Imagineering for Halloween 2007

Quick question. When do you guys usually have T-o-T in your neighborhood? We usually have it the last Sunday of October. That always ends up being the day that we fall back an hour, so it gets dark sooner. We usually have it from 4 to 7, so it gets kind of dark by 5, but really dark by 6.

My concern this year is that with the new time change we're having, it will still be very bright out for T-o-T this Halloween if our village doesn't have it go from 5 to 8, which they probably won't.

This will affect all of T-o-T, since now I guess we don't "fall back" and hour until about mid-November.

Kind of bad news for Halloween decorators.

This all depends on where you live. I live in the north on the very west end of the Eastern Time Zone. (Confused enough? )

For example: It's lighter here at 8PM than it is in NYC.

Update 2 - 79 Days till Halloween 2007

This is a shorter update, as we are having computer issues.

So... like I said, I'm doing an attic scene in my garage loosely based off of the Haunted Mansion.
This next project I was working on was more of just a little detail.
It will be a hanging picture/image/drawing (whatever you would call it) of a sign based off of the Tomb Sweet Tomb sign in the HM.

So basically, I went to a local Hobby Store and got a blank canvas and some pastels.
Here's a picture of the pastels and the picture I got off the internet that I based my own picture on.
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Tomb_Sweet_Tomb_pic_1.jpg

And here's how far I've come so far. (Well actually I've finished this project, but can't get the rest of the pics up as of now. I should be able to in a few days)
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Tomb_Sweet_Tomb_pic_2.jpg

I think it looks pretty good for me because I'm pretty bad at drawing.

Um... for anyone wanting to try any of these projects, I wouldn't recommend using pastels on the kind of canvas I did. It was too rough of a servace(probably meant for watercolors) and whenever you touch the colored on part, the color comes right off.

Oh well. But for how much the pastels were, this is a keeper!! I'll just have to be extra careful with this prop!
Another update on the near horizon. (I've only just begun to reveal some of my stuff.:animwink: )

^ I'd really like to hear your about your plans/progress. It's neat that your expanding over to two properties. That's got to be a lot of decorations!!
We started out small, a few bought and created decorations. And it increased year to year. Our main idea is the haunted trail. We use a Purple rope light and they follow it through the side yard with various "scenes". Nothing too scary. We grow pumpkins and have so many that we have a pumpkin booth and many are carved and light.
We have an electric chair that we built and the "electrical cap" blinks on and off. There is a coffin that was bought at an auction. It was built in the early 1900s and because its been stored in various dingy areas so that it is very weathered.
And of course, there are Disney touches all over the place.

Sounds fun! I also don't try to make it overly scary. Infact, I stray away from and don't use any of that "blood and guts" stuff that a lot of stores sell.

The wife and I added a few items to our arsenal this weekend.

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=373510

With all that we have added this year I do not think we will have any choice but to expand into the back yard. My house is at the end of a culdesac so the lot is pie shaped which does not leave a bunch of room in the front. Looks like the haunted trail around the house will become a reality this year.

Update 3 - 78 Days till Halloween 2007

I got the rest of the pictures on from my Tomb Sweet Tomb project.

So after I finished coloring it, I put a piece of twine on it to act as the string so I can hang it on the wall. I used 5 min. Epoxy which works VERY well.
I just used two toothpicks to stir and put the twine on.
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Tomb_Sweet_Tomb_pic_3.jpg

After it sat for about 5 to 10 minutes it was dry.
My cat tested to see how strong it was.
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/medium/Tomb_Sweet_Tomb_pic_4.jpg

And finally, the finished product! I just hung it on an open part of one of our walls in our house. It will be going on a blank white wall for Halloween. I just wanted to see what it would look like in our house. It's a nice indoor decoration too!
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Tomb_Sweet_Tomb_pic_5.jpg

That's it for now.

Master... Those look neat!! I never thought to check Sam's Club for any decorations.

Really the only thing I'm waiting for right now is a tombstone to add to my graveyard scene. I've started to just add one every year.(The only other scene besides my new attic scene for this year, but it will be on our front lawn)

We have decided to move our party to another location this year because we have outgrown the room we had. I have a 1 bedroom apartment and with over 30 guests last year it was pretty tight. So now we are utilizing a friends finished basement. It's very large and there are no windows. My only problem is that I am also decorating and doing lighting and special effects for another event the following night. It's a HUGE theater but the decor will be focused on making it look old rather than spooky. I believe I can recreate spooky with lots of portraits, webs, haze (to look like dust) and special lighting.

Does anyone have experience in using the web spinners? These are the cobwebs made from compressed air and a glue gun. I've seen many on the market but want to hear from people that have used them.

Glue gun?! That sounds cool.
I've always been interested in cobweb spinners too. Anyone used one before? I, too, want to know if they work well.

Looking around online, I found cobweb in a can.
It's on the cheaper side, but not sure how well it would work.

Probably this year, I'll just stick to the 99 cent bags of strechable cobwebs. If you pull on them enough, they are actually quite effective. :)

This is a really good thread. Makes me want to do something in our yard this year.

Too bad halloween isn't big in my neighborhood, last year we got maybe 14 people at our house. But at my godparents' house in the next town (2 mins away) they got 220+. Maybe we should do something at his house?

Anyway Good luck with this year's plans.

We're nearing the two month point. That's still plenty of time to accomplish some stuff.

No one has posted on here for a bit, so I thought I would stir this thread up again. I'm working on basically 3 to 4 projects (main points of attention in my attic scene). Don't have pictures yet. Should be updates soon.

