I've seen 2 of those 3 (Les Miserables and POTO) ...But all in Chicago. Also many others, some big, some not so big. We're definitely not lacking in the cultural department over here! We may not get the same big names NY gets, but we get incredible talent just the same.

I'm not "pro-Phantom" as a political statement- I just love the music. It's beautiful.

Alicia, we're not going until June. Not sure yet who is taking over but I've heard a few runors. My friend saw it downtown (here, not there) not too long ago and said we'd love it. So we're excited to go :sohappy:

I totally admit being a theatre snob

I do think Phantom is a great show for the simple fact that it introduces a number of people to theatre. It's like the "La Boheme" of broadway. It's very accessible. It is very large (although the cast has been cut down and cut down and cut down). And it has lots of technical spectacle; although, 16 years later the special effects in live theatre are worlds beyond what Phantom introduced.

For those interested, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang opens on Bway next January! Also, Mary Poppins will be coming in a couple of years. Disney Theatrics is also working on a full 3 hour version of Tarzan for Broadway -- using a lot of the environmental effects from the Animal Kingdom show (however that's not supposed to be public knowledge yet, so if anyone asks, my name is Jose!"

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang starts previews in March of '05 and opens April of '05.

Phantom probably has 2 years left to its long run. Houses have been down and I think it will beat CATS record for the longest running show then. I've never seen it, but it's put a lot of people to work across the country for a long time.

Disney 2002, unfortunately I don't think Wicked will win the Tony for Best Musical. The winner will be either:

1) Ave. Q.
2) Caroline, or Change
3) Assasins (unless the commitee rules it's a revival)

Wicked actualy has a chance of not being nominated for Best Musical! Only 4 musicals can be picked and Boy from Oz or Taboo might get a nod. Wicked will get other noms, but might miss out on the Big one.

Darrell, sounds like you had a great time!

I am envious, I have benn THROUGH New York City a few times for business but was never able to actually see any of it.

You guys mentioning "Wicked" when I heard about the broadway production I became excited. The book was great!

I am hoping my sister, my wife and I can go see it sometime in the near future (my wife and my sister are both big fans of the book).

Is the musical as dark and comedic as the book is? Or is it more comedic with the dark tones underplayed?

I wonder when a movie will be made of it?

Thanks Lovecraft! I had a lot of fun, Wicked... Never saw it or read it, I just found out about it on this thread lol!.

Knowing your taste in music, I bet you would love the book.

It was a favorite among the more laid back of the gothic community in New Orleans for a while.

As for the "altercation" . . . sounds like a typical New York greeting to me. Your proper response would have been to kick him (Cartman voice) squaaaare in the nuts, but I'm sure they could tell you were from out of town, so they probably forgave you not knowing the local customs.

I know, I know, just a bit of artistic license, and perhaps I should have specified "New York City".

Anyway, Darrel, if you run into Tigsmom or Figmentmom, please don't greet them by kicking them in the nuts.

I mean all of the following ranting with a smile....

There's no way!

Avenue Q will not win because of the overly adult subject matter.

Taboo and Boy from Oz were slammed as awful shows.

And Assasins??? How could that NOT be a revival production?!

As for Caroline, or Change -- it is not a broadway show

... considering those oversights, I'm going to stick with my picks and trust my information and sources.

Disney 2002, you make some good points, but I've got a couple.

Hugh Jackman is the Host for the Tony telecast. If his show is not nominated, do they let him do a number from Boy from Oz? If he can do one, then all of the other musicals not nominated for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival will want to do a number.

Assasins has never been on Broadway, but was done Off Broadway at Playwirtes Horizons in'90. It's actually a cursed show. It was supposed to come to Broadway in '91, but was cancelled because of the first Gulf War. It was all set to go in October of '01, but was cancelled again after
Sept. 11. With the new rules put in place a couple of years ago, the Tony commitee has to decide if it's a new musical or not.

Avenue Q is one of those shows that the Broadway community loves.

I also forgot that Bombay Dreams is eligible for Best Musical. So, you have Wicked, Ave Q, Taboo, Boy from Oz, Caroline, Assasins(?), and Bombay Dreams competeing for 4 spots. One show is going to be left out in the cold.

I just heard that Caroline, or Change might not be coming in. The Crew and the shops building the show have been told to stop all work. Apparently, the star of the show has not signed her contract. If this show opens, it'll get a Best Musical nod because Tony Kushner wrote it and George wolfe is directing it. That's a lock for a nom.

I have another rumor to report. There could be an Actors strike in late June, early July.

Again, Caroline, or Change is not a broadway show, it's off-bway and therefore ineligible. Eligibility is limited to a select group of about 25 theatres.

Assassins, even if never on B'way before, is a limited engagement. 2 months only! Therefore, it may get 'special production' but nothing else.

Don't want to come across as totally contrary. I think Avenue Q is hysterical. I would give it the award if it were up to me. I just know that the Tony's are extremely political. There is a need to use them to ensure the future life of b'way. That being said, WICKED is extremely successful with the tourists and the natives... while Avenue Q really has only caught on with the NYC crowd. No families there... and we all know... family accessible shows make the money in the long run.

True, but Avenue Q is the critics' darling. I haven't seen it yet (I live four hours north of Manhattan), but I will.

Urinetown was also a critical smash with a similar course to b'way as Avenue Q. There is only so much that will be allowed for by the Tony voters, however.

It'll be interesting to see.

It will also be interesting to see what the eligibility committee decides at the second meeting in April about the various grey areas about which we have spoken.

Caroline, or Change opens at the Eugene O'neill Theatre (49th between Broadway and 8th) on May 2. That is the last day for Tony eligibilty. This can change if the star does not sign her contract.

Assassins, even if never on B'way before, is a limited engagement. 2 months only! Therefore, it may get 'special production' but nothing else.

I think the special engagement Tony is for concerts (Elain Stich or Jackie Mason's standup shows) or shows like Blast. Also, Assasins is currently a limited run because its producer is Roundabout Theatre Company. Roundabout is a non profit companywith a subscription ticket plan. The show is offered to the subscribers for a limited run, and then they extend the show and offer it to a mass sale.

When did Caroline get moved? TOTALLY missed that.

As for Assassins, that 2 month run at 54 is actually the extend run already. Roundabout announced that today. The Special Engagement Tony is so new anyways, who knows how they'll use it.
