Pappy Boyington model. Loved the Robert Conrad portrayal on TV.

Yep, and that’s why my granddaughters know me as their “Pappy”…!!!!!!! :joyfull:
I read his book, and watched the TV show, which was, of course, dramatized with Conrad, but still fun.
He was only in his 30’s during WWII, but most of the other pilots were in their early 20’s, so he was their “Pappy”.
And, he was known for choosing the most decrepit aircraft to fly out of the group, so the other pilots didn’t think he was playing favorites.
Ultimately, no matter what you thought of him, he got the job done, even though he was finally shot down and ended up a POW, but survived…!!! ;):)

I read the book also. He was of that generation that was all tough as nails and had no fear. He showed up as a character in three of the TV show as General Kenlay. He was interviewed once with Conrad and said Conrad was made for the role.

Yep, Pappy was definitely one scrappy dude, as was Conrad in his own right, for an actor that is. ;)
Pappy Boyington was no angel, but he was definitely the kinda’ stuff this country needed during that period of our history…!!!!!
