Florida couldn't give away a ticket all season long and the Phoenix Coyotes attendance is battling St. Louis for the lowest attendence in the league.

Maybe the Panthers are struggling, but the Lightning have solid fan support here in Tampa. (We're also [in]famous for being the loudest fans around. Having been to Game 5 of the Finals the year they won, I can certainly attest to that!!)

And your second sentence just goes to show that it's not only Southern or "new" teams that have problems. St. Louis is a well-established team. Of course, they've been playing terribly for some time now (as are the Coyotes) which doesn't help.

Bringing hockey to more markets is never a bad thing. It's a fantastic sport and the more people realize it's not a niche sport and that it's freakin' cool is a good thing. There's always cities who don't support their professional teams - hockey doesn't hold the exclusive on that. NFL, MLB, NBA all have "throwaway" teams that just don't carry their weight. Eventually, things even out pretty well though as there is normally another city happy to take over an ailing team.

Heck, Colorado couldn't support the Northstars and they moved to Texas, but not too many years later, they sell out every game for the Avalanche and have even brought home the Cup.

Point of order: The Stars moved to Dallas from Minnesota. Colorado's old team was the Rockies, who moved to NJ to become the Devils.

Yeah I realized in my fluster I misspoke but couldn't think of the correct name so I edited it until I could. Thanks for the correction. Still, point remains that teams can flourish in cities that aren't necessarily as steeped in Hockey Tradition. Will every team ever made turn out fantastic? No, of course not. But that's a failing of major league sports overall not just the NHL.
