Improved Transportation?

Here we go again.

First, Monorails are widely used in Asia, and in fact some are PROFITABLE! (how 'bout that for a local bus run?).

You can't just say the bus is cheaper, because you have life use issues, service issues, and facilities. There's overhead for operators and in fact to be truely comparative you have to factor int he cost of the roadways, too. Every case is going to be different, but the benefit of busses basically revolves around the flexibility to comform to a changing demand model.

The Las Vegas monorail project is pretty much the worst project ever to be done in mass transport. There were so many problems and conspiracies that it pretty well is a joke. IT is projected at up to ten times the amount it should have been!

Listen - there is a whole thread on all these arguments - here is a link to it.

The monorail is also a huge selling point for resorts. I think it's very likely that the Monorail will be extended to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. If it's going down there, I think an extension to DAK itself, or perhaps even MGM could be possible as well, but perhaps not as likely.

Monorail Expansion... oddly enough, it was reported only yesterday that the old monorial orange from Disneyland was shipped to WDI to reverse engineer a new monorail system for the Disneyland Resort... and if all goes well, the plans will be adapted for the Walt Disney World Resort. Now at WDW, this doesn't mean a replacement of all the trains, only added trains. Something's going on. I wish I was in Glendale to ask. But as for WDW, in the near future, absoultely NOTHING is sure or planned. Well, except new busses. LOL. Hope that answers your question. :)

The monorails in use at Disneyland are nowhere near compatible with the ones at WDW. They are a much smaller scale, and could not feasibly be adapted for use at WDW. However, they could build trains based on things from the WDW trains, and adapt them for use at DL. (Keeping in mind both trains use completely different infrastructures)

Watercraft is actually more effcient than the monorails. On the cruisers we can hold up to 120 guests, where as the monorail can carry 160, on the Ferry Boat however, we can hold up to 600 yet the boat has a capacity for roughly 800. The launches can hold 40, yet at close we may run 3 of them, having a boat at the MK rougly every 3-5 minutes. If we have good pilots at the helms, we can empty our portion in 45 minutes, where as the monorail can take up to an hour to an hour and half. Busses without a doubt are the most efficient means of transportation we have. :slurp:

The Mark VI Monorail has a rated crush capacity of 364, of course, that number will never be achieved thanks to strollers. Your estimate of 160 is a bit low... during park exits, I'd estimate around 260-280 on average fit onto each train. That's about 20-23 per half car, which is very reasonable figure, and easy to achieve. Also, the Express monorail loads faster, and arrives faster than a Ferry. The reason why the Ferries may clear out thier line faster is because more people want to take the Monorail instead. Personally, I like the nighttime Ferry ride... but, most people would rather take the Monorail.

Simply Basing it on my personal experience. Oh, and when we run three boats, we usually exit more people than the rails do. The most I have seen for one hour from our boats was roughly 5700 people, which isn't bad.

Do they ever run 3 boats at a time? I have never seen that, but I have never been there at peak times.

Capacity depends an awful lot on frequency, and how cloase they are willing to get with stuff. I mean you could easily increase the capacity of the Monorail or Boats by increasing the number of vehicles and setting them closer. But regulations prohibit them from getting as close to one another as they are willing to risk with busses. It's an apples and oranges thing.

We run 3 boats very frequently, almost every night in the summer, and definitely every weekend night of the summer, usually 3 in the morning as well. Usually what happens is, while one is loading up at either side of the lake, the 3rd boat is waiting to pull into either dock, to load or unload, so its a pretty quick process if you can get the right CM's running the operation.

Did someone say 3 boats at once?

Well they probably weren't ACTUALLY using all 3 for passenger transport.. I thought it was neat :)

Actually, yes, they can and do use all three of the Ferries during peak times. (Typically park exits). One ferry will be loading at the MK, the other unloading at the TTC, and the third will be waiting for the MK dock to be free.

I meant at the time I took the picture. Maybe they were preparing, but all were heading across the lake at the same time, and the trailing boat was empty :)

Again I'm surprised at how people seem so "inconvenienced" by having to wait for anything while on vacation. My Wife and I love the fact that Disney provides all the "free" transportation" that they do. We figure, what the heck, we're on vacation!!! We park our car for a week. We're even contemplating flying in for our next trip to avoid all the drive time. (22 hours) from Austin.

I realize that busses may not be "magical" in the Disney sense, but would you rather have to drive and park each day? And heaven forbid, have to wait in line for the monorail, only to have to wait in traffic once you finally make it to your car parked in Pluto?

Oh the Humanity!!!

Actually, I'd rather stay at a Monorail or Boat resort and just take that to my hotel. But if I had to choose between a bus or a car, I'm pick the car any day.

Actually, I usually end up driving my car. It is much, much easier than waiting forever for the right bus to come. Especially when you are not going to be spending the entire day in only one or two parks.

Parking is a breeze at Disney - I mean you just pull into a spot - never any hunting for a place, and they are pull through spots - no parallel parking! Only problem is finding your car at teh end of the day. And I think they could easilly fix that if they would sacrafice a few parking spaces to some kind of something you could use as a landmark.

I've been keeping my eye on Taxi 2000 ( now Skyweb Express ) and they seem to be hanging tough while other PRT's come and go.

On paper, the system looks great, but untill it is implemented on a reasonably large scale, we'll never know how it will actually work. I'd love to see Disney take the plunge and become a leader in the area of cutting edge transportation again.
