How Much Walking Per Day

I really think that our max is about 12-13 miles according to my pedometer (which is not particularly sensitive and does not count "shuffling" steps) and my own estimate on its margin of error. I think 10 miles is more like our average, and I think we walk more than the average tourist does.

Although I don't doubt any single person, I do think the amount of walking done at WDW is generally over-estimated. I haven't personally measured anything, of course. Just my guess.

Agreed, my Mum took her pedometer last year and we were clocking anywhere between 10,000 - 30,000 steps park depending. 10,000 would be considered an easy day at the shops and Malls :) Like someone said above, all those little toilet breaks and just going to the food hall in a Disney hotel can all add up to a lot of walking... This year i have my Samsung Galaxy S4 which has a pedometer in-built, and that calculates and allows for walking/running/steps and puts it all into graphs and miles vs calories *Nerd* ;)

I should also add that, in terms of justifying what to eat, even on days where I walk 30k+ steps, less than an hour of that is recorded as "aerobic" steps. I doubt I'm burning that many more calories than I do in a normal day at home.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)

Your body burns calories whether your doing "aerobic" activity or not so all that walking is burning more than you think. Aerobic activity just means in that hour is when you heart/cardio system got a workout of which is burning "fat" and does not solely determine how many calories you would be burning all day. You could be burning more calories than norm just not burning more fat. Your body while sitting burns calories so if most of the day you are walking/standing (even standing sill vs sitting burns more calories) then you are naturally burning more. We eat a TON of extra calories while in Disney and NEVER gain a pound so aerobic or not we must be burning enough to keep all those many calories burned off. We easily are doubling or more of our normal calorie intake each day while there! If i ate like i do at disney at home while in my normal routine i would easily gain 5-10 pounds! My DH works out regularly 5 days a week at home for about 2 hours total with an hour solely for cardio just to keep his weight in check at home and we watch what we eat. So if he is keeping weight off with eating double the calories on vacay and not working out then alot more calories than an hour of aerobic activity is being burned. That is just our opinion and experience. :)

@sxeensweet I understand how burning calories works, but I really don't think that the the 10-ish miles of moseying I do at Disney World does much more for me than the daily cardio I do at home that gets skipped while I'm in the World. I'm not running three times a week while I'm there, nor doing my daily 2-5 mile power walks. I really don't think "all that walking" that happens at Disney World means much to active people.

@draybook I'm too forgetful to do GPS! I'd forget to turn it off on rides.

I didn't mean you don't know how it works I was just trying to explain my point of view. We are active folks esp the hubby and he works out at least 5 days a week and sometimes 7 days a week for 2 hours a day 1 hr weight training and 1 hour cardio. He cannot eventhough he Is very active at home eat like we do in Disney and not put on weight. If he has a bad week splurging at home he puts on weight. He splurges every day all day for 10+ days in Disney and even loses a few pounds while in the world with no daily workouts like at home. So that is not necessarily true for all saying active folks don't really see a difference being in Disney. He doubles his calorie intake at least every day in Disney and he loses weight and I do the same and just don't gain. Like I said if we did the same type of eating at home eventhough esp my DH is very active we both would gain weight. So more must be happening calorie loss wise while in Disney at least for us. That's all I was trying to get across. :)

I tried to use an app, but it was a pain to stop at every ride, so I gave up. I think disney should make their own app to allow you to track your walking throught the day and it could sence when you are on a ride so it stops automatically. This could promote how healthy going to disney actually is and it could have a leader board to see who walks the most in one day there.

I totally agree with @Sweet Melissa! I may walk 10-20 miles there, but it's done at a pretty slllllow pace. I work out every single day, for around 2 hours per day. I do both cardio and weight training. No WAY is the meandering people do at WDW anything like the 6-7 mile walks my family takes, or my 20 mile + bike rides (stationary...haha).

But while I dont worry tooooo much about food while on vacation, i do worry about working out. And I dont consider time at the parks a "work out" : )

Forget about how far the walk is, just rent a scooter, and run over toes.:D But on a serious side, I would say we average per day about 7 miles, while at WDW.

You burn as many calories walking 10 miles as you do running 10 miles.

I work out several times a week but definitely burn more calories during a week at Disney. I averaged over 8 miles of walking a day over 8 days. 64 miles in one week - don't even come close to that on a good normal "work-out" week. Plus we spent time in the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon - that is a workout in of itself, especially going out in the deep end and swimming. Now I will consume many more calories but on our last trip 2 weeks ago I actually lost 2 pounds.

We use fibits. We don't get under 18 miles a day.
You walk more than 18 miles a day at WDW? Do you ever stop for rides or just walk continuously? The average walking speed is about 3 miles an hour. To walk 20 miles in a single day you'd have to walk 7 straight hours at 3mph without ever stopping for a ride, eating, bathroom, parade, etc.

DH and I have fitbits and while we were at Disney World over Christmas we were taking 30,000+ steps per day. Assuming 10,000 steps is about 5 miles, that's around 15 miles in a day. I know the WS loop is a mile.
I now have a fitbit and can't wait to see what I can do when in the parks.... went hiking at Bushkill Falls in PA over the weekend and it said I did the equivalent of 46 floors. The total floors for the day was 78.... Disney will easily be my best steps per day....am excited to try it!

That isn't true. You exert more energy running than you do walking, which burns more calories.

I stand corrected. That is true, running burns more calories.

I'll still burn much more calories in WDW than at home. I'm also carrying more weight - camera, shoulder-bar or backpack, wallet, watch, phone, mug, etc. That stuff does add up.
