I Might Be a Bad Teacher....

My students have been researching topics that have to do with the 2950's-1960's and one topic was Disneyland. Well today they were presenting and the girl gave a great presentation and I was so proud then she asked for questions. One question came up what is the difference between Disneyland and Disney World and she said there is no difference! And I guess I gasped because suddenly everyone was looking at me and one kid so Looks like Miss R is going to explode. And another asked Miss R what is the difference. So I quickly shared a few things but I didn't want to the original presenter to think she had done a bad job so we moved on quickly. But now I feel bad, they need to know so much about Disney and I lost that teachable moment.
Well just wanted to share the story. Thanks for reading!

60 days until I'm at Disney!!!!

Well that is kind of a funny story :)

But don't forget that you are teaching them. And I know that if I made a mistake I would want someone to tell me.

But don't think your a bad teacher because you where teaching. :)

Plan a day teaching the kids about how things in life that appear to be the same are not necessarily that way.

You can throw a healthy dose of Disney in there and masquerade it as a good learning example.

It always depends on the way you "corrected" the student. As long as you gave the presenter positive reinforcement and that "let me just clarify one point" type of deal, you shouldn't feel bad. It's like if a student presented something on Florida and they said the capital was Miami :lookaroun, you have to correct them, but nicely.

you are not a bad teacher I did something like that when I was student teaching I was in High School (a Senoir). My class was in 5th Grade and they took a test I was going over the answers and to me the question was common sence. well one student got it wrong and I said the answer was commen Sence. After that I felt bad and had to go appologize to that student.

Yeah, good thing you apologized. Trust me, sometimes it's hard to remember that these kids are learning material we learned and mastered years ago. I subbed for a fourth grade class and they did a verb quiz with helping verbs and such. Some of them were confused but I only went as far as asking them "didn't you guys learn this with Ms. P?" and they said no. I tried to explain the quiz without giving away any answers and the kids did just fine.

Don’t worry about correcting your student. It would have been a much greater injustice letting your students leave with the wrong information in their heads. As far as your methods I wouldn’t worry about that either. I know some people that would have had your student in a straight jacket with her eyes held open aka Clockwork Orange in front of a movie screen showing her the difference between DL and WDW.

There is nothing wrong with correcting someone when they are wrong. That is what teachers are there for. As long as you don't put down the student that made the presentation for her lack of something that isn't truly something she needed to know...then it is fine. You should have enlightened them on the subject.

Hey, I dont think you did anything wrong. There is a big difference between DL and WDW... You did the right thing by correcting your student! :D

You definitely did the right thing, the whole idea of learning is that sometimes you can be wrong about something. It is a common misperception that they are the same. I understand your feeling bad about gasping, but I think when you look back on it in years to come, you will laugh at your reaction.

Sorry about the typo in the years but I think everyone knew that I meant 1950's. Just got my laptop, and I'm still getting used to the smaller keyboard.

I forgot to put in my first post, tomorrow I will have student doing his report on the the Mickey Mouse Club. The report is supposed to be about the one in the 1950's. I hope I don't hear that the original members were Christina and Justin!

I was wondering how many people do something Disney for a class project: teachers and students can both feel free to chime in.

I know my daughter does anytime she can. Even right now her math class is doing a computer project where they have to spend exactly a million dollars. They have to back it up with a website, and they lose points for every penny they are over or under. She "booked" the most expensive trip she could put together.

And, my own students know not to question me on anything Disney. :)