Anyways, I thought I would throw out some good Halloween links.
This one is neat. Over 799 Halloween Projects & how to do them. Most have pictures, and even a few have video...
http://www.halloweenmonsterlist.info/

And finally a store I buy a few things from... (Well, actually all I bought from them this year was another tombstone [I add one every year to my collection for my graveyard scene, which is the only other scene I am doing this year for Halloween]). But just a word of warning, if you buy from them, it usually takes a long time for thier items to arrive to your house.:dazzle:

So there's a few Halloween websites. If you know of any good ones, please share!

I thought I would throw out one last one.
This one is fun!
I had this last Halloween, then got rid of the link. Yesterday, I remembered it, and took 20min trying to find it using Google. So I found it!
It's some short Halloween stories/games using Flash Animation.

http://darkartsmedia.com/DevilsTrampingGround.com.html

My favorite ones are The Tramping Ground, The Maco Lights, The Banshee, The FeeJee Mermaid, and The Ghost Trick.

Oh man!! Only 56 Days left. I've got to get rollin'!:p

But really, I do have a lot of work to still get done. No pictures here, but I'll tell ya that I will get some up probably between the 8th and the 16th.

I'm basically working on three projects to go into my attic scene.
1) An old music box that will open/close & play a music box version of GGG.
2) A projector image of an orb that will fly by, and possibly (If I can get the lighting right) the "soon to be husband" that killed the "soon to be bride". I called her Elizabeth.:D
And possibly the hardest... 3) We're using some cams to get the planchette to move via fishing line on a glow in the dark ouija board.
For that, we measured everything out, now we just have to make it. Hopefully, when it's done, it will work properly.

Again, you'll be able to see all this in action when I tape it on Halloween. Then you will probably have to wait a week or two until I get it on the computer.

EVERYONE...
Feel free to post ideas, pics, videos for your Halloween celebrations this year. Weither you go all out, throw a huge party, or just carve pumpkins with your family. We want to see some Halloween fun spreading around!!

Update 4 (Part 1) - 46 Days till Halloween 2007

Back with another picture loaded update.:)

Well, this is my little "show scene" table. It is planned to be the closest thing to the guests as they are looking into my "attic scene" in my garage.
Basically all it is is a small table with props that help portray my story line a bit. (It's kind of weak, but as I keep adding to this scene in upcomming years, it will grow.)
Basically the story goes that Elizabeth's soon to be husband became extremely mad for some unknown reason and killed her. Her (a good spirit) and her soon to be husband (evil spirit) still lurk about the scene and house.

First off, we got this Decorator table from our local Walmart. Only $5. Can you say bargain?!:D
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Table_Box.jpg

And here it is set up. It is fairly sturdy.
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Table_pic_1.jpg

So I dressed it with a two piece.:lookaroun Gold (old looking) tablecloth.
You'll see that in the pics. The first prop I put on the table was a dozen *fake* black roses in a *real* glass vase. I'll probably fill it with water and add food coloring to make it look dirty. The only real rose I use is on one of our tombstones. Anyways, they are dew covered. And there are only 11 left. (One broke).
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Roses.jpg

After that, the main centerpiece. A picture in an old looking frame of Elizabeth. I gave her that name by the way. It's a morphing pic, and you'll see it's morphed side in a different pic, but I got this from hauntedportraits.com. I would highly recommend getting stuff from there. Very good quality. They even have some Haunted Mansion inspired portraits. (Ghost ship, Tomb Sweet Tomb sign, Master Gracey changing portrait...)
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Elizabeth_Normal.jpg

Also on the table... is a note. Written by Elizabeth before she parished. Now it's kind of hard to read, but it just adds depth to my scene and story, so hopefully people will have fun trying to figure out what it says.
There is also a fake tea light candle that flickers & glows, and a costume ring. ($5) It looks extremely real. It was to be the ring Elizabeth would have worn at her wedding. Here's some pics...
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/medium/Complete_Table_pic_1.jpg

This one has dead Elizabeth in it. And maybe you can spot my burnt hidden mickey.:D
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Complete_Table_pic_2.jpg

I'm spliting this update up right here since we are getting lengthy. 2nd part, should just be 1 post down.

Update 4 (Part 2) - 46 Days till Halloween 2007

Ok. Here's the rest of the update...

Now I have to light this prop somehow... (since it won't be in the blue lighting I'm putting up in the middle part of the attic)
So we're using LED technology. Fancy ehh?

We have a little Halloween-town (Kind of like Christmas towns, you know, miniatures). Anyways, we bought these to light up that, but the work perfectly for this too. LED's are really great. In comming years, I plan to use more.:sohappy:
So here they are.
http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/Blacklight_Spotlights.jpg

Kind of like mini spot lights that run on batteries. I'll end up hiding the cords better.

So here is what the final thing should turn out to be like.
With Camera Flash... http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/medium/Final_with_Flash.jpg
Without Camera Flash... http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/data/500/medium/Final_without_Flash.jpg

It looks much better in person. For the spotlights, I have one aimed on the picture and one aimed on the ring (that one also hits the note).

Of coarse, there will be some cobwebs on the table. And that's it for now. Expect more updates to be on their way in about a week.
If you decorate for halloween... Big or small, post your Halloween Fun on here! Even if you just do the tradition of carving pumpkins. We'd like to see em!:)

We were just working on our little music box rig. We realized that we ordered a wrong part . So we'll have to reorder a part and continue working on this project next week. This week, we'll also be getting all of our supplies for our Ouija Board project. I have the box it will be in. Anyways, work's coming along good. Only about a month and a few days left!!

Ok. I'm probably done with the picture updates. I've been busy with school lately, so you'll see everything in action in a video I shoot of it once it's fully set up and done.:D
