I Don't Have The Heart To Tell Her

Going through the same thing with a few family members right now. We are going down January 22nd-29th and suggested they come down with us. We got flights for $89.00 each way on Jetblue and rented an offsite villa with plenty of room for a couple more. The idea of chilly temperatures deferred their planning and they have decided to go in July. FOURTH OF JULY WEEK! I told them before booking of my past experiences going in July. Between the extreme heat, tour groups with flags and 40 minute wait times for pirates I thought they would change their minds. All they keep saying is "your going to freeze your behind off." I've gone to wdw in January many times in the past and yes there were times it was quite cold. I'm from Boston though, nothing i've never experienced before. I simply suggested that they pack for all types of weather and come with us... the know it alls arent having it.
$89 airfare to Florida in January? How did you managed that? Trying to surprise my mother for her 95 birthday, on January 27th -- would be flying into West Palm Beach, probably out of White Plains or LaGuardia.

My neighbors took their twins last year on December 28 - Jan 3rd for the girls 8th birthday surprise . I told my neighbor it would be really crowded and she really need to plan and make sure she was at the parks before rope drop. Did they listen???? NO! The girls had a wonderful time anyway, but when i was asking them about this ride or that ride or the fireworks they would say "We didn't get to do that." I said why not it was to crowded and we would get to the park eat lunch then the rides had long long lines. One of them said on the last day we mom read the book you made for her and we got to MK early and guess what we got Picked for family of the day. i was so happy they had a good time but if they would have listened they would have gotten everything done and had a wonderful trip.

I did the same thing to someone looking to visit NYC during Christmas time.

Me: "That hotel is famous for being a dump."
Him: "No hotel in the theater district a block from Times Square is going to be that bad."
Me: "Fine, stay there."
1 month later...
Him: "There was a bleeping rat in the hall of my hotel!"
Me: "You don't say."

Me: "I know you hate crowds and get claustrophobic so for the Rockefeller Center tree you might be better off cutting through the building and getting your photos from that side."
Him: "I have to walk through those angels and see the rink. Also we plan skating there."
Me: "You are going to be packed in though, just be warned."
Him: "You are exaggerating."
1 month later...
Him: "Why didn't you warn me about how crowded it gets there?!"
Me: "@#%&"

My brother is one who believes he knows more about everything than almost everyone on the planet and almost without exception refuses to take any advice.

It's very annoying. I learned, over the years, to just not try to help him. He's going to do what he thinks is best, no matter what.

You cannot help those people. You have to let them figure it out for themselves.

Are we related?!?!? You share my brother. I joke that he could never go on Mastermind as his specialist subject is "Everything".

Some times you just have to let them find out on their own. When my friends wife informed me they were going to WDW for the first time and stated they have it all down pat from where to stay, things to do and places to eat. I just said if you have questions please ask and I will help and if not have a Magical Day. I got looked at from her by what do you mean have a Magical day. Boy did I hear and ear full when they came back. Then I was asked all the questions about Resorts, Dinner plans, food plans, when to go and not go and things to do. I was glad to help answer all their questions and was glad they had a fun time with and eye opening experience. Sometimes when you think you have all the answers you have to learn lessons via experience like we all have done.

It's a challenge to be nice to know-it-alls, but it's still the Christian thing to be.

"You know, for some crazy reason, probably because of limited school vacations, Christmas and New Years breaks are really crowded in the parks. You might want to learn about fastpasses and make some restaurant reservations."

Yeah, she may disregard your advice, or call you a fool, but you will have been right. And you will have warned her. Maybe, just maybe, she'll hold more respect for you next time you give advice. We're going from Dec. 21st through the 26th, and we know it'll be insane. Dinner reservations have been in for months, and our expectations are far more modest than for our usual times in mid-November. Given schedules, this is the only time we could go this year.

I found it on Kayak.com then booked directly through Jetblue.com. We are flying Wednesday - Wednesday. January 22nd-29th out of Logan Airport in Boston. Check it out. Both flights are nonstop. I booked about 2 months ago but the flights are still pretty affordable for nonstop.

I live near West Palm and it is usually cheaper to fly White Plains to Ft Lauderdale. Ft Lauderdale is only about a 30 minute drive north to WPB.

While it will be fun to stand by and watch her trip implode, it will be even MORE fun if you try to warn her multiple times and she still doesn't listen.

I'd also casually mention that she may want to do some planning and expect crowds. If nothing else, then to have the opportunity to slip in a little "told you so" when she doesn't listen and comes back complaining.:angelic:

Update: Earlier this morning I started to let the cat out of the bag. I didn't want to come across as one of those doomsday prophets & rain on her parade. I made it more of a lighthearted banter and joked about how brave she was to endure those types of crowds that hit WDW during the week between Christmas & New Years.
She semi-agrees, but mentions (again) that's why they're waiting until after Christmas to go, since many people will be busy enjoying their gifts at home.:banghead:

I didn't want to argue, nor did I want to come across as a Disney know-it-all who HAS to throw his two-cents into anyone's trip. So I just told her that if she has any questions or needs any advice, to ask me anytime.

Conscience = cleared
