I can't play .wmv files

When I go to play .wmv files, they just stop working after about 3 seconds into the video. The audio keeps going, but the video just stops. I've gotten all the latest updates and they still won't play!! They used to play but for some reason one day they decided not to. Has anyone had this problem before?

A week or so ago, I went crazy trying to figure out the same problem. I spent hours on the phone with DELL testing everything out...reformatted my hard drive cuz they told me I must have a virus...changed the ethernet card, TWICE...Finally, after calling my cable provider and talking to someone that knew what the hell he was talking about, he detected a problem in my modem...new modem, no more problems...

Go to this website and check the speed of your modem...when my modem was bad, it would freeze...now, it returns 1,784kbs...lightning fast again....wow...oh, and the videos are back working again too.

Hope this helps ya out!

As Tramp says its most likely a connection problem. Lucky tramp has a REALLY fast line, so he will have no problems playing the video in real time. For most people though, they will need to download the file to their PC before they play it. So instead of doing a left click on the video link, do a RIGHT CLICK, and do SAVE TARGET AS.. once the file has compeltely downloaded to your machine it will play just fine. :)

The other alternative is to get a really fast connection like Tramps ;)

I suggest the latter, only... a word of warning...

If you go High Speed, you will never go back... so only do it if you are finacially able and of course if it's available in your area. It is great though. :)

My cable company charges $29.95 per month and they give me the modem too....that's only a few dollars more than AOL dial-up but the performance is lightyears better...I have to agree with ya, Spider, I'm spoiled and I don't think I could ever go back.

Thanks for the help but it's not when I'm trying to play videos offline. I already have the videos here in my computer, it's just that when I play them they stop about 3-5 seconds into them. I'm tried upgrading media player, and I have all the codecs. ANy other ideas.?

$29.95 a month!? Who is your provider?

I pay $45 a month and that is after a discount for being a television cable customer!

Just the same, I think I'd have to forget the internet for good if I ever had to go back to dialup. I get frustrated because the network here in the office isn't as fast. :(

I've seen plants growing quicker than my connection.

I use Optimum Online...they're pretty big here in the NY, NJ and CT area...I think it's $39.95, maybe more, if you don't subscribe to their cable TV...:)

What's odd is that this is a competitive market because the local phone company also offers cable television and cable internet access on top of their DSL packages as well... Those sneaky price fixers!

Are you able to play other video formats...such as Real Media and Quicktime?

Have you tried deleting the media player and downloading/reinstalling the latest version. Media Player now has a version 9.

...I tried to watch a movie trailer a few weeks back and the media player stalled...apparently the movie had been encoded with a 'divX' codec that media player didn't support. You have to download it from their site...at www.divX.com.

The reason I upgraded to windows media player 9 was because my old wmp 7.1 wouldn't play anything! I have another computer here I can use to watch .wmv files on. The main reason I want to get it working is because I want to get a full legnth video of CoP up. I'll see waht I can do. Thanks for all of your help! :)

WOW...3500...thats fast...I've been using a speed check based in England so maybe that has some influence. I use the local Optimum Online provider in Norwalk, CT.

I think Mr. P cursed me cuz my service was just increased to $39.95...thank you, Mr. P.:)
