the same (and SO expensive)
But if someone can actually come up with a workable 'Stargate' or 'Beam me up Scotty' I will be first in line!
