Hurricane Matthew

I just watched a periscope and two ladies staying at POR said their boxed lunch was a snack credit on their DDP.

Maybe Disney isn't so bad after all. :)

My thoughts are with everyone at Disney and Florida tonight. Thinking of you all and sending my love. Stay safe Disney.

The MDE app on your phone?
The same phone that could have the weather channel app?

No question that guests have a responsibility to be informed (FWIW I'm the sort who always checks the emergency exit plans ICOE). It's not an either/or responsibility, it's a shared responsibility on the part of the guest and on the part of WDW. I think what Disney should do is have issued a basic notification about the severity of the storm. Any and every major institution with tens of thousands of people on their property has an emergency management plan (especially since 9-11)... visitors/ guests should have easy access to this information, and it should be specific to the nature of the emergency and include info on WDW response. It reflects poorly on them to not have a basic level of preparedness IMO, given the size of their operations.

As someone who checked out today, I was surprised at the lack of info as well. It didn't inconvenience me in the least... But seeing as how there is a brochure in my room and signs at all parks warning about Mosquitos, it seems odd that nothing was mentioned about the hurricane or the plans that Disney had in place. A simple letter and some signs saying "hey a hurricane is coming, we plan on x/y/z but be prepared for a/b/c."

I use the dark sky app to stay dry, and have been watching the weather channel constantly on this trip to plan around wearher and food and wine events. I was totally aware, but still surprissd Disney didn't inform people better. didn't inconvenience me at all... Just an observation.

The lack of accountability is what's wrong with the world today.

And what's wrong with the forums today is you have people who jump in full-throttle lambasting people (who are still in an emergency situation, mind you) to make some general political statement about "the world today" without acknowledging the clear Disney difference here.

Disney prides itself on advertising how you can basically just give them your credit card number and they will take care of everything else. To leave the real world outside and come into the bubble. You don't even need your own transportation. Everything is taken care of for you.

This is just like the alligator discussion. You will find most of us agree OVERALL and IN GENERAL about lack of personal responsibility being an issue, but in this context and at this time, those of you using it as a political grandstand moment just look like teenage internet trolls.

I'm asking this in earnest., What should they have warned people about?
I'm completely confused. What exactly were they supposed to say? "In case you all have been completely off the grid for the past week or so, Hurricane force winds may possibly hit tomorrow morning, maybe, we're not sure yet, but they might."?

There really is no excuse for them to not have a better notification/ warning system given the size of the property and available technology eg MDE app as previous posters have suggested.

Yeah I can't excuse that either. It would have been trivially easy and then could have directed folks where to get more info.

As you may see earlier in this thread, I don't think creating a panic the way some thought they should was the right idea, but yesterday/today they could have done simple things like make an announcement on the app of what to do or where to get more information as needed.

It's called a balanced opinion...a middle ground...I know, crazy!

$12.99. For 2 slices of bread a piece of cheese, a greasy cookie, and an apple. $12.99. No water. $12.99

We are supposed to be checking in tomorrow.

Last night, we had to drive down from the Jacksonville area to pick up our son from UCF since they were evacuating today. I'm hoping the weather is clear enough later tomorrow evening to check in - we'll go 75 to the turnpike and stay off of 95 an 4 - but really want to make sure our house is OK before we leave (we ARE in the hurricane zone currently). We would have liked more notice from Disney - are they still going to allow check-ins tomorrow or not? How about an email telling guests that MIGHT BE arriving tomorrow what to expect - or even to stay away (if they asked, we would stay away).

I have a silly question.

Could you use a DDP credit to purchase the embarrassing 12.99 Hurricane ration?

According to this, yes:

Friday after 6pm should be fine. However, driving on the roads is the problem. There may be widespread damage.

I am staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge-Jambo. Disney has been contacting guests and asking permission to enter their rooms to remove the chairs and tables from their balconies. They also have letters in the common areas to inform guests. I also received a call to let me know that my advanced dining reservation was cancelled for tonight at Jiko. Also the staff are removing animals from the savanna around the hotel.

There just wasn't much information to relay. Orlando is not an evacuation zone. You were safe. You have a phone, access to the Internet, and televisions.

If you make the choice to book a vacation during hurricane season, then it's probably wise to know the weather in that area... And If you do know that there is a hurricane that could potentially head towards your area, then it would be even more wise to check updates regarding it's path.

I guess I just don't understand what more people wanted Disney to do.

Especially when there was not even a hurricane in Orlando today. At what point are our travel plans our own responsibility?

I think there may be some misunderstanding as to my point here. In no way am I suggesting that people should not stay informed themselves. You are absolutely right that you have multiple avenues to obtain information on the storm, be it phone, tv, or internet. And I frankly think it's stupid for anyone to travel during hurricane season and not check for the possibility of, y'know, hurricanes.

What I mean in terms of information is that once it became clear the resorts would be impacted, resort guests should have been kept up to speed regarding operational procedures. Not backstage things, per se, but things directly pertinent to them.

I know that we are supposed to shelter in place until the afternoon tomorrow - because I explicitly asked a cast member last night, and because it was mentioned in one of the forum threads. At no point did I receive any official notice from Disney regarding this. Or that we should be on the lookout for the room phone's message icon lighting up with possible information. Someone else at my own resort spoke about notices being handed out door to door - we've been here since before 4pm, and no one has stopped here. Dining is closing early tonight at Pop, but the only phone message I had was warning me not to try to eat at outside Disney resorts because reservations wouldn't be honored and touting the 12.99 bagged meal. No mention of the shortened hours.

All my information has been sussed out by my own searching. It takes very little to send those types of updates, be it notes under hotel doors, in person by staff, email, and it is something that I have received at other hotels during natural disasters. And especially in light of the extensivness of MDE, it's something that could be accomplished easily. It would have alleviated the confusion of many hotel guests, especially those who have no experience with hurricanes.

I'm hardly blaming Disney for not being a duplicate of the Weather Channel. I'm certainly not blaming them for the hurricane. All I'm saying is that there could have been a more direct and consistent way to keep resort guests appraised.

I don't think Disney does sarcasm. :)

It is a judgment call re: a weather emergency, to be sure. All I'm saying is they should have the means to inform guests in a timely fashion, beyond a piece of paper under the door or voicemail (as not all guests stay on property). The Weather Channel app isn't going to have Disney-specific information.

So you check up on the local building codes whenever you are traveling? Letting people know that the EPCOT Builing Codes are some of the first and most stringent codes in the state, including when it comes to wind loads, could have been part of letting people know that staying in their rooms will be the safest option if/when the storm hits.

..... while we're all Kvetching about how informed humans should/should not be.....

For perspective? The Death toll in Haiti is 283. This will rise. Some Morons people in Halifax harbor in Daytona Beach are going to ride out the storm on their boat tied to a palm tree. I'll be surprised if they live. Not trying to be cold or harsh, its just the reality of the situation.

This is a deadly storm at Disney is doing what they have to do in order to keep guests safe and people alive. I personally dont feel they should be charging $13 for a sammich but depending on the aftermath, $13 may be cheap for a sammich.
