Imagineers and Social Media

I am not referring in any way to the quality of an idea on a fan site. Disney hires their people for their ability to come up with ideas not take them off a fan site. Their hiring comes from their ability to do the work themselves.
Consultants are used all across industries, but again for their expertise , not to search a fan site for ideas and solutions.
Let's not act like Disney has a clue what they're doing. They just lost $100M+ on a movie everyone outside knew would be a flop before it was released. They probably should look at fan sites more, frankly.

Don’t kid yourself…they KNEW it was going to be a flop, they were
A) in too deep and committed to the project

B) their ego’s wouldn’t allow them to admit their mistake…oh my, perish the thought…

Isn't this how we got Tiana's Bayou Adventure? Everyone was demanding they do it and then they announced it?

I know, I know, "it was in the works for a year"... or so Disney claims.

True on both, but you have to pull out if you KNOW it's going to lose $100M. What a travesty. You're right though...what could they do at the point of being pot committed. I would at least fire everyone involved.

I’ve noticed a few Imagineers getting a ton of traction after posting behind-the-scenes stuff, and fans eat it up. It probably doesn’t hurt that some of them gain free tiktok followers just by being associated with Disney. It’s kind of wild how quickly a personal brand can grow when you're tied to something people are so passionate about. Makes you wonder how much of it is organic vs strategy.

I like when Imagineers post little behind-the-scenes stuff, but sometimes it feels like they're trying too hard to build hype before there's anything real to show or talk about.

It's in their best interest to drive the hype as early as possible and talk things up continually as the build progresses which in turn will interest the potential guest to book trips. The more trips booked for guests wanting to ride the newest attraction, the more $$$ that comes in and guarantees employment.

Posting without the approval of the company is a way to find oneself unemployed and potentially blacklisted.

I can't help but wonder how much the Imagineers and/or the higher-ups are looking at peoples' armchair imagineering ideas. Like, EVERYONE was suggesting an Electric Mayhem retheme of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster before they announced it (although the idea never got as much publicity as the Princess and the Frog retheme of Splash Mountain). Since the retheme was clearly only announced to "satisfy" folks who were upset that they were closing MuppetVision 3D, it does feel a bit suspicious.

And I distinctively remember seeing one or two people online suggest turning Dinoland into a South America land, with an Encanto attraction, before Disney announced THAT.

Something tells me that the Box Trucks as Space Transports idea was all WDI.

I can't possibly see how even the most irrational and inexperienced armchair imagineer, even if they were tripping on acid, could have had that one on their BINGO card.

What's even more fascinating to me, is how do Imagineers share their ideas within Imagineering? Is that allowed, culturally speaking? Is that stepping on toes? For example, if you're an Imagineer over working on Villains land for Magic Kingdom and you wake up with an amazing idea for Monstropolis or what could happen to Disneyland's Tomorrowland...what do you do? Nothing? Or is there an intranet on which to post ideas or monthly "open mic" for ideas? And are there some Imagineers who have so many ideas...they are considered obnoxious? That's what I'd like someone to ask an Imagineer if interviewing them!

Technically, the NDAs mean that Imagineers working on one project are not suppose to discuss it with even other Imagineers not on the project.

Yep - they’re not even allowed to talk about it with their spouse or significant other at home.

That’s pretty standard in industries where a single leak could cause millions (or even billions) in damage. To this day, I still get a thrill when one of my former employers announces a new product, service, or attraction. That’s when I finally get to turn to my wife and say, "That’s what I was working on."
