My uncle served in both theaters of WWII on an LST like this one. He's 92 1/2 years old now. He's my daughter's guest speaker for her high school class this Friday since they just finished learning about that time period.
He was only 17 when he enlisted. He thought he would be on a huge warship and was placed on this ship as a radioman. He said they used to say LST stood for "long slow target". He wasn't there for D-Day itself, but he did deliver supplies there a week or so later. He then went over to the battle at Okinawa. His ship even survived kamikaze attacks.

WOW !!! I'm an old "navy brat" , my dad (87) was on a destroyer escort in korea and a sub-tender in very early nam. When I find an appropriate old naval pic, I often use it in my countdown. One of my favorite memories at WDW is my dad (always wearing his Destroyer Escort Sailor's Assoc. jacket) getting picked along with a desert storm vet in a wheelchair to preside over the evening retreat at MK. Still get choked up thinking about it. Give your uncle my best !
