Yup, I had a friend who worked with musk oxen, and he had a story about a bunch of kids who thought it would be cool to climb in with them in the middle of the night cause they look so harmless... only they're huge, and territorial. They barely made it out in time.

The Shamu Adventure actually has video that shows killer whales in their element - attacking seals on the beach. It also used to show killer whales eating penguins, but they got too many complaints about that video (which, funny enough, is far less violent than the scenes left in) so it was removed from the show here in San Diego.

The penguin footage is still in here in Orlando! Yet the footage of the seals is less graphic than when they first put it in the show.

Lucky! Well, our seal footage is actually still the same as it always has been, which is what really amuses me. Apparently, here, a penguin that basically just gets plucked underwater is somehow much more disturbing to people than watching a killer whale haul out, grab a seal, and shake it aroound. :p

I work with a marine mammal rescue program in New England. Killer whales ( orcas) are NOT called killer whales because they will attack humans. Although that is not unheard of, it is unusual. People are not on a killer whale's diet. A lot of good suggestions have been posted as to why the animal may have done this. Killer whales are extremely social animals. They are toothed whales, one suborder of Cetacea. It could have been social or playing behavior. i don't know the whole story of the attack, so I can't really comment. The blue whale the person talked about in the Museum of Natural History in NYC is a different group of whales. These are called baleen whales. Generally, baleen whales are larger than toothed whales. The blue whale is largest known animal EVER to have lived on earth. Baleen, which is what is in their mouth instead of teeth looks like a gigantic broom hanging down in the animal's mouth. ( minus the handle) These animals eat small fish and plankton, basically. In the case of the blue whale, they eat primarily krill, a small shrimplike creature. They will also eat euphausids, which is a kind of plankton. They are incapable of eating a human.
