I don't know where to start!

It's been five years since I last visited WDW. At one time I could say I felt comfortable with booking a trip and knowing I was getting the best bang for my buck. Unfortunately I've been out the loop since then.

I'm planning on traveling to the World with my girlfriend and her 5 year old son in February. I'm thinking either 8 or 10 days. How do I do this on a budget? A value resort is definitely part of the plan. Is the meal plan worth while? Can anyone give me some pointers on finding the best price on airline tickets?

I'm sure I have a thousand more questions that will surface in the course of the next couple days.

Thanks! :)

If I were you I would talk to a travel agent and we have some of the best here with Kingdom Konsultants. Why don't you give Pam or one of her agents a call, they will answer all of your questions and make sure that you do get the most for your money. They are all members here and big time Disney fans... http://www.kingdomkonsultant.com/
They are great at finding the best deal for the money and will bend over backwards to make sure everything is perfect for your trip.

From one fellow RIer to another, I assume you want to fly out of TFGreen. My advice about that would be to shop around for flights - don't rule out Hartford or Boston. Last year we had planned to go during February school break. We saved over $100 for the 2 of us to drive to Hartford, stay at a hotel very close to the airport and leave the car there for a week.

Anyway, when are you planning to go?

FREE DINING - worth it. Paying for the Dining Plan: Not worth it. Between shelling out for extras, tip and alcoholic beverages, you don't save much and sometimes end up overeating for no reason. Some times the portions are so big you can split the entire thing and purchase a kid's meal for your GF's son - save your money ;)

If you do this yourself - look for flight prices Tues, Wed, and Thurs. Most people tend to book Fri-Mon, so the deals tend to be better during the week.

I know people say they don't save any money using the dining plan. I don't see how this is possible. I typically save around $10 per person per day, which I know that isn't a fortune, but at the end of the week that's $70 less than what you would have spent. You're looking at a snack: around $3-4, a counter service: around $10-sometimes $15 with meal, drink and dessert, and table service: around $30-$45 with meal, drink, and dessert. By my calculations, that's at BEST $43 per day, up to $64+ per day per person, and with the dining plan $40something per day, you will either come out even (and have the dining plan convenience) or save $20+ per person per day. So needless to say, I am a DDP supporter until they tear it down so much it becomes not worth it :)

Depending on what your budget is, I think you can find a fairly reasonable rate for that time period and it's almost worth it, ticketwise to stay those few extra days.

When it comes to the DDP, it really depends on what kind of plan your going for if it becomes good for you. If you're just planning on doing Counter Service meals, I really don't think that the DDP is worth it. You will probably spend less just paying out of pocket. If you're going for TS meals too, then I think it's a little more worth it. While I don't know how much money you would actually save, it is a good way to have almost everything paid for before going on the trip, though not including tips doesn't make it as nice as it used to be. It's also fairly convenient, since you won't have to carry around as much cash on you while walking around the parks.

If you're going to talk to an agent, I'm sure they'll be able to tell you everything you'll need to know (including whether or not the Dining Plan is right for you). We don't use the Dining Plan; we find that it gives us too much food, we could get a better deal with a room-only discount, or that for the restaurants we want to eat at it's a better value to pay out-of-pocket. If you decide not to do the Dining Plan, it might be worth it to plan on having breakfast in the room (ie, bring a box or two of cereal in your suitcase or buy it in Florida, then just purchase milk in the food court, which is cheaper than buying everyone a full breakfast every day). If you're not breakfast people, this doesn't really help much; but for us, who all eat breakfast, it saves about $30 a day. Over the course of the trip, it adds up. Anyway, just a thought!
