iPhone 3G/2.0 Anyone Excited/Getting?

So, I just returned from a brief trip to the third world.

I have a 3G Iphone with no contract, courtesy of Claro Dominican Republic. I didn't lie to them, I told them it was being exported to Puerto Rico and the employee didn't care. I even paid cash. I was in in and out in under 20 minutes. If only AT&T & Apple stores were that efficient and there were no Apple fanboys in the US... I might have procured one domestically ;) They even have 2 providers that offer it, Orange and Claro. So no having to be stuck with one provider if you want this phone.

Now to wait and see how long before I can unlock it and have some fun tweaking it.

You obviously don't like the iPhone enough to buy one. Why would you buy it if you didn't like it and there were better out there? The posts you have made on here clearly solidify the fact that you don't like this phone and "you're waiting for the Bold...blah blah" but you go out and spend the money to get one? (I might add...basically in its first week of sales.)

If I didn't like something, I wouldn't buy it.

Because I although am a gadget geek, I do have my practical side. I don't want to sign a cellphone contract, at all. I'm out of contract with both Sprint and Suncom/T-Mobile at this point in time, and have no intention of signing with Claro or AT&T. When I was presented with an opportunity to get one without a contract or a 4 point ding on my credit score, I decided to get it and hang on to it till I can unlock it and toy with it on the local GSM networks.

Much like last years iPhone experiment, I'll likely tinker with it for a few weeks, unlock it, get bored, and sell it. In fact, I'm almost certain of this.

I go through cellphones like they're going out of style. My only constants are my beat up RAZR2 and my Blackberry 8830.

Doesn't everybody get the opportunity to get one without a contract? (Sure, the prices are insane...but you can.)

This generation iPhone is not much different that the first gen with the 2.0 software upgrade. Yes, where available the network is faster...and it has GPS. Those are the only differences. The tower triangulation that the first gen has works fine...so it doesn't track you as you go, but it will always find your location. I just can't fathom the idea of someone spending money on something that they KNOW they don't like. You could've kept your first gen and tinkered some more...because this is basically the same thing. Or...did you just want a white one? (I'm joking about that last line).

That being said...there are some really cool Apps out there now.

So far I've downloaded Super Monkeyball, AOL Radio, Remote, MLB At Bat, and myLite.

AOL Radio is pretty cool...it's basically radio shot directly to your iPhone for free. It's not just random stations like satellite radio though, there are CBS stations on it also.

Remote allows you to control AppleTV and iTunes from your phone...as long as your computer has a wireless connection and you are within the WiFi area with your phone.

myLite is probably as simple as you're going to get...it's a "flashlight." The screen changes bright white (and it's pretty bright in pitch black). This may sound like a dumb download but try shutting off all of the lights and walking upstairs.

It's sometimes just cheaper to buy one under contract, get the discount on the phone, and then cancel the contract paying the termination fee after 30 days.

Not in the US

"No, only available with a two-year contract." Pretty cut and dried there. We're also told that there will be no contract-free price on postpaid service; the one and only way to get in on this action will be to re-up your commitment to AT&T.

Obviously you don't know what I paid for the phone :drevil:

To be fair, this isn't the first product I've bought that I wasn't interested until the time of purchase. I bought my Power Mac cause it was cheap at CompUSA during the last week of the going out of business sale, otherwise I had no interest.

Why? I ended up turning a profit off it after I unlocked it:sohappy:

Perhaps I can do the same with this one... and sell it to another israeli Mac Fanboy  The shekel is worth quite a lot right now :D
