A Google Image Search for "Hip Mickey" yields:

A gross exaggeration of course, but can you imagine the uproar if Disney debuted this? :lookaroun

I'll do you one better:

Keep in mind that these guys have already been released and are (or were) for sale. This isn't the first time the idea of a mickey make-over has been mentioned and I'm sure it wont be the last.

Ah yes, coming soon: "Pimp Mickey" with his friends gangsta Goofy, Duggie Donald, and $ex slave Minnie. Toon Town will be renamed "Toon Hood" which is a cartooney ghetto. Join Mickey as he and his friends rule the drug and prostitute industry.:brick:

Seriously though, if they want to make Mickey hip, they need to do it the right way. They should have Mickey star in an Animaniacs-type show that appeals to kids and adults.

The Goofy cartoon that played before National Treasure 2 was a step in the right direction. It was absolutly hilarious ( one of the best cartoons I've seen in a while really ), and was retro with humor that was perfect for modern audiences.

Mickey Mouse Revue II?I wouldn't mind.

And Philhar is only named after Mickey. It's really Donald's show.

Mickey is a company mascot. That's about it. He is easily recognizable even to today's youth. I don't see what they need to do to "update" this.

Its funny that the company feels Mickey is getting out of touch with todays youth when it seems that they only connection most kids today have with the character is in their modern upates of him in shows like House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Maybe if they showed the old cartoons on tv once in a while instead of, as was said before, only on expensive DVD sets?

I really don't think this is something to get too concerned over.

I remember where this came from. It was from the same interview where Iger says he didn't think Ratatouille could be a franchise (and this was probably over looked because more people were talking about how there wouldn't be a Ratatouille ride).

The NY Times is kind of taking it out of context and putting it in this type of article.

This came from a question asking Iger about classic Mickey (which I think might have refered to more of the older style and look of Mickey) and I think Iger means that he needs to evolve with the times and find new ways of going about things. I don't think it is anything to be worried over.

*dies again*

When did THAT come out?!?

If you don't like that, you would probably die after seeing the special line of clothing in the NYC World of Disney store.

women who just scream when the monster shows up instead of taking charge and punching him out, etc.

You have obviously never seen "It! Conquered the World" in which Beverly Garland's character shows no restraint in taking a shotgun and running after the carrot shaped monster.

Anyway, I'm getting real sick and tired of reading Iger's "relevant" press releases. I suppose he wants to replace that trolley with a video screen because kids today are incapable of learning anything about the past. As for Mickey, Mickey's Mouse Works (House of Mouse wasn't as good because of all the recycled cartoons and obscure Disney references, now that's something that kids probably can't relate too, but once again that's another problem with Disney) did a great job of bringing back that classic style to today's audiences (with all the older Disney characters including Von Drake), but Disney had to go and cancel it because of low ratings apparently. Go figure.

I wish people would stop underestimating kids these days- they don't need Mickey to be "hip," they don't need CGI, they don't need to have history "dumbed down" so they can understand it, and they certainly don't need all this PC crap (but that's another argument on its own- I could rant for days about that!).

I'm 21, so I'm a little older than the kids who are being talked about, but I sometimes find myself in the same boat. I never watched cartoons when I was a kid. I went to school, then straight to my dance rehearsals, then home to bed. every day. I grew up going to Disneyland numerous times a year, so I loved Disney, I loved all of the characters, but I didn't know the Fab 5 from anything but the parks. I definitely saw the classic movies- Cinderella, B&B, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. so I knew those characters, but Mickey was simply a park mascot to me. A couple of years ago when I started working for WDW I decided that I needed to do my "research" and watch the old Disney cartoons with Mickey and the rest of the Fab 5- I can't tell you how in love with them I was! I would sit on youtube for hours watching them, and literally laughing out loud. So I guess my point is that if those cartoons were shown on TV, even just every once in a while on the Disney channel, I have no doubt that kids would love them!!

People need to stop catering to our technology addicted kids and let them see something more broad- we're doing them a major disservice and completely sheltering them by only providing them with what they're used to.
