I recently visited TDS and it was unreal. The level of detail is just at the level of being overwhelming. I will say, TDS really does not have too much "magic". It is a fantastic park and I had a lot of fun there, but it is aimed towards an older, more mature crowd, it isn't trying to tug at the heart strings and be all about wishing upon a dream come true. It's theme is inherently dirty, messy, real, old, and tries intensely to be realistic in a fantastical sort of way. The buildings in American Waterfront are in a state of despair and in their height of character, and there is no room in the cracks for idealized nostalgia. This is actually what I loved about it. I wish Main Street could be like this, DLP has this era and city theme in mind, but isn't as worn down, but it's close.
JTCE is a really great ride, but the real greatness is in the queue. The ride vehicles are really cramped, but richly decorated in a very cool way. I love the whole Jules Verne theme that they have created there. I still think that Mysterious Island could have been more, like maybe with a house or some sense of place, like a laboratory or something to walk in. The gift store there doesn't really fill this void in the story.
Anyways, the ride system is like Test Track, but the ride itself is slightly underwhelming. The worm at the end and the fireball effect are intense, and the speed and drop are cool, but the build up to the ride is SO great that you are ultimately left a little underwhelmed.
To me, the best ride in TDS is 20k under the sea. That is a terrific ride with a great illusion and use of lighting. it also has amazing special effects. I would rather see 20K than JTCE at WDW.
edit: just to add, in my opinion...TOT in WDW is the best ride in any Disney park. Hands down.
