OK, I'm buying my first home.

My soon to be wife and I are already running through decorating ideas for the home. Here's the problem. I love Disney, but not as much as she does. And this might be a problem.

How much is to much when you decorate your home with Disney "artifacts"?

Please include pictures if you can on what you think is tasteless and tastefull.

Dude, when she says it's too much, it's too much. Remember, this is going to be her first home and it's important to her how it's decorated. Don't overwhelm her and work the Disney stuff in as you get the chance. We tend to group our Disney stuff together, i.e., all Disney stuff/artifacts on top of the entertainment center in our bedroom or Disney pictures on top of the TV center in the living room. It's not gaudy, but people know that we are Disney fans.

Good luck!

I have a few things here and there. My DH isn't as into Disney as my daughters and I are. A few towels, a print, etc. I have a shelf in my livingroom with 2 picture frames, a Space Earth replica, a NY Yankee Mickey and a totem Pole from the Wilderness Lodge and my magnet collection on the fridge. Let her decide what she wants and where. Then hope you can convert her to our way of thinking.

I think movie stills and nice paintings are okay, but when you start to get stuffed animals and really colorful things then it's too much (unless of course you have kids)

Note : I think he's saying he's not as crazy about Disney as his wife, so he's wondering how he'll control her design tastes

You really know when to stop when it starts too look really kitch and incredibly over the top, Though your home is your home, so its gotta be to your own tastes and no one elses, i sit in a home now decorated to all laura ashely, cus my moms a laura ashley nut, but then my room is incredibly minimalistic and white/blue. Its just my style and what i want to express...

go with more of like a theme etc, if you like Disney so much decorate it to a more ye olde world style, like many of the main street shops, and have certain Disney objects on Display, but not too many :) oh and remember, when placing things together 3 is the best

good luck on decorating your new home! :)

You might suggest that she limit the "theme" to one or two appropriate rooms, then store the rest.

I've collected frogs since I was 12, which is a lot of frogs. ;) I limited myself (actually, it was more of a strong suggestion on my husband's part  ) to scattering a few around the kitchen and guest bathroom, then storing the rest.

Fortunately, my son inherited my affinity for amphibians (and reptiles) so his room is decorated with them now. You could do the same if children come along. (my son had a classic Disney nursery)

little is good....

I LOVE Disney....but i also understand that I want to be able to enjoy my visits while im there. If I had my house with only Disney Decor....it would just be to to much for me. Its liking living at WDW. I have a friend who not only has the whole house with Disney decor....but also his patio/outdoor stuff and even a Mickey Head Pond with fishes. Its just to much for me. Hes happy with it and has been living like that for over 7 years. So you see for some its great.

I again have a few items and most are x-mas items which I bring out druing the holidays.

I think you should let her have maybe a room she can do a Disney theme in. Maybe a bathroom or a guest room. But most important is communication. Talk with her and try to find a solution you both can work with.

I think a home should have decor to make you feel good...and if she wants a few items, what the hell...not worth fighting over.

I also think a bathroom or guest room would be a good idea. Do you have a room that you use for a office/computer room? That would be a good room to decorate in disney.

Decorated

My whole Bathroom is Disney, my living room has a wall unit and one of the three wall units is decorated with all different Disney figurines and globes. My dinette has a hutch that has Disney collectible Plates and shot glasses and my kithcen has Disney plates, utensils, and bowls and cups. My compter room has just a couple of Disney artifacts and forget about Christmas. Our tree has only Disney ornaments, etc. We are Disney nuts and if you look at my house even though it sounds crazy you won't be overwhelmed by Disney because we only have certain spaces that has it (except for the bathroom). WE love it and believe me without it starting to look a little crazy we would have more.

