Look, I like Jimmy Fallon just fine, but I also think that this is a mistake for several reasons:
  • The Tonight show, even though it started in New York many years ago, has now become an L.A. tradition and tourist attraction in its own right over its 40 or more years there.
  • L.A. is where the most movie stars live, which is why it moved out there in the first place.
  • Not everything NBC does needs to at 30 Rockefeller Center with SNL alumni. Not only will it be harder to very the guests among Tonight and Late Night with Seth Myers and not to mention The Late Show with David Letterman and Today, but they will all be pulling from the same pool (celebrities coming to New York); whereas with Tonight based in L.A., it made a perfect complement to the others, especially on NBC. Now it will be one long New York SNL-influenced day at NBC.
  • The current Tonight show is still No. 1.
Anyhow, I like Jimmy Fallon, but I think (1) he can still wait, and (2) Tonight should be in L.A.

True, but it was always easier for Leno and Carson to get good acts for filler, since they all lived nearby.

I remember when Johnny Carson used to have the Hollywood greats who weren't always promoting something new (Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, John Wayne, Bette Midler, Robin Williams, etc.). Now Leno hasn't done that as much with current big stars, it seems; but he does seem to have a few go-to local guests that do not have something to promote. But your point is well taken. It's just easier for the filler to be good, and to coax the big stars to come out, it seems, in L.A.

Does anyone knows if the player can refuse to go to WDW for personal reasons? I wonder if a player ever was approached and decided nah, I rather go home.

Johnny wasn't afraid to have guest hosts. In fact, Leno was one of his guest hosts. I liked it better when there were guest hosts for variety, rather than the current policy (which started with Leno's promotion) of no guest hosts (reruns instead).
