I have a problem. My ears are broken. Just a smart- way of saying I am deaf... sort of. I can still hear some. Anyway, just thought I would let you guys know that it is horrible not being able to enjoy about 66% of TV... (NO Closed-Captioning) and all DVD movies do not Close Caption their special features... some do, but very rarely. I am asking all of you why I am getting screwed over... they got wheelchair ramps everywhere... why not Closed captioning? BTW I am not offending anyone in a wheelchair... I'm glad that they got the ramps actually. Just brooding here while waiting for my computer animated movie to render for a class at Iowa State University.

Hi, Wagner.

Sorry to hear that your ears are broken. :( Were you born deaf or is it something that has occurred over time? Did you know that Rush Limbaugh is going deaf? TV programs/movies really should be closed captioned, shouldn't they? I mean there's that Americans with Disabilities Act that made employers, etc. put in ramps, etc. - well, what about the deaf getting some closed-captioning? How have you found your visits to Disney World? Do they have any accomodations for the deaf?

I'm with the little gnat on this.....I thought the ADA was suppose to take care of all of this. Perhaps an email to them might get you an answer.....

Yeah....poor Rush....people ask him questions on the radio and there is dead air cuz he can't hear anymore...very sad indeed.

There is a special pass at WDW for hearing impaired...it allows the person to ride an attraction twice in a row cuz of the hearing problem....at least the use to have it.

hang in there Wagner...perhaps technology will someday correct your problem permanently.

Well... I was born deaf. At first the doctors didn't think I could possibly be DEAF... at first they thought I perhaps had a mild hearing loss... but not DEAF... because on the intelligence tests I took, my "IQ" was through the ceiling.. (like that means anything) and the supposedly professional doctors thought that there was no way I could be so clever and deaf. That was in 1983. How times have changed huh? As far as the ADA, the only meaningful thing they have done is to require a close caption decoder in all new TVs made past 1992.... it simply decodes the captioning.. it doesn't provide the captioning.. the TV show has to do it themselves... and they most often don't... (except primetime on the big 4) As far as Disney... only about 15% of the preshows are closed-captioned.. on the TV screens and stuff... so I have never heard the AA figures singing... I have never known exactly what those aliens were talking about on Space Mountain... blah... blah... but I shouldn't give the wrong impression... my life has been great... I did everything.. that doctors thought I would never do... they told my mom that I would read at a 4th grade level as an adult.. if even that! Ha. I read at a college level when I was in 3rd grade. Sports would be difficult for me. Ha. I was a starter on a 4-A football playoff team... cornerback... and I ran track for a 4-A state runner-up team... (4x400m) when I was in high school. The list goes on and on... not to toot my own horn or anything like that ;)
Overall, theme parks stink in terms of having all of the sound bytes accessible... however I have a loving family that has told me what was going on.

Wagner, please allow me to make a very general respose to your specific post. We must ALL remember that we, and those we love, are only an accident, disease, or physical occurance away from being disabled in some way! An accident, stroke, illness, or just plain old age, could, and will(if we live long enough), leave any one of us permanently disabled, which is why we must do everything possible to insure that the ADA is enforced, even at an inconvenience to ourselves at the present time.

BTW, sometimes trying to enforce the ADA on a personal level can be annoying to others! Yesterday I took my father (who uses a walker, with difficulty, but is not ready to use a wheelchair) to the doctors. I drove his car, because he can't step up into mine, and his has the handicapped sticker. I, of course, parked in a handicapped spot. The appointment, as usual, was running late, and I had to pick up my son at school, so ran out to get him. Of course, I was alone getting into the car, and someone felt the need to tell me what a terrible person I was for parking in a handicapped space! I didn't have time to go into it with him, but just remember, folks, things are not always what they seem, and sometimes you should not rush to judge people!

Hey you've got every right to toot your own horn, but if you hang around here long enough I'm sure you'll find someone to toot if for you: :animwink:
