Good' Disney needs to downsize so it can return its financial focus to the Disney Studios and Parks and Resorts.

Interesting, though when they say get rid of ABC, just how much are they talking about since they have a lot of stuff tied into ABC

CNBC is reporting ABC is being put up for sale? Sounds like a slow news day for someone there..

The intersting thing is that Iger started off at ABC. I don't think he would be willing to let his old stomping grounds go to another company.

It appears, this probably isn't going to happen but if it did, it would be good news for fans of the studio and the parks. Any move that gets Disney back to basics (movies and theme parks) would be a good move.

Then why have espn or anything besides Disney studios and the parks. They need the other media outlets to cross promote there brands. In today's world they need ABC and espn to promote the parks and there core business. If worked properly the synergies are worth a fortune to the brands.

Did any one see the insider trading scandel today and the arrest made by the FBI. This will explain the whole Disney to sale ABC which is totaly false.

Comcast is going to be in a very good deal before years end. Not to mention the plan to own all of NBC Universal with in seven years including the theme parks. You can say what you want about Comcast but Brian Roberts is a visionary and knows how to make money. None of his deals has ever gone south when the final purchase was made and finalized.

if this would turns out to be true who do you think might buy it
comcast and who else?

i think it all stems from this

There would have to be a clear distinction that this is ABC ONLY. Disney cannot afford to sell ESPN or its many other TV options for synergy reasons.

Disney has been involved with television since Walt's time. While I like the idea of focusing the company and cutting unnecessary acquisitions from the Eisner era, I don't think ABC should be one of them. Its a major network and it provides great advertising for both Disney movies and theme parks.

we all know that disney owns espn and abc, but how do they cross promotions? I dont see a load of disney commercials on these two networks. The only thing these two networks do is provide revenue.

I do a lot. I watch both networks a lot. The biggest thing they do on both networks is advertise for their movies. I notice it ALL THE TIME. I t seems like the only movie previews i see on those two channels are disney movies and they show them a lot. Of course then there is the ABC-ESPN cross promotion. On ESPN they show a lot of ABC ads and they throw in little things in their shows talking about them. Like at the beginning of sports center the other day they did a whole big thing b/c it was the lost premier that night. On ESPN, they have ESPN on ABC NBA basketball. There is also the Christmas day parade on ABC where ABC basically turns into the Disney channel. All the ads are for disney things during that period.

You really have to know the ins and outs of what is what to catch the cross promotion and all of these things, but it is definitely there. The most obvious promotion i've seen was probably last year when ESPN (I assume) struggling a bit to get sponsers as we were right in the middle of the recession and they would say for a few months straight on Sports Center when they came back from or going into a brake "brought to you by Disney Parks". They do sprinkle in a few commercials here and there, but for the most part it is what I listed above.

This story was mentioned a few weeks ago in the Wall Street Journal. It's been bubbling along for awhile now.

I think it's a good move. Network TV is dying a slow death, and it's role in American life will only get smaller as the 21st century unfolds. The cable networks like ESPN are still solid, but the ABC network has already seen its best and brightest days long ago.

I, for one, won't miss Susan Lucci being rolled out at a cornball Super Soap Weekend in a theme park somewhere. ABC TV is going the way of the dodo bird, and Bob Iger would be wise to dump it now while he can still get a decent price.

If Disney still needs a presence on Network TV (commercials or cross-promotion) they can still buy some strategically chosen airtime when they need or want it. They are still paying for all those theme park and movie commercials that run on ABC now anyway, it's not done for free.
