"Now is the time..." was the song I grew up listening to on COP. From my first visit at 2 when WDW first opened it was our favourite song to sing on the way to Florida. Perhaps it was not the "original" song when COP first opened in the world's fair, but it is the original song at WDW, when General Electric sponsored it. Apparently, when GE pulled their sponsorship, they also took the song with them. I still prefer it to "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow".

Today was so sad.

The voices for the Father, Son and Dog were not working in the final scene. They would still move their mouths as if they were talking but there was no voice coming out, everyone else's voice was working fine. It was even sadder because the theater was packed (3/4th full). Hopefully it wasn't most of these people's first time, wouldn't want them to give up on such a great ride.

That is very sad, I agree. Must have been very awkward, too.

This is great news to hear, though!

That's very true.

Don't kill me but I myself hate this ride (Just seems really outdated) but they can still keep it for old time's sake. I wouldn't care. I just wouldn't ride.

That's completely fine, all opinions are welcome.

Do you hate the ride just because it seems outdated?

No. It's just kinda strange. I mean compared to all of the newer technologies disney has now, it just doesn't really entertain me as well. I guess I'm a hard audience.

I may agree. I think the story is great, but I would love to see the technology executed in the show updated.

Well, it was created for 1964's World Fair. That would explain the technology part. But whatever suits your flight of fancy! :)

Myron,
It may help to use the "search" feature on this forum to find the answers to many of your questions. You've already asked this question about the CoP on the General board and you asked about the monorail which has come up at least once a week here.
Re-Welcome to the boards, it looks like you've been gone a while. You must have a trip coming up! :)

How old was I?

Here's a question I hope someone can help me with:

I was born Dec 5th, 1962 and I remember going on the Carousel of Progress at the New York World's Fair. I remember being very impressed at the people "appearing and disappearing"; I don't remember much else about the World's Fair. I'm assuming that it was in the summer of 1964, so I would have been less than two years old at the time. Does anyone know the actual dates that the New York World's Fair ran?

If I'm right, than seeing Carousel of Progress would have to be my earliest memory. Maybe that's why I drag my wife on it every time we're in WDW.

The Carousel of Progress is open; I was there last week and I rode it three times in the time I was at the Magic Kingdom. The old Timekeeper (Metropolis Science Center) is being refurbished inside the facility, but there is no tell tale sign of "outside" refurbishment to the building.

"...first star I see tonight..."

I agree - they really need to update the final scene. How difficult would it be to dress the "family" in modern clothes. Surely, Disney could afford a new dining set - that 80's version drives me crazy every time I see it!! Every time I go, I hold my breath waiting for the final scene - hoping that maybe they have updated - only to be disappointed!

That's an 80's ending? The one with Grandma in a virtual reality helmet and Dad setting off the voice activated oven??? :veryconfu

I saw the COP when I was 6 years old, at Disneyland in 1967. I was chuckling at this quote because I would have described my memories the exact same way. People appearing and disappearing, and also the big turning theater. The COP is part of the reason that I am so hooked on Disney.

The next time that I was at Disneyland was in the spring of 1975. I had been looking forward to seeing the COP again. Imagine my surprise when it was America Sings! I really liked that show too, but was disappointed that it wasn't COP.

Then later that same year I was at WDW for the first time. Holy smokes! COP was there! WOW! I didn't remember the song well enough to realize that it had changed, but was soooooooo excited to see the "big girl" spinning and singing!

I didn't visit WDW (or Disneyland) again until I took MY family to WDW in 1998. We rode COP several times, and my kids (particularly my daughter who is now 17 years old) became "hooked" as well. She often describes COP as the one attraction that cannot be missed. She sings the song to her friends (cool teenagers!) when she describes her now ANNUAL visits to WDW. My othe kids love the attraction too. The few times that it has been closed during our visits in recent years have been big disappointments.

I really think the attraction is still relevant in today's world. I mean...my kids LOVE the thing. Everyone who I have taken on it over the past 8 years (lots of folks!) has enjoyed the attraction. Yes it needs an update and some serious TLC. But it is PURE Disney magic. Just the right combination of elements to hit the "sweet spot" for families. A theme song that seems to fit today as well as yesterday. (Not an easy thing to do......look at some of the songs that if sung today get condemned by kids).

Are the counts down? I see the theater 1/2 to 3/4 full whenever I ride it. Even when the park is slow. I hear people singing the song as a group and laughing about their experience. I know that I am an easy target because of the connection to my youth, but sometimes these classic attractions just need a little care to be relevant again. Look at how popular the Tiki Room is at Disneyland these days! They completely rebuilt the attraction but kept (mostly) the original show, and it is packed all day!

There is a real business case that can be made to keep COP. I hope they stop this "middle of the road placekeeping stuff" and do it! If they want the real estate in Tomorrowland then move it to Epcot. It would be great there, and with the recent improvements in Epcot (They are doing some great stuff in that park!)it could be a real winner again.

The New York World's Fair had two seasons.

Season One: April 22, 1964-October 18, 1964
Season Two: April 21, 1965-October 17, 1965

Thank you.

So, I must have gone to the second season and was therefore almost three. Thats still an awfully long time ago to remember it so clearly.

My point about the "80's version" was referring to the dining set - which it truly is - I should know, as I was married in the late 80's and had a similar set. Yes the virtual reality goggles are "90's" but come on - those clothes are seriously out of date. I repeat - how difficult would it be to change the clothes and buy some new furniture. An inexpensive way to bring the attraction into the new millenium!

My children are 11, 12 and 16 and have always loved this ride...it is always a welcome respite from the heat and a good way to rest the feet.

It perplexes me how they somehow went from the 50's to the 80's. Anyone know? It kinda ruins the whole mood. I still love it though, i went last weekend and rode it at least 5 times.
