Well, I've managed to not know a thing about High School Musical, until last week when DD announced that our high school drama club would be performing it this year. Guess I'll have to see what all the fuss is about:shrug:
or hurt the feelings of half the cast!!! (most of them call me "Mom", too!!)

LOL! I've actually never seen anything but the video clips from the movie, as DD is only 5 and doesn't have a real interest in it. However, I find the tunes so catchy that I actually burned a copy of the soundtrack today...you'll have fun seeing the production. Wish one of my local high schools was doing it!

My daughter came home a couple of weeks ago from Drama Club tryout and said only about 10 people tried off for the Little Mermaid. The Director changed it to HSM and the number jumped to over 70 people.

I hated any idea of HSM for the longest time and made fun of my friends who were so into it. Yet after they sat me down and forced me to watch it, I have to admit it's not *that* bad. I even have to say that I like a few of the songs (*gasp*). We went to watch the Pep Rally at MGM and we were singing along with the performers and acting like we were 5 - it was great.

It's not as bad as you think... It's cheesy as anything, but it's fun and if it gets kids interested in theatre, then I'm all for it.

Hey there, I sat down with some of my younger friends and was treated to a showing. Not a bad little flick. It wont win an Academy award or anything but it was a cute movie. While you are watching it think about a movie from our time called "Grease" There are MANY similarities from the whole high school thing to the musical parts of it to the storyline. Belle

Grease it's not. It has not the musical content and the "like toe-tally, like you know like toe-tally like annoying like toe-tally spoilt like kid like grate toe-tally on like anyone who is like toe-tally older than like fourteen and a half. Like....toe-tally."

It's not a bad bit of chewing gum, but fails to reach the wider audience that Grease appeals to.

It'll be fleeced for all it's worth right now, but I can't see it having the endurance of other musical shows.

A good friend of mine had the lead in a HSM high school play. They'd won state competitions as a regular occurrence, and they didn't disappoint. :sohappy:

I've never seen the movie the whole way through, but my sis watches it enough for 10 people. "Viewed by osmosis".

I've seen Grease elevendy-million times and still enjoy it - apparently teenagers from the 50's aren't as annoying to an old woman like me (or maybe it's the music!! )
From the bits and pieces of rehearsals I've seen, I think one dose of HSM will be enough for me. And god forbid I get any of those songs stuck in my head - I'd rather hum It's A Small World all day long!!!:ROFLOL: :ROFLOL:

I compare it to Grease in the sense of a girl meeting a boy at a resort. Cut to beginning of school year and here in girl transferring into Boy's HS without knowing it. Boy is a jock and wouldnt ever THINK of telling his friends he can be more. Those are the similar themes that I was referring to. I dont think I could watch it as many times as I have seen Grease, but I also didnt walk out on the movie either. It was a cute movie. Obviously enough teens/ tweens etc agree as they are making a HSM II. Belle

I caught a little community theater production of the stage version when I was in Atlanta last month, and I must say that way they reworked the film is superb. If you haven't seen the movie and enjoy theater it will still seem very kitchy... however the adapters did a great job of fleshing out the characters and a bit of the story. Sharpey now has a motive to her cattiness, "Status Quo" covers both sides of the argument, and they add a couple of new songs.

Granted I love the film, but I'm a huge fan of musicals (especially stage ones) and the HSM musical on the stage is great. I would honestly love to see a true "Disney" production of it on tour, as it would be a huge hit.

Joe, if you get a chance check out the stage version. You would appreciate the changes. It's still not the full-fledged musical that we would pay $70 a ticket for, but it's a whole lot more legitimate than the film.

I'm curious to see "Haunted High School Musical"...

The youth drama group I was once a member of put it forward as their next production, but the director wanted nothing to do with it. They are doing "Grand Hotel" instead

Wow... that's a shame.

High School Musical has a much larger target audience.

Oh well, c'est la vie.
