Iger announces plans for Zootopia 2, Frozen 3, and Toy Story 5

Movies that camer similar time did much better in theatrical box office as Encanto. So I don't think pandemic turnout applies much to that one's theatrical run.
Maybe or maybe not… I said most not all… as I think there are chances one would not succeed… although I think Encanto would be one that would have….Disney announced before it arrived in theaters that it would debut on Disney plus by Christmas… Covid cases were increasing rapidly at the time…Families opted not to go at that time… I personally know people who waited for just that reason and would of gone in the before times

Iger announced in yesterday’s earnings call that the company will be making Zootopia 2, Frozen 3, and Toy Story 5. If this comes to pass, what are your thoughts?

Personally, I loved Zootopia, so I would be excited for a sequel. I felt like Frozen 2 was a narrative mess, and that they didn’t have a story to tell, so I’d be interested in where they could take this overall story. With Elsa abdicating her throne, I’m not quite sure what they would do with that story. Even Anna and Kristoff didn’t have much to do in that one. Definitely not sure how I feel about TS5 as the first three movies were incredible and told a perfect trilogy and TS4 was unnecessary. Now if they want to retcon TS4 and make Woody realize he never should have left, then I am listening.

What are your thoughts? Should DIS continue to tell stories of these beloved characters or is this just an unnecessary cash grab? Or something different altogether?

I am glad Iger shifted the decision-making power back to the creative folks.....

Not that TWDC is run in the spirit of Walt anymore but -

Frozen III could work if the focus is on Elsa. I feel like there really isn't much more they could do with Anna, Kristoff or Olaf. I'd like to see Elsa face off against a villain. Maybe a villain with fire powers?
Because we're getting Frozen III anyway (I'd rather we weren't), I'd like to see the film acknowledge Elsa as the villain the original film concept probably intended. Frozen II kind of erased any hint of this, though.

It's a shame because Strange World is the only recent original Disney movie I thought had severe flaws. Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto — all original stories — were pretty good movies that were unfortunate victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
My gut feeling is that all of the above would have at least turned a profit (except Strange World), although none but Encanto would have been actual box office hits.

I actually think Raya would have been a box office hit if COVID never happened. I actually saw it in a theater and the visuals were much more dazzling on the big screen. Of all of the recent Disney movies, it was the most epic in scope. Raya also suffered from a lack of marketing since all of its trailers came out in late 2020 — when NO ONE was going to the theater. Had COVID never happened, we would have likely seen trailers for it before movies like Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Soul, etc.

Have you heard of "Wish"?

And Elemental. I too lament Disney doing a lot of sequels, but it's hard to ignore that they've been putting out a bunch of animated films that are originals recently. It's okay if there is a good balance between new and established and I think that's the case with the animated side of things. (Live action is a different story)

Singg 2 seemed to have no issue three weeks later. Covid Cases were the same then. Ghostbusters Afterlife and other releases did fine as well.

There is a difference most of Disney fan base have Disney plus and knew that Encanto was going to be on the service by Christmas where as Sing 2… no one knew when or where they would be able to watch at no extra charge.

These days I love the theater going experience and think it is a cheaper form of entertainment for my wife and I… I would imagine it can be a costly endeavor for families and when given the choice they opted for the one that is not announced coming to a streaming service

Sure Ghostbusters was a family movie…I believe it was a different demo…I do not personally know any families that went and saw it… It was all people like me who grew up in the 80’s and were fans of the franchise

I'm remembering back to my teenage years when I worked at a multiplex movie theater, and on two consecutive summers, saw how two different Disney movies performed. Summer of 1994, The Lion King did massive business. We had it playing in two auditoriums for weeks, and for about the first month, it sold out almost every performance, even the late night shows. When I went on hiatus at the job for my high school football season at the end of the summer, it was still playing in one of the medium sized auditoriums. The film ended up making more than $700 million worldwide.

Next summer, it was Pocahontas, which lets be honest, is almost nobody's favorite Disney film. It did the kind of numbers you would expect for a Disney Renaissance era film. The auditorium was filled initially, but then faded pretty quickly. It ended up making barely half of what The Lion King pulled in. Good numbers, but not the Earth-conquering money The Lion King managed.

I look at Raya and Encanto the same way, with Raya being Pocahontas to Encanto's Lion King. Encanto had a funny but heartfelt and fast-paced plot with a killer soundtrack. Raya was... serviceable story and had no songs. It probably would have done fine with the benefit of a full COVID-free theatrical run, but I don't see it as the kind of film that could grow on word of mouth or be more than a one-and-done for most moviegoers. By midway through The Lion King's run, we had customers at the theater complaining that half the auditorium was singing along to the movie, which means that there were already enough repeat viewers and the soundtrack had penetrated the public's consciousness enough that people already knew the lyrics. That's what we probably would have seen with Encanto, especially once "We Don't Talk About Bruno" started to catch on.

Not surprised by this but disappointed Is this Iger’s big return. I’m creative look you loved these movies so watch them again!

Toy Story 5 - why the first three films were a nice series and had a good ending. Dragging out for more is just a cash grab

Frozen 3. Have to admit I didn’t like the first movie that much and haven’t watched the second. fairytales don’t need sequels they live happily ever after. Maybe they will go on vacation to agrabah and meet jasmine and aladdin for some added synergy!

Zootopia 2 - the first film was good and this could be OK with the right plot. I think it would work as a disney plus series better though.

I’m suprised we haven’t had any live action remakes announced yet

They've remade/have in the works all the older stuff haven't they (or at least gave it a stupid villain origin movie)? What's left that has the name recognition? All I can think of is MAYBE Aristocats.

The next step will be live action remakes of the CG animation from pixar and Disney feature. Once they've exhausted the path they're on, you wait a bit and then start on your popular things like the Incredibles, tangled... And don't forget about the sequels to the live action remakes. I'm sure we'll see more than just Aladdin and lion king.

Live action The Black Cauldron!!! Any of the Chronicles of Prydain would be amazing. However looking what was done to Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings, maybe they should leave well enough alone.

The Chronicles of Prydain could work as a Disney Plus series. Contrary to popular belief, The Black Cauldron wasn't bad because it was too dark. It was bad because it had poor world-building and thin characters. A TV show would give the time to rectify that problem.

I actually think the darker aspects of the Black Cauldron are its strengths. That scene where Hen Wen gets captured by the dragon is one of the most genuinely terrifying sequences in Disney's animated canon (I can only imagine the reactions of the pre-schoolers in the audience whose parents thought there were getting a typical Disney fairy tale). Unfortunately, the movie never pays off the emotional impact that this scene builds.

Or maybe an animated version of The Holiday, where Jasmine and Anna swap kingdoms ... and boyfriends!

I personally think the darkness of the Black Cauldron is overhyped. The Evil Queen from Snow White scared me way more than the Horned King when I was a child.

True. It's sad that Katzenberg messed it up in the editing room.

Disney should release the unedited version on Disney Plus. They wouldn't get complaints as they already have R-rated movies on the platform. Also, the movie is too obscure to generate any significant controversy.