Well I am a disney nut myself and have turned my hubby into one just not as much as me. Well, I have a tendancy to go overboard esp. when i get to the disney outlet in missouri. But I have limited myself. I have Winnie the Pooh in the kitchen but more as utensils and dishes, pooh is my favorite, so i have the musical toaster, the big green bowl set, some tea pots from our honeymoon and other visits (hubby started it so he can't complain about that one). I have character glasses that the kids use regularly. I am now in the process of letting the girls make their bathroom the Princess bathroom, it was already pink and white so that helped. Two out of four bedrooms are disney. My husband put his foot down though when i wanted to order the king size pooh bear floral print quilt set and accessories for our bedroom! He said I could have it but if i did get it he would be sleeping in the guest bedroom ;) so I didn't get it. Although I as soon as I am done w/ the girls bathroom he said we can do our bathroom in black and white w/mickey accessories so i am happy about that. Needless to say we have bits of things here and there. one long wall to the bedrooms has framed photos of trips/character photos w/ the girls etc. so as time goes by you'll probably add more. soemtimes less is more, we don't have loads of knick knacks, well aside from all the princess things the girls have. good luck and congratulations on becoming a new homeowner!

I agree with everyone else, you just need to pick one room and make that your Disney room. This will be especially good since your wife is not as into Disney as you are.

My ex had a Nascar room that was filled from ceiling to floor with nascar stuff. Die cast cars, posters, cutouts, tires, etc....

Now I have a new house and I have my collection of snowglobes in two diff rooms. Disney knick-knacks here and there. I am planning on turning one of my bathrooms into a Disney bathroom:lol:

Yep...one room is enough!

Better stop it now before you regret it!

It's fair to have a room totally devoted to something she likes (Disney) as well as one decorated to something you like, whatever that may be. the rest of the house should be neutral, as that will be the area where you will spend most of your time.

It's much easier (and less painful!) to lay down the law now, rather than have to try and clear it up later!

I also agree. It would be very unique to devote one room to all your Disney collectibles. When you show it off to your guests, they will surely be impressed! lol (Does that rhyme???) HAHAHAHAHA

It's what I plan to do whenever I buy my own home.....

Well...

I've brought it down to one room and one bathroom. That seems to be the compromise for now. But I'm affraid of the over-flow effect. You know, she ends up buying so much that she needs somewhere else to put it. We've already got some lithographs that I think will make the wall in a nice frame, but I'm affraid of it's gonna get out of hand.

Looks like my foot might need to come down at some point.

Dude:

My office was decorated around the theme of Mickey. The walls are stripped purpled and there are 258 stamped mickey heads on the walls. Also Mickey's 2 gloves are stamped somewhere in the room - a hidden mickey sort of. I have a mickey shaped mouse pad that I made, a mickey shaped topiary that I made complete with tail, pants, and shoes (really cute but tastfully done), a mickey shaped board for my disney pins, two shelves with blueprints of my two favorite attractions (Horizons and Spaceship Earth) a HUGE framed picture of 4 posters of the parks, and a blow up adult chair that is in the shape of mickey (its got the ears, the body of the chair is black, the seat is red with yellow buttons and it has his two yellow feet). Plus I also have my Disney stock framed and hung in the room. I even took down the light fixture that was in the room and replaced it with a light fixture that has 3 round light shades making up the mickey icon. In our guest bathroom downstairs, I bought the huge black mickey mirror in which it has the two ears, the white gloves holding the mirror, and his oragne shoes. I got this at Downtown Disney in the Disney At Home store. I also printed out and framed close ups of each of the parks icons but two pictures from Illuminations. It looks really cool. I'm waiting for the Mickey Patio table to go on sale to get it for next summer. People might think it's a bit much but let me tell you every time I step into this room, it brings me peace. I feel so calm in this room. Perhaps its the warm color of purple I painted the walls but I think it's the mickey's all over the place that does it for me.

Yeah I bought her the chair last year, but she also made me buy the ottoman. I'm not sure I'm gonna have any room for it though.

What colors do you guys think would fit well in a "Disney Room"? Keep in mind I'm putting up lithographs from several movies. And yes I know Red, Yellow, White, and Black (Mickey colors) would work.

Overflow is not a problem. I again have the guest room and one bathroom....and since I have so many things...every month or two, I change the decor. So the over flow is in boxes in the garage. Once in a while when Im sick of seeing the same things over and over, I change them. See....not a problem at all.
