Interactive Queue Etiquette

I remember a day when they didn't need to add a game to the lines. You stood and talked/bonded with your family...I think I am getting old.
Last two trips (May and Sept 2013) the interactive queue for SM wasn't working. Majority of people were buried in their phones.... which lead to people not paying attention and big gaps in the line. Which is exponentially more aggravating than playing the games

If all you did was move a few feet closer, but there's still tons of people between you and the ride, then you did nothing but cut in line and annoy people who were just trying to have fun with the things that are there to have fun with.

It's understandable if they're there for a long time, or if the end of the actual queue is way ahead of them, but if the line is just slowly moving along and you pass someone who stops for a moment to play, you're just being rude.
Mhm. And I'm also getting ahead. So what is your point?

How I long for the day people will understand that a gap in a queue has absolutely no bearing on wait time and doesn't need to be filled.

Space, Pooh, SDMT, Journey of the Little Mermaid, HM, Big Thunder, and Dumbo has a play area. Peter Pan rumored. (This is just in Magic Kingdom)
All of those, thanks. And apart from those interactive queues I have the same problem in Pirates' queue. I would love to stop and stare at the scenery a bit, but either people will pass me by which annoys me, or they don't but then I feel rushed to move on so as not to misuse their kind gesture. I've never solved this.

Oh so don't get me started on those darn devices people have their noses buried in...that is a whole other subject.

I'm a horrible parent, I don't let my kids play with them and we just move straight past. There are "boredom lifters" at Alton Towers and Chessington in the UK and my kids always always always fight over who plays with it. So we don't. My one exception is Winnie the Pooh as it is a detour and not a queue holder. I let the kids play whilst I queue conventionally. If a gap starts to form in front of the person playing my kids usually point it out and I'll say " we need to wait for these people to finish before we can move" and it usually works. What I can't stand though is being in a kiddie queue and a group of teenagers start playing. Then I replace "people" with "children" in my sentence and that usually gets them moving through embarrassment lol.

My kids would not blink being called "children" I actually call my sons 20 & 15 and their friends children on a regular basis as a term of endearment

The only time I have an issue with the interactive queue holding up the line is in the space mountain queue. If you and your family are too busy playing a game and there is a considerable gap in the line, I will walk right by you...

My point is you don't understand how lines work. If there are still tons of people ahead of that person and all you did is fill in the gap, that is line jumping. You got ahead by skipping someone who had the audacity to stop for a moment and play with something they're supposed to play with.

It's like those impatient people in line who keep bumping into your back because they think that somehow that will get them on the ride faster.

Again, UNLESS that gap extends all the way to the Fastpass/Standby merge point, FILLING IN THE GAP DOES NOT GET YOU ON THE RIDE FASTER.

Edit: Also, aren't the games usually disabled when the line isn't long enough for guests to be stopped next to them? In other words, if the games are running, stopping to play them, or waiting for people in front of you to play them, will not increase your wait time.

And if somebody were to spend the exact same time in the exact same spot but tying their kid's loose shoelaces, do you cut them in line too? And if not, what has been the difference to you?

Wow. Maybe we have been very lucky, but, I haven't been in a line that has been held up for a serious amount of time due to game playing. I don't think a few minutes is a big deal to wait. As others have said, in the end you will get on the ride in the same amount of time. I can't believe the anger that seems to come across towards others due to games that WDW installed to help people kill time. My girls are older, but they still swipe the noisemakers at HM, swipe the honey at Pooh....we FP SM or go when there is no line.

My girls wouldn't blink at being called children... my youngest daughter and my nephew are still called "the babies" by the family and esp. grandma.

don't get me started on everyone being buried in their electronic devices...that is just sad. :(

The problem is, if there are a few people that want to play with the interactive element and one stays on it too long and creates a gap, then the next wants to stay on it and creates a bigger gap, the gap keeps getting bigger then finally some kid walks up and wants to play on it but can't because dad (me) says stop touching that we have to load. When you play with an interactive element you should not just be mindful that you don't want to hold up loading but that also there might be other people that want to take a look at it. I say, try to keep the gap small and notice if others are waiting.

So, my question is ....would it be so hard for Disney to 'time it out' you know like it starts over after say 30 seconds or a minute....I'm guessing people play on these things when the lines are close to an hour long.

Now with the magic bands, they could do it. It wouldn't be too different than rapid fill mugs.

Or a quick electrical shot to the MagicBand+ to let you know it's time to "move on up"

I agree with you for the most part. Adding games seems silly but adding elements that are interactive where things talk to you in the queue or you get to blow stuff up around the ride just add to the experience. I mean why not make the line part of the overall experience with great theming and interactive elements. Just don't make the elements things that people have to put their hands all over and stop for long periods of time.
