Informations about POTC rehab

from the lastest article by Al Lutz at MiceAge:

While the pirate ship bombarding the fort will likely remain the Wicked Wench, the ferocious new compressed air cannonball effect that promises to blow hats and sunglasses (and perhaps a few toupees) into the water with each passing boat was alluded to in the latest round of concept art released by Disney. That concept art was released out in Florida for their smaller version of this ride, but the same effect will be used in Disneyland.
The Walt Disney World (WDW) version of this Pirate rehab was suspended for a couple of weeks since the operations group out there wanted to run the ride for the Easter crowds, much to the annoyance of the WDI managers. But then the WDW version of this ride remake has always been on a smaller scale and with a smaller budget, and the scuttlebutt around WDI is that the Disneyland version will truly be the masterpiece.

The last time I was on the ride, something near the cannonball scene flew into my eye. It took half the ride for my vision to clear. It hurt like heck, and I have no idea what caused it.

On an earlier trip, someone on our skiff claimed the same thing.

You should think about wearing safety goggles on the ride the next time then.

I don't really like the idea of this effect. I understand that you need to hang on to your personal belongings on thrill rides like Everest, Test Track, Thunder Mountain, and such. I just don't like the thought of having to make sure my hat doesn't go flying into the water. This seems much more like an annoyance than an enhancement.

I like it. Anything that adds to the immersion is fine with me. Well, besides actually getting hit by a cannonball of course.

Why are we getting the shaft on this remake? I mean, they started out with a much larger park than DL, yet made PotC smaller. Now, they are skimping on the remake. I guess they are spending a lot more money overall at WDW on other projects so the budget is not as high as DL's.

This happened to me too!!!

It felt like it was a hard stream of water that shot directly into my eye! (Like "Super-Soaker" force at point blank).

Everytime I ride by that section I look away from the ship!

I only have a guess:

WDW is obviously much bigger and nicer in lots of different ways. One of the ways to help keep DL from becoming a locals only park is to give it a better version of a ride when that ride is also duplicated in Florida.

Think about it. If WDW's Space Mountain and POTC, etc... were all better than Disneyland's versions, why would anyone travel to DL? They would all just go to WDW and ignore DL. This way, they get people to go to WDW because of all the obvious benefits, but they also give people a reason to go to DL.

They want to intentionally give guests reasons to go to BOTH...

That's just my opinion though.........

when will POTC be closed again for the second part of the refurb? Also I am concerned that they may not have the ride up and running with the new additions by the beginning of July deadline, because of the stop work for easter. Is anyone else concerned...

They`re not skimping on the remake - you should see the mess the attraction was in before it`s easter reopening.

WDW`s is smaller than Californias (for reasons as discussed elsewhere) and so a) dosn`t have the space for all the Anaheim FX (indeed, some of the areas don`t exist in Orlando) and b) is 6 years newer, built with better construction methods. Some of Anaheims rehab is to replace 39 year old infrastructure.

Considering that the re-opening of POTC ties in directly with the release of Dead Man's Chest, I'd imagine that they'd put all of their resources into getting it open on time. I believe that they've known about the Easter opening long enough to schedule work and allocate resources accordingly.

And, I really like the idea of the new cannon effect. I doubt that it will be too strong of an air blast--likely just strong enough to make it from the cannons to the boats and startle the guests a bit. I'd think your hats/toupees/etc. would be more at risk from the air rushing past the boats during the drop. I wonder if they'll be able to pull off the smoke ring effect from the concept art. If so, that'd be really cool.

Personally, I like POTC at WDW better than the original at DL. Since they didn't have to theame the loading area like New Orleans they didn't have that extra minute to transport you back to the pirate era. The other "extra" parts at DL were a lot of dark tunnels with no theaming until the end.

There is a smoke ring effect in the Hefalump section of the The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride at MK. If they cranked it up a few notches it would work quite well for the cannons.

Those dark tunnels are where DL is putting their new FX on. WDW's version doesn't have those tunnels so there isn't much space to put the effect on. The new DL's POTC will definitly have the edge on it.

Am I the only one thinking Al Lutz was exaggerating slightly when he said Hats and Toupee's would be blown off? I'm sure you'll feel something, but I think WDI might be a little smarter than have the cannons be THAT powerful . . .

. . . although, I did see a new line of POTC Toupee's in the ride's gift shop the other day . . . ?
