ID/Airport Worries

My trip is June 2nd. I just renewed my state ID May 13th and I'm worried it may not come in time. :lookaroun

They stapled my expired ID onto a temporary paper one. I'm hoping it comes before then but worst case, could I use the temporary one, along with the expired one, along with a college picture ID AND a social security card? (lol, whatever it takes!)

I'd have a heart attack at the airport if they won't let me fly

I've heard it takes two weeks, and I heard someone say they recieved theres in 5 days. I live in michigan if that helps.

Here in RI, when you renew your driver's licence, you get a crappy paper one temporarily and I've never had a problem using it at an airport. Have a great trip!

You can actually fly domestically without an ID -- some people with a Libertarian bent actually do so intentionally! Be prepared, however to go through an intensive screening by TSA. Some actually have gotten through TSA screning *faster* without IDs since they're singled out and don't have to wait in line with everybody else.

Here's a couple of links...

You can try to make an employee id. Very easy on your computer. My mom lost her wallet two days before flying a few years back. She just squared a picture of herself and included her name, department, and a fake employee number then laminated it and attached it to a retractable clip thing she got at Officemax. Seems like a lot work and may not seem that ethical, but she was not about to miss her vacation! She had no problems. I was worried about my daughter not having an id, so I took the concept and made her a school ID.

Hi there, I would certainly tell you to check with your air carrier's website. A friend of mine had the same problem last week, we looked up her carrier which was Continental, and it had a whole list of what is acceptable official ID's either individually or in conjunction with each other. Best of luck!! Belle

I am still shocked that when you renew you don't get your ID that very day! We do, any form, license, state ID, if it expires and you go in and renew you walk out with a new one. How many states don't so that? I always thought the BMV here in Indiana was bad but I guess not!

These days a lot of jurisdictions have elaborate anti-tampering and anti-copy measures built into their drivers' licenses. I know here in Ontario the process can't be done "on-the-spot".

We used to have simple laminated licenses/state IDs that were ready about 5-10 minutes after your picture was taken, but now we have nice sturdy plastic ones... At the DMV they give you a temporary paper one and you get your plastic one in the mail in about two weeks.

I miss my crappy old laminated license though.

NY has enhanced ID security so you don't get the new one right away. I need a new photo for mine, but I'm not renewing ahead of time.

An ID is not required to fly within the US.

However, when you go to the TSA checkpoint they'll mark your boarding pass as a selectee, which basically means that they're going to go through all of your carry on bags and physically pat you down. It's not a big deal really. However, I would highly recommend that you print your boarding passes from home if your airline offers it.

I have to say, the New York one took a little getting used to for me. I was used to the hard plastic ones. I have no idea what this is printed on exactly, but it's the first time I've been able to fold in half or twist my photo ID.
