That is what they said about Tropical Storm Sandy in 2012. Once it hits New England with all the mountains it will quickly die out, then it hit Southern Vermont wiping out roads and power and that is hundreds of miles inland. Never underestimate nature!
Sure but there’s no reason to cause the poster panic when the chances of it hitting Florida significantly is even pretty remote at this point.

over the years we have found we get great info on storms from Mike's weather page! We lived in SFL until recently. William is the only hurricane in which the eye passed over my house, my wife was 9 months pregnant at the time -- nothing like having power out in three counties for weeks -- so we are in central FL now and the idea of Elsa being our first storm in our new home is just -- hope she lets us be and she finds a way to fizzle w/o bothering us land folks.

As a meteorologist myself, I know some colleagues who have been encouraged to embellish a bit when it comes to tropical forecasting. But I can assure you the vast majority of us genuinely care about making sure the general public is aware, prepared, and safe. I can tell you as of now that a majority of the models bring Elsa near or over the state of Florida. That may change in the coming days, but that's the data we have currently.
We had planned to drive from Virginia to Orlando on Tuesday. Would you try to add a day before and do the driving on Monday, or wait a day or two and drive down once the storm has passed? I’m kind of leaning toward going a day early. I wouldn’t hate being in the room for a day, and I certainly don’t feel good about having to drive through a hurricane/aftermath tornadoes etc! But I don’t want to be there with no electricity and no food. Thoughts?

I don't see anyone panicking, especially those in the projected path. It is important to know that the possibilities exist. As it gets closer then they will be aware of its coming. They have been through this stuff many times and are always prepared. If the projected paths are correct, even this far out, it will hit with force, but nothing the magnitude of some of the Hurricanes they have had. I think it is terrific that the weather abilities are so much better then they once were. Whomever the chief meteorologists are in our area are very accurate. 90% of the time if they say that rain will start at 10am tomorrow, you better have an umbrella in your hand at 10am or you are going to get wet.

NHC will be issuing a special advisory within the hour so we may have some additional information then now that it is a Hurricane.
