Hmmm. I can't access that page at the link, so I don't know. Was it talking about the turnstiles at the front of the park?

If so, I remember reading an article about a week ago somewhere that said Disney is going to start doing this thing where you can show a barcode on your phone for your ticket...totally paperless. Maybe the turnstiles construction will involved installing machines to read the bar codes on a phone.

The gist of the article was that soon you'd be able to buy your tickets via an iPhone app...then just show the barcode on your phone...and you'd never need to print a paper ticket.

Apparently, you'd be given some kind of paper ticket at the gate though because you'd need that to FastPass.

That sounds like a strange and kind of unnecessary idea, IMO. Kinda like automatic flushing toilets. Not a bad thing, but not really necessary for restrooms, or in this case, theme parks. But I guess that's just me.

The link the OP provided doesn't work for me either, by the way.

The link actually worked for me. So it does seem a little pointless to me to have to receive a paper ticket - defeats the point of going paperless, but I'm sure eventually they would make it so the fastpass machines could read the barcode too. I guess some of the questions I would have is how all of these different systems will work together. If you have the old fashioned ticket scanners and new RFID and possibly paperless tickets all happening at the same time? Could be a little confusing...

I think at Disneyland, they have tested selling people tickets on mobile devices while they are waiting in line for a bus/tram. Get people while they're already waiting in line, and then they don't need to wait in an additional line at the park. So there is at least a small window where this would be useful.

I agree... why bother with the new technology if you are going to need a paper ticket in the end? It reminds me of a co-worker I had who printed and filed all her emails!!

What it also does is save on payroll if the whole process becomes automated. If you go completely RF not need for a ticket they can issue wristbands with the RF. There is your FP as well plus Photo Pass room key etc...

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Actually it'd make it much more difficult!
Also, this, IN CONJUCTURE with NexGen FP could very easily form a paper less system. Use your phone to get in foe the first time, then EVERYTHING else would be on an RFID bracelet or something!

I think its not really meant for vacationers staying for a week in a hotel or something. I see it really streamlining single day or first day offsite guests. They can buy on the road, arrive, park, skip the booths, and go strait to the gate to receive their tickets. For guests staying onsite, who already have a key to the world (RFID nextgen or not) and most likely take a bus strait to the gate, I don't see this affecting them in the slightest as they walk thru the gates as usual.

So not trying to be Captain Obvious.. but lets just say this system is similar to how the Starbucks app works on a smart phone. You scan the barcode at the turnstile.. and what if you dont get a paper ticket. New readers would be installed at all fastpass attractions to scan the barcode as well? Great idea right.. but what if your smart phone battery dies, then what? Then you get a paper ticket... or do you automatically get a paper ticket when you do the initial scan to enter. So then say you get the paper ticket, kinda defeating the purpose.. but what about the extra time it takes at the turnstile to print the ticket, assuming you still have to scan your fingerprint for identity purpose - if you want to re-enter but your phone died simulation, follow through the normal process and how would you differentiate between receiving 2 identical character tickets in your group.. you'd have to sign the back so you know which guest has which character ticket.

Could this be overthinking.. possibly, but from the rumors of placing phone/battery charging lockers throughout the park where you pay to charge.. maybe this is the way they are thinking. Cut the cost on the paper tickets because i really will add up over time, link the park ticket to your credit card so in the event your phone does run out of juice.. you can swipe your card at City Hall to receive a new paper ticket. Again, maybe I am putting too much thought into this but if this is the way 1billion dollars is being spent on Next-Gen.. WOW

It seems more likely that they are installing RFID readers than a totally new smartphone bar code scanning system. Anyway, aren't the turnstiles already equipped to scan bar codes, as party tickets can be printed at home and the bar code scanned for admission?

Yup. This. 100% this.

And I'm not just agreeing because the couch is uncomfortable to sleep on ;)
