We are staying at Disney's Old Key West in Feb. How far of a drive is it to Universal? Can we rent a car at the hotel? Is it worth the time?
Thanks!

Disney transportation is quite good. There are buses to everything. Don't know why you'd need to rent a car especially just to visit one park. Let WDW transportation handle it for you.

Anywhere from 20-30 minutes i would say, if you dont know where you are going. From OKW take I-4 east and you should see all the signs leading to it, also you could ask the front desk for a map or help.

No absolutely not. Mears will pick you up from OKW and drop you back off at night for a fee but why would Disney provider transportation to their competition??   Belle

I was there last week and the trip from the Downtown Disney area (near OKW) to Universal took about 15 minutes. Note, traffic was flowing on I-4. As with any interstate... it's often slow around the attractions.

You can call a cab. I don't know how much it will run, but it might be cheaper than Mears. Calling a cab also allows you to return when you want, and not when it's scheduled.

Disney to Universal is a 15 mile trip.

There are also back roads if I 4 is jammed.

It's not worth renting a car simply to drive yourself to Universal. One thing about Mears is that after they pick you up, you run the risk of having to stop at other resorts (both Disney & non-Disney) to pick others up. I tried this once and was 1 1/2 late getting to Universal. I'd recommend just calling a cab/limo service. Remember you also just pay for the cab itself, not a per person rate like Mears.

Very good point about the per person charge on Mears. I defer to my colleague's wisdom in this matter!!! Belle

I knew that, it was sort of a sarcastic question aimed at Nansafan's comment:

Obviously, Disney providing trans to competition would be like shooting yourself in the foot. :)

How are you getting to your hotel from the airport? I'm assuming you're flying since you won't already have a car. How many people are in your group? If you're taking Mears from the airport to your hotel, it may be cheaper to just rent a car from the airport. I know many others would rather not rent cars, but my family always finds it cheaper to rent one from the airport. One year we priced it, and a weeks rate for car rental was cheaper for us than 4 people round trip through Mears. Plus, we could come and go as we pleased. It's especially worthwhile if you're planning to do any off-property activities (like Universal). You can grab some food off-property if you like too. Then, you can leave whenever you actually need to, to head back to the airport versus leaving an hour and a half early to allow for Mears stops. You may want to at least look into it. I'm not sure about pricing now, since the year we first did this was 1997. Now, we can't imagine not having a car. I actually paid extra fees to rent one on my solo summer trip (I'm not yet 25, but couldn't imagine not having a car. I need to be able to run to Wal-Mart if necessary, plus I was also there for a conference and wouldn't have had Disney Transports the entire trip).

If you wanted to just rent for the day, Disney has an on-property rental location with Enterprise (I think). It's located near the Car Care Center (where my car unfortunately spent 2 and a half weeks during my cp), which is near the MK. Just be careful if you ever have Enterprise pick you up. I had a car accident last week because an Enterprise driver pulled out just a couple of feet in front of me on wet roads because he "thought he could make it." I couldn't stop, and pow. The worst part is that the family he was taking to their rental car was a couple that was expecting their first child. The wife was about 10 days from her due date. I was more worried about the mom-to-be and her baby than my car. Bumpers can be fixed.
