How to "lessen the blow" of leaving WDW?

I hate leaving  I have to do like a personal pep talk -- I have to tell myself that we've done all the rides we wanted, so to stay would just be repeating ourselves; that we've bought the merchandise we wanted, and we will need to wait to come back until there are new things to get; that our dogs are home missing us; and how it will be nice to sleep in our own beds and each have our space back (and separate bathrooms). That helps me process it a bit better.

Add a 3 day cruise on the 7 day WDW trip. You wont have time to miss WDW, you will be planning to catch the magical express to Port Canaveral.

Very thin. about 2-1/8" wide and 3-3/8" long. It has your personal number on it (a group of 16 numerals broken up into 4 groups of 4 digits). The word CHASE usually in the upper right corner. A Disney theme of your choice is the design or artwork. On the back is a magnetic strip and a place for you to sign your name.
I'm glad you're being specific, because the last attractive cashier told me "strip down, face toward her". She meant the card. ;)

For us Its a MUST that we go to MK on our last day. MK feels more Disney than any other park so we HAVE TO GO to get every last bit of park magic that we can absorb. I always drop coins in Cinderellas wishing well to wish for a return trip. We hit all our favorite rides and grab all the unused snack credit snacks to bring home. We always have purchases we have delivered from the parks to our home so after returning home we get a touch of Disney when the Disney boxes arrive. I also mail myself a few post cards to myself from my resort and the parks. The last day I do splurge and buy something special for myself & DW. I also buy a few small items that I have bagged up and wont open until after we have been home a while. The very worst is when we hit Rte 4 and we pass out of Orlando... then it hits that the trip is over for real. The rest of the trip home DW & I discuss the highlights of the trip, things we want to do when we return and things we missed doing. When its over we dont look back but forward to the next trip.

For those of us who love Disney World, leaving on that last day is always a bummer. I've learned to not make MK our last day because my wife has a hard time walking out past that beautiful castle and down Main Street. It's a little easier when our last day is AK or HS :)

What other things do you do to make leaving WDW at the end of a fun trip not so bad?

Make the last night a MK fireworks night. Wife (ok me too) loves fireworks and MK fireworks have spoiled us to others.
Get a mickey shaped treat on the way out of whatever park we're in the day we're leaving.
Make sure we're going home with a oversized Mickey sharped rice krispy treat. (Yeah it's something easy to just make at home, and overpriced to buy in MK, but its Mickey shaped and can travel and last a few days at home.)
Start planning the next trip. ;-)

Our last day has evolved...was Epcot WS when we were kidless. Then MK when they were younger, now seems like every trip ends in Pandora. My wife and I always have either a trip just for us or a drunken couples trip planned for within a month or 2 of when we get home. There are more than a few times at Disney where we look at each other and say "3 weeks till no kids!" with only our eyes.

We typically go to MK on our last day, and book a 7:30 pm flight out of MCO. We try to stay in the park as late as possible and usually end up running out of the park to our car to race to the airport. The fear of missing our flight distracts us from the sadness of leaving the park. The depression usually sets in on the monorail to the gates at MCO...

Before we moved back to the mainland, bought APs, and began visiting WDW every 2-3 months, it was hard on that last day, for sure. To make it easier, as the crowds fought each other for the boat or monorail, we would get ice cream, sit in the hub, and watch the castle & Kiss Goodnight while we discussed when would return. Even if we did not already have reservations, it helped knowing we had plans for our next trip. Also, it helped to have something fun planned for when we returned home, be it small or big.

MK was always the last park we visited. It's our favorite and we'd rather be there than any other park, so it's a great way to end our trip.

Go when it is super crowded? ...which is like most times nowadays?

The last time we left, it was so dang-awful crowded, it was almost a relief. Definitely not the grief of prior visits. So much so, we have never been back. I'd like to return, but just cannot reconcile the crowd levels with the pricetag.
  • High crowd levels and cheap - ok.
  • Low crowd levels and cheap - ok.
  • Low crowd levels and expensive - ok.
  • High crowd levels and expensive - what-the-heck-no.

The human mind is funny in this regard. You tend to forget the miseries and only remember the good parts. I am trying to not forget the writhing masses of smelly sweaty scooting cranky humanity all around me last visit. ...the memory is starting to fade. I fear my time to return may be coming up. Quick! I need a distraction! Disney Cruise! There we go. Yea, I need to stick with DCL. That had a lot of the magic without the crowds. ...still had the pricetag tho.... :p

Back when I was single, I would go to WDW for a few days on my own if work brought me to the Orlando area.

I always booked an evening flight out. I would go to a park in the morning (I had an AP, so not really a wasted day) then go back to the resort and hang out by the pool all afternoon. I would read, swim, snooze, have a few beverages, and then eat an early dinner at the resort restaurant before heading out on DME. It was a way to wind down and go home in a relaxed way. It was even better at SSR back when they let DVC members have access to the spa facilities. Showers, lockers, toiletries, etc. I could shower and change in comfort before dinner and DME

MK is the park for our last day. Hit our favorite rides, wander through the Emporium and shop. Our final stop is the meet and greet with Micky. Then head back to the POR, and pack the truck for the depressing drive back to NY.

To WDW or Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise was Thanksgiving week. Cost me about $9,000. 😧

The most eloquent captains speech I have ever heard was just prior to eating Thanksgiving dinner. It was really good, very few dry eyes in the dining room.

WDW I usually went in May, Oct, and Dec. Never dared the summer months. Well, not since I was in my teens.

last trip, i cant remember our last park, but this short long weekend in September will be EPCOT. It was my first Disney experience as a kid, and still my favorite to this day. One last viewing of Illuminations for me will close out the trip. Im sure we will curse at the Disney card balance from such a short trip, and plan the next short trip on the way back, to help keep each other awake in the car.

Book another trip before you leave?
Agreed. Always have another trip planned and possibly booked if possible.
I normally make sure our last day we have a late flight. I did that this time with Southwest, but maintenance of their 737 Max planes messed up my plans. They eliminated all late night flight in October and now stuck taking a 5 pm flight. Such a bummer
