I learned _____ at EPCOT.

I am currently enrolled in an Environmental Science class at my school and you wouldn't believe the amount of knowledge that tons of years of going to Living With the Land helps you in the class. I've also grown to learn from Epcot that you should never ride any attractions named Mission: Space or anything sponsored by HP.

"...then and only then will we be truely living with the land."

My children and I learned all about imagination with Dreamfinder and Figment.
Sadly the original Journey into Imagination was remade because of a contract Disney signed with Kodak.

I miss the original Figment also. At least this one has Figment in it a lot more than the first redo. When Kodak sponsored the original Figment Disney signed a contract that the ride would be redone before the year 2000. For those of you never got to experience the original Figment or if you would like to relive it this is a great website.

http://figmentsimagination.com/

Here is an except from that website that explains why the Original Figment ride was Changed:

"It has been confirmed by a Disney source that the original Journey Into Imagination was closed due to a contract agreement between Kodak and Disney. The contract stated that JII was to be changed by the year 2000. The original JII, due to large amounts of projectors, sets, lighting and animatronics, was VERY expensive to maintain each year. JII was the most advanced attraction of its kind in the US when it opened in 1983. Even when it closed, the technology involved with producing the show was ahead of other theme park attractions. Many Imagineers were not at all happy about making the changes because they had fear that the new attraction would fail. Armed with a budget far less than they had to build the original JII, the replacement opened and the fans were not happy. WDI realized that mistakes were made but at this point, there is no physical way to return the attraction to its original state because of the way the building has been altered and the money that would be needed to do it is not there. The current budget to redo JIYI is still not enough to restore the magic we all miss. But we will be able to see Figment again! "

This excerpt is from this site:

The chances of Figment making a full return looked bleak. Disney sold part of the ride props on eBay and used one of Dreamfinder's flying machines as a prop in the Mouse Gear store. Then the ride closed in the winter of 2002 for renovation and reopened in June of 2002 as Journey Into Imagination with Figment. While Eric Idle and the Imagination Institute are still featured, Figment has been added to every scene and a new version of One Little Spark is sung. Dreamfinder is still MIA but one of the lab office doors is now labeled as belonging to "Dean Finder".

There have been a lot of threads from people claiming that EPCOT Center (1982 to the late 90's) was the "educational" park, and that it's original intent was to "learn" something.

Alright folks. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

What did YOU learn at EPCOT?

How did this theme park widen your knowledge of the world?

What did EPCOT personally inspire you to do with your life?

(Don't include information you learned somewhere else... like school !)

To those who claim that "the original intent" of EPCOT is dead, I want to see just how "educational" the park really was. Obviously, I feel this whole "educational" thing is rubbish, and that the original vision of EPCOT failed with the general public. Still, I'll start off this thread with a legitimate answer:

** EPCOT's "Living Seas" pavillion inspired me to take up SCUBA diving.

** I learned from EPCOT's "The Land" that plants can be grown without soil, hanging in the air.

Alright, that's about all I can come up with (which says alot about the "educational" park) Your turn!

Based on the vast majority (nearly all) of the responses to your question, I think your point is definitely supported...and I agree. Even those who were trying to come up with actual examples didn't really come up with strong ones.

Or could it be the answers were given in a tone the original post deserved.

when i was in year 6 at school (about 9 or 10 years old) i had to do a project on a different country for geography. i choose Norway and when we (my family) went to WDW i spent about an hour talking with a few of the people from the Norway pavilion about the country and its traditions.

it was much easier and more entertaining to get this information from a real person who could talk from experiance that reading it from a book or the internet.

Or perhaps it's because EPCOT was meant to inspire someone to go out and learn or educate himself in hopes of a better future and to showcase some of the great accomplishments we have done as a species... and those who didn't clue into that may have just missed the point and called "Boring and educational" since they missed the "inspiration and challenge." EPCOT is not a university is not granting degrees, but it just may have inspired life and career decisions... :drevil:

Perhaps. But the original question was, "What did you learn at Epcot". People say it's original mission was to educate. But to what degree did it actually educate people? No one has referred to it as "inspiretainment".

I have learned many things from visiting EPCOT. For one thing I have learned many of the different customs and cultures of different countries from the Showcase of Nations. From The Land, I have learned about agriculture. From The Living Seas I learned about sea creatures. Each pavilion offers something that you can take from it. Each time I visit there is always something new and fresh.
My two favorites are Spaceship Earth and Illuminations Reflections of Earth. They both leave me feeling inspired. From a learning perspecitive they educate about world peace and our world of communication. They are very special.

Epcot has always helped me take boring facts that I learned in school and brushed off and recreate them as stories in my mind.

Learning about some dude painting a ceiling of a church in a textbook is boring. Going underneath Michelangelo and watching him decorate the ceiling of the Sistene Chapel 500 years after it happened puts a whole new spin on it.

Also I find that a lot of things that take place in my day to day life remind me of things I first learned about at Epcot. For example - everytime I video chat on my Macbook I am reminded of how many times I saw those 2 kids in Spaceship Earth doing it as I grew up and thinking how that probably wouldn't happen till long after I was dead. Also, I remember the first time I walked through the house of the future in innoventions (or whatever it's called) and learned about this new thing called "Digital Cable" and I thought to myself "wow, I'll never afford that kind of technology when it comes out"

I <3 Epcot. :)

I thought of something else. I learned a TON in the film "Circle of Life". Everytime I take a shower I think about how showers use more gallons of water than baths (something you learn in the preshow).

We learned that "education" is a heck of a lot more than just being able to regurgitate facts and figures. That true learning is really a matter of coming to understand teh world around us, and how we fit into that world.

Sounds like you spend part of your next trip to Epcot doing a little more than just riding the rides, and instead focus on exploring all the wonders that Epcot has in store.

What I learned at Epcot is that the US is FULL of stupid people that dont want to learn about anything outside of feeding their faces and going around in loops.

Its not that Epcot didnt teach and inspire, its failure showed that the majority of Americans are shallow and unmotivated ... this is being proven - just watch TV and what do you see (Reality TV) .. look at our college graduates rates in the sciences and math ...

The problem starts at home with the parents.

Epcot Center wasnt a failure, the morals and attitudes of our families are the failure.

Lets see.......

At The Universe of Energy Pavillion I learned that Ellen Degeneres is dumber than a box of rocks.

At The Wonders of Life pavillion, I learned that nobody much cares about health related topics while they're on vacation.

At The Land Pavillion I learned that Kitchen utensils, fruits, vegetables, and food wrappers can sing, dance and Rap.

At The Imagination Pavillion I learned that skunks spray smell in Florida is a lot more tolerable than the Skunks Spray smell here in Illinois where I'm from.

At Test Track I learned that you can go from having a GOOD hair day to having a BAD hair day in just a matter of seconds.

At The Living Seas Pavillion I learned that Jellyfish are florescent purple and that Turtles that talk sound like surfer dudes. I also learned that Manatees are relatively the same size and shape as my Mother in Law.

At Ice Station Cool I learned that on really hot days, the floor gets really sticky.

At Spaceship Earth I learned that when Rome burned, it smelled a lot like my weber grill.

and last but not least...

At Mission Space I learned that if you get in the wrong line, there's a really good chance that you'll throw up at some point that day.

Wow...I had no idea that EPCOT was such an educational park!

All that sounds great, but it still doesn't list anything specific that you learned from Epcot, which supports the OP's point.
