Just as an update to the previous topic, the official refurb list online has listed Fantasmic! as being down for all of September (after labor day). Just an FYI for those who were curious.

Hey guys, only a week away and I'll be in sunny San Diego!!! :sohappy:

My friend I'll be visiting in LA just emailed me and said that a local grocery store is selling 3 day park hoppers for $99 + tax. Have any of you locals seen this type of promotion before? I just wanted to make sure it was legit before I spent my money. I also wasn't sure if you had to be a California resident to get them or not but if so I was gonna paypal my friend the money so he could pick them up for me.

Thanks for any info!

Yupper, I've seen those everywhere. They're for SoCal residents only.

Do they make you show an ID at the park gates? I know at WDW they don't. It knows its sorta cheating the system but these days I gotta get the most outta my $$, esp. on this trip.

Hey all, just wanted to pop in and say that I've made it to San Deigo, CA. It wasn't a bad trip out here now I just gotta get adjusted to the time change. I haven't seen much of the city yet but my conference starts today so hopefully that will change! I'm sure I'll have a blast here this week but I can't wait to make it up to Disneyland next Monday! :sohappy:

Have a great time, I'll look forward to your report.

Are you in San Diego proper or further north in the La Jolla/Del Mar area?
If not, do try to make some evening trips up there after the conference is done for the day. Find a Karl Strauss Brewery/restaurant!

Brewerys

There is a Karl Strauss in Carlsbad that's MUCH closer to San Diego than DCA's cart. ;) There might be others too though.

There's also a Stone Ale brewery in Escondido. I HIGHLY recommend that one! It's really facinating what they do!

One more thing to check out in the area- The Wild Animal Park in Escondido does "The park at dark" all through this month! DEFINATELY worth checking out! The lions in particular LOVE our So Cal nights!

Thanks for the info LadyDarling, unfortunately I haven't had much extra time to leave the downtown San Diego area. Hopefully I'll be back for the conference next year so I can try to plan for some of your suggestions. I did manage to make it out to hotel del Coronado for a bit today and it was beautiful. I hung out on the beach some but didn't wander into the water bc it was kinda cold. Is it normal to not have warmer water in Augsut? When I lived in FL the water was really warm in August but I'm sure its all different out there.

This is warm water this time of year. No one is in the surf in wetsuits, are they? That means it must be summer and the water is 67 to 71 degrees and is deemed "warm" by West Coasters. I went swimming in Laguna Beach a week ago and it was delightful.

FYI, the ocean currents in both the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans rotate clockwise. That means the warm water flows up the east coasts of North America and Asia, and the cool water flows down the west coasts of North America and Europe. Warm ocean water in China and Virginia, cool ocean water in Oregon and France.

Isn't the Coronado beautiful? I try to go there every time I make it to SD. It's getting a bit run down, and the surrounding area is getting to be more of a bedroom community for the wealthy than it used to be. It used to be strictly vacation homes.

Still, I love it there!

If you're leaving out of San Deigo, another fun place to check out is Seaport Village! Then again, there is SO MUCH to do in San Deigo alone!

Have fun in Disneyland tomorrow!:)

Hey guys, sorry I've taken so long to get on here but works been crazy; gotta love all the stuff that gets messed up when you are gone for two weeks!!

I just wanna say first off I had an amazing time in California and at Disneyland! Hopefully I'll get to go back to the conference every so many years.

I took a TON of pics so I won't post them here directly, I'll just put the link up for my Kodak gallery site.

San Diego was a great city and I'd love to go back to see more of it. I did get to visit the Seaport village area one day and it was great, I just love being near the water.

My two days in LA were alright, I think if I had more time it would have been better but I wanted to be able to spend more time in Disneyland! I was suprisingly underwhelmed by LA. I guess its bc TV and movies give us this false image of a glamorous city but really its just another city with a lot of weird people! Probably didn't help that the first place my friends took me to was Venice Beach. It was nice being at the beach but there was so many people and distractions, I'm one for a nice quiet unspoiled beach where there aren't many people around. We also went to the Santa Monica pier that night to watch the sunset which was beautiful!

The next day we headed up to Hollywood and Vine to check out the stars and theaters. Again, I wasn't expecting it to be so 'unglamorous". There were sooooo many people and people dressed up in some good and some not so good costumes. My friends warned me to steer clear of them bc they'll let you take your picture with them then want money! So the pics I did get of them were from afar. After that we headed up to the Hollywood sign. I think I liked being up there best just because it was away from the city! :)

Now onto Disneyland. I had a great time and wish I was still there!! It was really odd though having it all in the middle of everything, but once you were inside the gates you kinda forgot about all the outside stuff. Walking through the tunnels and onto main street it was kinda like dejavu, everything was oddly familiar but different! :) The castle was beautiful but for me it doesn't compare to Cinderella's castle. The first thing we hit that morning was space mountain and I just gotta say WOW!!! Their SM totally kicks WDW's butt! It was so smooth and so dark and I loved the addition of music!!! Needless to say I made sure to ride it multiple times during my three days.

Next we ran over to the Nemo Subs. We waited probably around 40 minutes. I loved being able to get on the subs again since my last time was at WDW when I was 6. They did an awesome job with the ride.

Hmm let's see what other highlights, oh Pirates was great, definitely a step above WDW's version. I also had lunch at the Blue Bayou another day. The atmosphere was amazing and so was the monte cristo!!!

The fireworks at Disneyland were amazing and the way tinker bell flies was just awesome!!! I would love to see something like that at Disney World.

The next day I went to California Adventure. I know a lot of people don’t like this park bc it doesn’t seem up to Disney standards but I still thought it was a great park. There are things they could do to improve it and I’d love to go back after all the renovations are done.

I think the best thing about DCA was the Aladdin stage show. It was like a mini broadway show and if I had time I would have seen it again. I liked their version of Tower of Terror too. It totally caught me off guard bc I was thinking it was exactly like Florida’s so when the drops came I was definitely surprised!!! J

I know its probably tacky to some people but I actually liked the paradise pier section of the park, especially at night. California screamin was a great coaster and I LOVED the new Toy Story Mania ride! Thanks to the single rider option I was able to ride these two a number of times. I’ve been told by friends that TSM in Florida doesn’t offer this which stinks!

The Sun wheel was an unexpected thrill ride!! We chose one of the swinging gondolas bc they looked fun. I’m not afraid of heights but man when that thing really got swinging I was screaming and holding on to the cage!! Definitely gave my friends something to poke fun of me for the rest of the day.

I had dinner at the Wine County restaurant. I had the alfredo lasagna and it was great. At the beginning of my dinner I was able to catch the Pixar parade since I was sitting outside. I had a great seat and really enjoyed it.

I had a great three days at Disneyland and I hope that I get to go back someday. Even though I loved it I still love Disney World the best since it was my home away from home for the three years I lived in Florida.

Here’s the link to my Disneyland pics…enjoy!!! Also thanks to all of you who gave me tons of helpful tips for my trip!!!

Great pictures! Glad you enjoyed your trip. It looks like you went at a great time of year, weekdays in August, when the SoCal weather is gorgeous and the crowds are manageable.

I take it you enjoyed yourself in Southern California?

And yes, Los Angeles is far over-rated. It's really quite trashy for the most part, with a few exceptions and little gems that many tourists don't even know about. I strongly recommend tourists limit their time in Los Angeles County, and instead focus on the un-ending coastal charms and natural beauty of Orange County and San Diego County.

Unless you are Aaron Spelling and you frame the picture just right with fake lighting, Los Angeles is really just a big, dirty, expensive city. Orange County and San Diego are where the true SoCal lives and plays.
