How many bags do you take on vacation?

Ok so if I'm totally honest and you have my feet over hot coals, I'll admit, traveling with me is like riding Cleopatra's barge. I am a chronic overpacker and I really believe women who go to Europe for a week and only take 2 pair of shoes are alien pod people, never to be trusted. ;)

my next trip to the world is mid April and I'm trying to get down to a very light carryon. I'm there for 4 days so I think I can do it.

For a week in the world, how many bags do you usually pack. even if you are driving but especially for those who fly?

I carried 2 bags, a suitcase & backpack, for 12 days in Europe. It was 26 pounds total. Think "camping in a hotel." Pants? Buy switchbacks--the legs zip off and on. Wash and wear clothes--do laundry in the sink and shirts are dry in the morning. Two pairs of shoes, max. Easy wash and dry underwear. Socks are the problem. I double up each day on socks to keep my feet happy, but regular socks take days to dry in the room. Will change that next trip. Check Amazon for shirts, pants, socks & underwear and EBags for the Weekender suitcase.

Me, my husband, and 3 year old are going in April for 4 days. I plan on taking 1 large bag, 1 small one, and a wine suitcase :)

I love it! What parents of a toddler DON'T need a wine case!??!

Because our next WDW vacation begins with 4 days onsite at Universal, we'll be taking a towncar from the airport (instead of our usual DME) and will have a stop at a nearby Publix "to buy bottled water." How sad is it that I've already: (1) visited that location's website to consult the store layout and find out exactly where the wine is; and (2) packed a "beach bag" expressly chosen for double-duty, because it can also hold couple of liters of water, AND a few bottles of wine? I feel like the world's most efficient lush.

Myself (mid 30's) and daughter (6). We use one of Eddie Bauer's Large rolling suitcases. Also packing cubes are a huge way to easily pack and layout outfits for the week, then handle laundry after.

We (hubby and I) like to go for a week and pack it all in a backpack each. A Vera Bradley campus backpack. I state the name only because of the size. It will also go as personal bag on frontier airlines (they have the smallest size restrictions). We pack for 8 days but no signature dining so no dress clothes. I recommend that you take inventory of what you took on your last trip and didn't use. Then just leave it behind. :) only need one shirt per day and half as many bottoms. Plus one extra shirt in case of an accidental spill. ie. 4days =5 shirts and 2 bottoms.
Hope this helps... °*°

We strive for carry-on only (and we get free checked bags). My wife and I can do 10 days out of a roll on suitcase each. She also carries a backpack and I carry a camera backpack. I've tried packing cubes and plastic packing vacuum bags, but I find the best technique is rubber bands. Rubber bands, compress the clothes, take up no room, are readily available and cheap. And factor in that you know you're going to buy a few tee shirts while you are there. May as well wear them.

However, one formal night with pants, jacket and shoes, and all is lost. We'll be waiting at the baggage carousel.

Ok GREAT question ! for one I have NO ANSWER for, I have given up fighting with the wife as to exactly what we need to take with us. We drive and as usual the back of my Ford Flex is packed to the MAX. The funny part always is when we return we realize that we haven't worn 75% of what we brought. This year we swear it will be different I will only take what we will wear, underwear of course, a few tee shirts, shorts and 1 dress shirt and pants, oh yes and a bathing suit. LOL !

We take as may bags as we can fit or can take without an extra charge. We've been know as the couple with all the bags on many trips. We always take one bag full of food. When empty we use it for purchases. Always Be Prepared.

Four days? One wheelie carry-on plus one backpack per person.
A week? Our family of 4 would try to take only one checked bag to avoid fees plus one wheelie carry-on and backpack per person.
