I Got my Blood Test done

If you remember from Rob's Blood Donating thread, I was supposed to go for an annual blood test, and I have finally gotten it done. I do not like needles.

It wasn't too bad, just a bit of pain during the actual extracation. A few minutes later, I started feeling really dizzy and naueous. The nurse said this was due to an extreme drop in blood pressure. I did feel better a few minutes afterwards.

Wish me luck in getting the results!

I just donated blood for my first time last week. The needle prick did hurt the most...except when the nurse was moving the needle around in my arm a little bit...

Thankfully, I didn't have much bruising...until I drove 4 hours home last Friday for a wedding...then my arm turned NASTY colors... it's on my My Space pics...

Ya, it really hurts when they move it. I could feel the blood squishing into the container. YUCK!

The last time I had it done, about an hour later- my entire arm turned a blackish-blue. :lookaroun

You are so right on that. My first time was years ago, and it hurt like h*ll. The worst is the finger prick. OMG that was painful.

The secret to a painless (well almost) finger stick is to do it on the side of the finger, not the tip or flat surface.

Oh, I'll post the URLs to the pics, if you'd like...

(that's the inside of my arm, where I gave blood. And yes, in the background, there is a Piglet on the floor, and a WDW bag)

(And that's the outside of my arm...the bruise went from the inside to right by my elbow...you can see the healing tinge on my arm)

My wife and I donate blood every 8 weeks and the person doing the sticking can make a huge difference. At the blood bank we donate at there are 4 or 5 techs working on the weekends. Two of these techs have been there for the 3 or 4 years we have been donating the other three seem to be different people every time. When one of techs that have been there forever sticks you it is painless. This is very rarely so for the others. I have only passed out 1 time. When one of the rookies stuck me the needle became clogged. She moved it around in my arm like a swizzle stick trying to get the blood to start flowing again with no success. I felt a little queasy but otherwise fine. As soon as the cold air from outside hit my face night night time.

One of my friends (who happens to be an EMT, and gay) told me that he's convinced some of his other gay friends to donate blood. They needed their blood type, and his excuse was "If nothing else, you lose a pint of blood, get some cookies and soda, and it's also a free HIV test." Which isn't how you SHOULD look at it. But it convinced some of his friends to donate.
Unfortunately, some of his friends were found ineligible.

Well there is that one question…”Are you a male that has had s$% with another male since 1977?” :lookaroun

But truly whatever gets people to donate is a good thing. The numbers they publish at the blood bank indicate that only 3% of eligible donors actually donate blood.

They also told us that if everyone who donates once would donate again during the year, there would be no shortages.

I am an every 8-weeker. Desirable blood type (O negative and also CMV negative--my blood goes to babies), so they call me every 8 weeks.

I tried doing platelets--kinda interesting--they take the blood out, centrifuge out the platelets and plasma, and pump the red cells back in. However, it really did me in for the rest of the day when I did it. And, to be fair, I did donate 5 times before I decided it wasn't worth it.

I don't know what my blood type is yet. I'll find that out when I get my donor card. What really sucks for me is that I can be any blood type but O. One of my parents is A, the other is AB

I hate blood test, I just switched doctors and I have to get a blood test any way. I have to see what type of condition my body is in, because Chris & I want to have children.
