I have no idea, but if it's true I'll frickin die of happiness because I'm just a couple hours from Myrtle Beach!

I think it's an urban legend that's been making the rounds for a couple of weeks. We actually tried to track down real estate agents in the SC area who could confirm it about ten days ago, with no success.

It's unlikely Disney could make such a large purchase without it being mentioned on Google. I mean, I make mistakes; Google is all-knowing.

Well, Disney already has the Hilton Head resort in SC, less than 200 miles down the coast from Myrtle Beach.

I guess if they were to open another DVC resort, that'd give them more than enough land for a golf course and a few other activities, but I cannot imagine anything more than that being built, as Myrtle Beach isn't a large enough destination to warrant a Disney theme park.

Neither was Orlando in 1971! MB already caters to the family crowd, so it's feasible. But I agree with Len, I think it's another twist on the old "Disney bought land in my hometown" urban legend.

Just look at their quarter filings...

as the acquisition would be substantial (hundreds of millions to billions of dollars) and show up as a line item or be grouped into real estate as an asset with associated financing liability and shareholder equity. It certainly would be large enough to stand out. I'm not sure of Disney's financial year but timing of the transaction would determine which quarter it would impact. It would also show up in the year end report but may not stand out as much (especially if they don't want it to).

I'd agree with a golf course and a hotel, but Myrtle Beach is too close to WDW to have a theme park.

Its also way too close to WDW.

Also, 22,000 acres is roughly 35 square miles, meaning, really not that much smaller than WDW which is 47. According to the Myrtle Beach site, located here:
http://www.mbeach.com/area_info.php
Land prices are running anywhere between $500,000 and $750,000 per acre, while land leases are going for about $50,000-$80,000 per acre.

So Disney would be buying the land for a minimum of $11 billion dollars. Thats simply not going to happen.
There is the option that they would lease, but that is in the less than 1% of probability, because Disney would want to buy the land and not have to answer to a lease holder. If they were to lease, however, that would still be a $1.1b lease at the low end, and Disney wouldn't lease land for that amount of money.

The numbers are too big for this to be believable.

Now, it could be land thats somewhat outside of Myrtle Beach, but even then, the most they could hope to save is what, 25%? So that would be $8,250,000,000 for the purchase or $825,000,000 for the lease.

There are always rumors of huge Disney land purchases in the US. They simply won't build another destination resort here, because WDW is big enough to do everything they want to. They may do things like Hilton Head Island and Vero Beach, but nothing of this scale.

Edit: Not to mention the fact that I doubt there are 22,000 continuous acres up for sale anywhere near Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach is a huge golf destination, and definitely great for families. There are also lots of big entertainment venues and dinner shows (like Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, Carolina Opry, and the Alabama Theatre with name artists coming by). And it is clean.

So, I would see it as a great DVC destination, much better, I think, than Hilton Head ever was. Fits Disney's image and audience. So, although I agree that the math of this rumor lends itself to being false, I would think that Myrtle Beach would be a perfect candidate for a golf-oriented Disney Vacation Club resort... even with a Myrtle Beach version of the Hoop-de-do Revue dinner show. That alone would clean up in Myrtle Beach, even if it had to have a few adjustments and a different name, to make it unique.

Yeah, having stayed at Disney's HH resort a few times over the years, there isn't a lot to do there on the cheap / family side that we could find off property. Lots of expensive shopping and golf, though.

there are PLENTY of crowds that head to Myrtle beach -- i live in ohio, and just about everybody heads there for a week in the summer, and i hear it is the same from everywhere in the midwest -- why wouldn't disney want some of those $$ too.

I think it's a little to close to WDW, to get your hopes up for a park. I think it's a tall tale, I don't think they ever did. I think it's easy for people to want to believe in this because they would love for another park to be in the USA.

Hmm... It doesn't look like this is true, but the discussion has made me think of something. I'm torn on this happening. I would love to have a Disney park so nearby, but I grew up with Walt Disney World, and I don't like the idea of switching to another park. I wouldn't mind visiting some others, but the World is, and will always be, my Disney park.

Not sure if it is the same rumor, but there is another theme park arriving in Myrtle Beach that was just approved. Hard Rock Cafe bought the land...

I also heard that they're building a 5th park and expanding the monorail and adding a Harry Potter attraction to EVERY PARK!

Not going to happen, especially looking at Thrawn's math.
