"Intrusion" at Spaceship Earth

Pumbas Nakasak

Heading for the great escape.
Lap Bars at Disney, what would Walt say.

If people cant behave I can see the bean counters and lawyers insisting that all rides have shoulder harness.

Actually, the bean counters may be just as big a supporter of not having restraints. There is a balancing going on here. The risk of injury vs. the cost of retrofitting every vehicle with a restraint, maintaining those, and having cast members trained on those. As bad as it sounds, Disney gets a LOT more responsibility if the attraction has restraints. With the current warnings, Disney can argue an assumption of risk. Granted, they would settle most cases to avoid negative public press, but if the injury or death is egregiously someone's fault (or the settlements fail), they have a much stronger argument. Therefore, the bean counters aren't always for locking people in with 5 point straps.

Jeez! That is so dangerous! So many limbs could get caught in the track or machinery...scenery could collapse (not all of it is structural...belive me i'm a scenic design student!), and it is so dark in there! I agree that those peeps should be tarred, feathered and sent to universal....:)

We saw 2 kids climb out at SM once. The CM's handled it all very quickly and very diplomatically, then escorted them to the front gate of MK.

I believe thats one of those "i heard" stories, like the person standing up on Space Mountain. That never happened either. At least, no one got decapitated by standing up.

sad to say that it is true... when i was a cm, i did an in-depth tour of the HM, and my trainer told us about a guy that climbed out in leota's room, and was headed to Leota's table.

what guests don't realize is that they are actually many feet above the 'floor' of the attraction, and the area around leota's table was a drop off to the bottom.

now there is a wire grill/cage that surrounds leota's table 'just in case' but the area behind the doombuggies is still a drop off (over a slight wall).

whether this is 100% true or not, i can't say, only because i didn't see it with my own eyes, but having heard it from sources, and then being told on my HM tour as a CM, really made me believe it.

the sad thing is that these guests are on vacation, not thinking, and don't think you can 'get into trouble' at disney...

I witnessed a kid do the same thing on SSE in May 2003. When the cm came to see what was going on, everyone pointed out who it was. (No one was very happy, since it had stalled the ride and caused a big delay for everyone.) I believe the kids were kicked out, but I didn't wait around to confirm. They were still waiting for security to take them away when we left. They were kids on a school trip, probably their senior trip. This was during the time of grad nights.

I also know of someone attempting to climb out of splash once. That guest lost their footing, fell into the water, and died when he was crushed by the next boat. Disney isn't joking when they warn you to stay seated with all body parts inside the vehicle at all times. You wouldn't believe how many people stand on splash as it goes down the mountain... :brick:

The ride was shut down for 15 minutes yesterday, as they had an "Intrusion"--meaning someone climbed out of the ride. Anyone know how often this happens there??

Hey! I know you! ;)

Yea, people are dumb. I am sure it happens pretty often since some people are just... stupid.

I've heard that one before too.

There have also been several people killed by the WedWay Peoplemover (TTA) too. It's out on snopes.com

The boat-driven attractions can be VERY dangerous. When I worked at LwtL, we are able to cross the boats while they are in motion (Trivia: This is the only attraction where CMs can cross ride vehicles while the attraction is in motion). We were warned and trained profusely about spots and technique so that we would not fall in. The boats with the pressure system (i.e. Pirates, LwtL, IASW, etc.) take an incredible amount of force to stop. We had an EStop one day and had to stop a boat from hitting the next one. It took 8 of us to stop the boat just from its momentum. Granted the LwtL boats are larger than others, but all of them still have plenty of force to pin and crush someone. VERY dangerous, again!

People exiting omni movers while in motion has been an ongoing problem since day one. The latest omni, JiyI seems to combat this with ride design, the new cars have higher interior walls and jumping from one to another or even front to back would be much more difficult than with rides like SSE or TTA.

I personally don't understand why people would try to jump out. I can't imagine that you could find anything interesting that you wouldn't be able to see from the omnimover.

Unless there's alcohol involved, then it all comes together.

it's simple, bragging rights. people do that to look superior, 'look what i did' kinna thing, some do it to wreck part of the ride for funny gags or for a keepsake. it's really stupid.

I worked a day filling in at SSE and I was told that I had to describe the ride as it "takes place mostly in the dark with vehicles that rotate backwards down a steep incline". they said people would often jump out as the car rotated backwards. One thing that created the most problem was that the guests would not realize that the gears would be on the side that the door of the vehicle. Once it rotates, the steps are on the opposite side and the gears are on the side with the door. This mistake causes people to walk off the ride and into moving gears. I was told of numerous people who have lost limbs on the ride.

As far as how often, I read in a thread on here not too long ago that a ride gets stopped 2-3 times a day for these. I think that was Splash they were talking about, but its basically the same thing.

1. I don't know how often it gets stopped for that, but the remainder of the time it is stopped is for the physically disabled to load.
2. At one of the recent Grad Nites, a student jumped out of the vehicle at SM. The ride stopped. Lights came on. A voice came over the loudspeaker "Go back to your vehicle and stay where you are." Disney security was there in no time to take the student to "Disney jail."
3. I heard about people throwing objects from the old skyway. Security would meet them at the end at I believe they were banned for a year.
