On the picture at the new site, they show a possible stop at Disney. While this is good news for us Disney fans, wait for the politics to start on Friday.

Disney has already agreed to build a station on property. Part of what made this such an obvious choice for funding.

So, was Florida the only state to receive this funding?

No there is about 8 billion to go around. You might want to read the complete high speed rail thread I bumped. I explain everything, and I mean everything, as to why Florida is a GREAT choice for High Speed Rail.

Congradulations Central Florida. :sohappy:

31 states and 13 HSR "corridors." Apparently, Florida wasn't the only politically palpable locale for these funds.

It's also nice to see something concrete coming from all that stimulus cash. I think a lot of people have gotten the feeling it was for nothing, because projects weren't immediately undertaken. Hopefully there will be more projects like this around the country.

As I have said before, this will be a perfect test bed to prove or disprove the viability of high speed rail in the USA. That is why I support this. Because if it works, you will see private industry step in and be a partner in building high speed rail. In that light, this is a worthwhile use of tax payer funds IMO.

Excellent! This will make it that much easier for those times I have to use Tampa as an arrival point because there wasn't any frequent flier points seats left going into Orlando!

This is awesome news. I watched a documentary on high speed rails in Japan and they seemed really neat. I also like this because my mom lives just outside Tampa and when I visit Disney for the day I usually stay at Mom's and drive to Orlando. This would be a fun way to make the trip.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. The stimulus funds should be used for something concrete and long-lasting as HSR. There's no reason it couldn't be as sucsessful as in Europe or Asia. We once had a strong relationship with the railroad before the advent of the V8 and semi. It would be nice to see us return a little to those roots.....

I agree only if it makes financial sense. Europe and Japan are very different from the USA in many ways. Not the least of which are the distances between cities. It may be that we find the automobile is far more efficient than HSR. But, as I said, this will be a great test case. If it is viable, industry will step in and make it happen in cooperation with the government. And that is as it should be.
