HUGE 20K/it's a small world rumor/update

Ok, I just got information last night about something I think is huge news! One reason the rehab is taking so long for IASW is that they are taking lots of precautions inside the building. It turns out that there is a lot of asbestos (I believe that's what it was, or something that they had to take out of the ceiling) because it could be harmful to the guests. If the problem isn't that severe, they will be able to fix it there. If the problem is severe and would be very costly and basically say the building can not be used, they will have to do something else. So what's the something else: if they can't fix the problem in the building IASW is in now, they will build a new building on the 20K site and have it look and be practically the same ride as in DL. I just thought I would share this information with all as it gives you an idea as what might happen at 20K. This could be one reason why nothing is being planned for sure yet at the site. Also, if the current IASW building is taken down, something WILL take it's place there.

(sorry if this has been posted already)

MY 1000TH POST! :sohappy:

20K is gone.. dead..gone.. it is being filled in as we speak. It will be a new "soft play" area for the kids.

Small World is being painted and all sorts of rehab. Yes there was asbestos in the building and it's being removed. The building will not be torn down.

It's a rather safe bet that most ANY old building at WDW has or had asbestos in it. I could show you even new buildings that have it. The areas are clearly marked with a sign or warning sticker if there is asbestos in the area.

I know that 20K is gone, and it's being turned into a garden right now. I'm saying that the reason there isn't a ride being built right now is because of the possibility that IASW might not open if the asbestos problem is too big. I got the information from an insider source whom shall be unnamed. They told me that was the reason they made the rehab date opening so much later was because of that possiblity. And they are keeping 20K open right now (garden and not ride) for the sake that IASW might be moved there if that's the case. All I'm doing is passing along information that I found out last night.

Soft play area?!?! WHered you hear that?? THe only things I've heard that are going there is 1) an expansion of Toontown 2)A snow white stage show, or 3) A Harry Potter attraction, thers is probably more but I don't remember them right now...but I've never heard of a "soft play" area for kids, really thats a waste of space.

I suppose the garden will be temporary to put something actually there.

The few things I'd love to see be converted into the 20k space would be expansion of Toon Town to be more like DL's, a new dark ride ( marry poppins perhaps ).

IaSW on the 20K lagoon area.....I like the sound of that! :D

Just think of what could happen -- we'd get the incredible exterior, and a longer and better ride inside. Then, where IaSW currently stands, we'd (hopefully) get a nice dark ride or something of the sort.

Too bad it will probably never happen though.

If what I was told last night does happen, and it moves to the 20K site, then they would be able to do a lot with it. They would have a lot space to work with and could do some incredible theming with the outside. The ride could be a lot longer with the space they have, and they could probably even get another ride in there with it as the space is huge. And yes, where IASW is now, it would be used as another ride.

Where are the warning signs/stickers that tell if there is asbestos in the area? Thanks!

WDWScottieBoy, Major Question: What was your source for this?

I think it's so cool!! I think with 20K being gone now they need something right away. Small World would provide that "right away" thing.

In the "old" Small World building they could put something like a new dark ride, or better yet a new family coaster!! Or a Skyway!! Or a... the possibilites are endless.

Glad to know I'm not the the only one who thinks this would be an excellent idea. It would also help with the congestion in the area too. As for my source...:zipit: sorry. But I can tell you this much, it's a credited source. :animwink:

The garden area replacing 20k has been discussed on this board for over a month now.

Asbestos is a common form of magnesium silicate which was VERY WIDELY used in various construction products due to it's stability and resistance to fire. The reason it isn't used any longer is that is was found to cause some forms of cancer after PROLONGED exposure. Removing this is not a problem. Is it a little complicated? Yes, but the building will certainly not be torn down.

Do you have any idea how much it would cost them to completely gut IASW and build a new one? Disney simply won't spend that much money to build a completely new ride. It has no benefit for them.

Whomever gave you this news is either seriously misinformed, or pulling your leg.

This person has worked for the company for quite some time now and knows what they are talking about. But I will back out of this thread now as I don't want to start anything. Sorry for bringing it up in the first place. :(

OHhhh, just think of all the stroller parking space! :)

A perfectly good point, I asked about that last night too. If it is moved there, what about the skyway station? He said it would still be there as it is needed for sure with not only IASW but that whole area. And the 20K site has so much room that the stroller parking wouldn't be a problem at all.

Small world was closed because it's been outsourced to the Mexico Pavilion where the dolls have a cheaper labor rate.

It is interesting though that WDW waited all this time to do anything with 20K and it nearly coincided with IASW's rehab. But I can't believe that building a new building with a new ride moat would be quicker than a clean up of the current building. Even if they had to take everything down to bare framing, it's just new insulation and sheet rock.

You're not starting anything, and I believe that the guy you talked to has been there a long time. I'm just passing along the truth.

I wasn't trying to be rude, just factual. It definitely qualifies as a rumor, though. So don't let someone who disagrees with you stop you from posting things you find out within the parks.

Hey, it's an interesting read and idea, and that's what we're all here for.

And I understand it's a rumow, which is why I put in the title of this thread that it was a "rumor" to start with. I'm just saying that it could lead to what I was told, no one knows for sure yet as they don't know the damage done inside the building is quite yet. We'll know in a matter of time, that's all!
