Thank You!!! Uhm when did they do the boat with the mermaid bones? Only reason I ask is last October 2012 I do not remember seeing it.
On the beach, look IN the boat (towards the right hand side, next to the standing skeleton). The skeleton laying down is actually a mermaid... It's got a tail! :)

You can see it in this shot:

I see what your talking about, but I was asking "when did they add the boat and mermaid bones" as I do not remember seeing them during my October 2012 visit to WDW.

Oh, oh! I'm sorry. Umm... You know, I'm not totally sure exactly when. It was definitely there last year. It may go back as far as the "Jack Sparrow refurb" of 2006... But the "Jolly Sailor Bold" song is much more recent.

Guess I need to stop paying so much attention to the wife (NOT!) and look at the details of the ride a little more.

You must have just missed it. The were installed the end of October 2012.
I had a feeling some of it, at least, was very recent... The giveaway was the song. Were all mermaid-related things in this area added then? I was there at the end of November and all current elements were definitely there (which you can see in the tenth picture, taken during this partcular trip).

Skull is cool. The song is not, I dont find it haunting at all. What was haunting was the creepy voiceover repeating 'dead men tell no tales' over and over again.
Yes! Yes! Yes!

PotC is beggining to feel like giving a pizza to an eight year old with a selection of toppings. He'll just continue to pile toppings on and on and on until the whole is just one big squishy tasteless mess.

The beginning of Pirates was already spooky and eerie. The mermaid song and skeleton don't make it any more scary, in fact, they blur the story. The way adding singing country bears to Splash wouldn't make SM more cute, or richer in story, but less.

I kind of want this to be two separate rides- the original one, and another for the movies. But I'll try to reserve real judgement until I get the chance to ride it again.

I so wish they would've done this! I like the movies, but they feel like a different universe to me. Wish they would've been turned into a ride in DHS.
(Which I don't mean as a sarcastic reference to the new Captain Sparrow attraction)

Oh, I totally agree - the original is much, much better. No Jack Sparrow, the original song (which was much more prominent), the pirates chasing the women...

Here's another fun fact. The "fire" burning up in the windows? Fans, blowing sheets and a red light. :)

It's a nice effect, but it distracts from the ride's story that the boat is going through escape tunnels that happen to be full of pirate bones to leave the fortress and get to safety because the pirates are attacking. If it was chucked into Disneyland's version, which is more of a journey through time and space, it'd be a little more okay.
