iPad and the Parks

I am expecting to take delivery of my first tablet (iPad 3) within the next few hours. I am curious how people use their iPads during their vacations, beyond the obvious use of Disney's Verizon app? I plan on bringing it down but was curious if it was worth bringing into the parks?

What's worrying is people will use the better rear camera to attempt to use it as a video camera. Retina screens maybe Nice but will be Very annoying for those stood behind.

I completely agree. Why someone would want to use a bulky pad as a video camera in a theme park is beyond me.

I-Pad at WDW?

Well I got the I-Pad 2 for Xmas and I love it,infact using it for this site, but we recently got a new digi camera and a new digi camcorder,so as far as photos and filming goes,I've got it covered. My friend took his I-Pad to WDW last year,I asked him " what for?" he said to tell me how busy the rides were at the parks ,too late, were already at the park.So unless iam missing something here, why would you take it to WDW ?:shrug:And don't say to e mail your work stuff, your on vacation.

I agree, not sure I would use this over my digital SLR anyway. What other uses might it be good for? Is it worth taking to the park or leaving it in the safe back at the hotel?

I carry my cell phone, My laptop and tablet stay at the villa. I have a Sony Bloggie which is about the size of a credit card and has a 10mp still camera and a video camera. I make good use of photopass and if I want to get creative I will carry my DSLR camera on a day dedicated to photography. I appreciate that people want to record what might be a once in a lifetime vacation but but a nice point and shoot or a small handheld video camera makes a lot more sense than hauling around an expensive tablet.

An Android tablet matched with a video camera, digital camera, and or smartphone can help if you don't want to bring a laptop. Or if you have a newer moto phone, you can get their lapdock accessory. These devices will let you get your data off your devices and able to be edited with something like photoshop express. Oh and they cost less than an ipad.

Oh and I would keep the tablet in the hotel room, too big to take in the parks and capturing video/photos with it is the modern day wearings socks with sandals.

I still don't understand the need to take these to the park other than to go to everyone "Hey I have an iPad!"? Like I have said in a previous thread I have seen people smash their screens trying to use them, they are not practical for a theme park.

I'm currently on "the new iPad" as I type this now lol. It's a great device (but should have a usb port by now)and I will be taking it down with me to Disney in May along with my laptop to upload my new photos..but it will stay in the room. No need to lug it around the park all day. I know I will be taking advantage of the free wifi now available in most rooms. Do the parks even have wifi access? I'm sure some locations do.

So when will we get a new flashy wdwmagic iPad app?...:D

I don't have an iPad. My youngest son (teenager) got an iPad 2 for Christmas as well. Even with an OtterBox I don't think he'd ever bring it with him in a park. Too much bulk and not any need for it. He also has an iPhone 3GS.

However, bringing some sort of laptop, tablet, etc. to access email on a vacation for work purposes is a must for my DH. There's some types of work that even when you're on vacation you still need to be available to answer questions if the need should arrise. Also, I've known people who needed to attend meetings via computer while on vacation. Is it fun? No. But it's also time you can charge to the company and be compensated for if it should occur. Just sayin', it *does* happen and not necessarily for the people in this world who looooove to work because my old man definitely lives by: Work to live, not live to work. :D

Lock the damn thing in the room safe. I don't want to read anymore threads about How someones expensive brand new husbands thing was in the room and they just stayed out till midnight and it couldn't fit in the safe and how the maid took it and your trip was ruined and Disney's response was soooo disappointing. Lock the thing in the room safe!!!

I'm on my iPad right now. And why anyone would want to bring there's to the park. I have no clue. Even the new third generation iPad has a poor camera. I carry my iPhone 4s to the parks, which im very very impressed with the camera quality on it. Take pictures on it all day. And leave my ipad in the room. They're both hooked up to the iCloud. So when I get back to the room, my pictures I took on my phone throughout the day are already on my iPad where I get to look at them, edit them, upload them, etc on a big easy screen. But bringing it to the parks. No. The picture quality on iPads is not good.

I just got back last Wednesday from 4 days in WDW with my kids and Boyfriend and he and I were amazed by the number of iPads we saw not only in the parks but on the bus as well. We saw numerous families get on the bus and everyone then whipped out their iPad until we got to where we were going. One family had 12 people and they were ALL on their iPads. I was shocked. I mean what happened to just sitting back and enjoying the scenery or ride?

A few years ago, we were on a Disney bus from DTD to the Poly. Now, you all know how crowded those things can get! This night, was a *Standing Room Only* night, a mother with 3 children dropped her Ipad, and CRASH, while Dad sat in horror and started SCREAMING at her. (While she's dealing with three kids, he was busy texting on his phone) I swore I would never bring an Ipad to the parks. It's bad enough having the phone and Itouch. Anything I need to know, or do, in any of the parks, is on those two devices. (Son also brings a water proof Canon for water parks and some rides) The laptop stays in the room, to charge and update/download the other devices.
