In case someone else is considering Frontier, I wanted to post this.

Don't be fooled by the initial cheap prices like I was. They get you on ridiculous extra fees, and for people traveling with kids it may be easier for you to go for that slightly higher priced flight.

When I priced tickets, the flight was $199. Great, right? Well, you will be required to pay a fee for each seat you reserve. I had to pay $12 per seat each way. Some of the seats were $24. This would add up with a family. Next, you will be required to pay a fee for all bags, including carry-ons. I selected to check my bag. The fee was $30 there and $25 back. I believe a carry-on was $60 each way. Finally, you are allowed 1 personal item. But, it's severely restricted to the size of 8x14x18. I read forums saying they will make you put your bag in that baggage test carrel. If your bag is at the gate and doesn't fit, people are reporting being charged $100 to gate check a bag.

All in all, my $199 ticket turned into a $280 ticket, and now I have to go around measuring bags to make sure I have one that will work.

Wanted to make sure others are aware of the way Frontier is operating now, especially you all traveling as families.

This is why I fly Southwest whenever I can, I know exactly what I will be paying. Plus, flying out of Islip in Long Island, instead of JFK or Laguardia, I can be from the parking lot to the gate in 10 minutes. I don't think you can cross the road from the parking lot at Laguardia to the terminal in 10 minutes.

Many no frill airlines add on fees for many of the services. Spirit Airlines is another where they offer very inexpensive tickets, but you have to watch carefully that you don't stumble into unwanted fees

Frontier offers a single additional fee which covers your choice of seat selection, a checked piece of baggage, a carry-on and no charge for refunds or changes. Cost will vary depending on the price of the flight, figure around $75 a head r/t.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'm obsessed enough with packing light that I could easily pack for a week in a backpack, with no need for a carryon -- but I hate having to pay for an assigned seat! I've done it on Norwegian, but at least in that case the airfare was so rock-bottom (something like half of what the next-best flight would cost me) that I couldn't complain.
