How does D.land's compensation for new CMs contrast with this?

This thread reminds me of the hilarity we shared a few years ago. Business Insider did a fawning puff piece on a Disneyland exec, with his valuable "insight on Disneyland's culture".

As part of that article they actually had a photo of the exec cutting the ribbon on a lavish new "Break Area" behind Pixar Pier. It was a covered patio with cement floors, metal chairs, and a couple of Coke machines. Also four lightbulbs and two oscillating fans.

The gaggle of TDA cubicle farmers clustered around the Exec trying to get some of his superiority to rub off on them is perfection.

TDA actually approved this photo to be used in a national media publication as an example of employee amenities in Anaheim. Think about that. You can't even be embarassed for them because they are so clueless.

Have you seen the Disney CM hiring ads in the OCR? They have "weekly paychecks" as one of the job benefits. I'd call it renumeration for services rendered.

I had no idea this article was a thing I've met that guy a couple times 😂

He's actually a decent dude and really friendly from the brief interactions I had with him.

But this article is ridiculously out of touch 😂

Agreed. He seemed likable from that article. But the article's merit to us here isn't about that one guy at all. He's just the messenger.

The real story is about an entire leadership organization of a wildly profitable business that thinks that Break Area is something worth cutting a ribbon about. And allows photographs of it to appear in a national business publication.

It's sad and pathetic, but there they are. With Woody and Jessie, hilariously. 🤣

Before I continue, do you know how badly I want to send the TDA cubicle farmers and even the Exec with the oversize novelty scissors to my tailor to get their trousers hemmed and tailored properly?! Seriously guys, I'll pay. My treat. The tailoring is on me. Just promise to not pose for photos looking like a teenager wearing their dad's off-the-rack slacks ever again.

Private Message me here, gentlemen, and we'll set up the tailoring appointment.

Okay, now that I got that offf my chest...

What does that even mean? It seems to imply their unskilled entry-level jobs are paid at such a low wage that you would need weekly paychecks in order to survive. If you pause more than a few moments to understand what they are saying there, it gets really sad really fast.

Weekly paychecks and a break area with metal furniture and a Coke machine, plus two oscillating fans.

The out-of-touch and idiotic executive judgment it takes to publicly admit to both of those concepts is stunning. And telling.

The food struggles of DCP CMs are not easily solvable by hitting up McDonald's.

Folks are missing the bigger point and the principle.
But let us all agree that they are not on an island. There are regular busses to Walmart and other stores. There is always the cool kid with a car (hopefully one of your roommates). 5 times $6 burgers is $30. You will not eat gourmet with that but the CP shuttles at WDW go to Aldi too. You can get some sandwich stuff or ramen not to mention raviolis which got me thru college. Potato starch is also your cheap friend. I seriously doubt anyone would make the claim that buying Disney fast food was cheaper than buying groceries and bringing your own food. Before anyone asks one of my daughters did CP twice before we were locals.

I'm not referring to WDW, I'm referring to the DLR, given we're in the DLR forum.

Again, not as simple as you're making it. And again, it's not just the food insecurities that made DCP not fun. But unless you did the program for yourself, then you'll never truly understand.

I absolutely get both of your points.

There's a part of me that would love for Disney's theme parks to subsidize their on-site employee food service just like so many other successful businesses do nowadays to keep employee morale high; Google, Nike, Disney Studios, even the US Armed Forces.

And yet, if we are talking about college program kids... yeah, there are grocery stores near every college program housing facility that offers groceries at vastly cheaper prices than it would cost to buy a cheeseburger at work. It doesn't sound like Disneyland's College Program has restarted, but when it was a thing according to a friend in commercial real estate, their apartments were right next to a Vons (a standard American supermarket in SoCal) and within quick driving distance of a Costco, Sam's Club, a WalMart grocery store, etc.

TDA has obviously let their employee food service devolve into a crummy experience of greasy chicken strips and soggy fries, served at not-cheap prices to wring out a profit from the CM's doing all the hard work.

Yet at some point, once they leave Disney property, those CM's have to take ownership of their lives and figure out how to buy cheap groceries for their own pantry.

I have never done it myself but we were in pretty close communication with our child. Neither her or her roommates were starving to death. In fact they seemed to find some money to party a bit. Maybe some budget better than others. I cannot speak to DLR but I would assume it is about the same.

The fact that most American college kids all have smartphones (with vastly more computing power in their pocket than NASA had when it sent men to the moon 50 years ago) connected to the Internet (which didn't even exist for civilians 30 years ago) tells me that they aren't going to starve to death.

Will they dine on chauteaubriand and organic quail's eggs each night? No. They will eat a lot of mac n' cheese and Top Ramen, like college kids have done for decades.

Somehow though, there's always enough money to pull together to buy at least a pony keg on Saturday. Funny how that works. 😁

Amen brother! I still love PB&J and mac & cheese with hotdogs today. We budgeted our money to eat so we had money to drink on the weekends. It didn't hurt I played in a band and sometimes a bar would not offer us pay, but all we could drink.

It’s not the same, actually. And as you stated, you never did the program.

Good for your daughters. As I stated, my roommates and I were eating peanut butter, boxed rice, and mashed potatoes. Never said we were “starving to death.”

You know, I live a comfortable life.

But sometimes at Midnight there's nothing better than some Top Ramen with a scrambled egg on top. 😁

I hate rice, but I ate a ton of ramen, raviolis, and mac & cheese for 4 years in college along with a ton of potatoes. How is this any different? College kids suffer a bit to get a decent (hopefully) education to get a good job and live a better life. There are people out there who do not have food to eat. This discussion on cheese burgers came from a poster talked about his daughter in CP at WDW. So at that point I thought WDW CP was relevant. I know you have a chip on your shoulder about your time in DLR CP but did you not research your income? Your housing costs? Were you lied to, or did you just go into it with unrealistic expectations? My daughter had a blast so much she did it a second time, which I don't believe is that unusual. 2 of her 6 roommates repeated also.

It’s much different, but again, I don’t expect you to understand. I’ve actually done both traditional college and the Disney College Program and can attest to the different experiences. Again, it’s more than just food insecurities and I’m speaking about a larger principle. I’m not going to get into what exactly I’m talking about because I’m sure I’m going to be gaslit and my experiences will be dismissed. But I challenge you to take $40-60 per week, maybe less, and spread that over seven days while shopping at your local Vons for groceries. You’ll need some of that for your early morning cab rides back to your apartment from work and will also need to save some for other expenses, such as feminine care, potential hospital visits, etc. All while doing a whole bunch of other wild s**t and working for an insanely demanding company.

I don’t have a chip on my shoulder. I encourage every person who wants to do the DCP to do it. Again, good for your daughters. And the roommates as well. Cool beans.
