How do people from the UK deal with the long flights?

I've been going to Florida for many years and still do. Now I find that the flight doesn't bother me, but when I was younger it used to feel like a lifetime and I would be bored out of my skull.

So for all you brits out there, how do you and your family cope?

Fly Virgin!
We've been for the past 2 years, mr daughter being 2 and then 3 years old. We always travel Virgin as they have the best on board entertainment for kids, I think anyway.
The seats are a comfortable size and we always try to move and spread out if the plane has a few extra spare seats, especially on the way home.
Also we pack her trolly case with loads of things to keep her happy and a surprise gift for after take off.
we also let her walk round the aircraft and that can take some time!
On the return trip we try to get her to stay awake all day so after food she will be asleep and she slept through till breakfast!

The flights never actually bother me. Thanks to all the entertainment on board, the flight feels faster than times when I've been to italy / spain etc.

I just like to sit down, check out whats going to be on the TV and enjoy. I always take a book or magazine with me and I usually load a film or two onto my phone for watching incase I don't like what's showing. Of course, you can't beat checking over your plans and reading your unofficial guide!

I totally agree. We go every time with Virgin and have found them to be great. One thing we always do as well is go preimum rather than coach. This definitley makes the trip more comfortable and we always go in the premium lounger before we fly so you are in a relaxed mind set. Dont really bother with alcohol on the flight as I am doing busy watching all the movies and playing games. :sohappy:

We go Virgin too! They are great for the kids, lots of entertainment, great food and as I don't really like flying they make me feel at ease. Reading, playing cards, etc passes the time as well but really and truthfully you don't notice how long it is it goes by so quickly. :ROFLOL:

We're flying with continental this year as it was more cost effective. I usually just enjoy the experience now of sitting and getting all the free coffee that's going and snacking :)

We usually spend first bit getting organised and reading in-flight mags for films etc, then you get meal, then watch a film then time for a snack then play games or try and have a sleep if the kids shattered, then another movie and then time to get sorted out / clear away rubbish and you there!

In saying that, we normally been up since 3am so a little nap does happen at some stage!!

Heading for the great escape.
I tend to read, last year I read a Clarkson and a classic rock. I keep an eye on the map making sure the pilot is keeping good speed and direction. Go for a stroll every 30 mins or so to avoid DVT.

No bevvy, driving at the other end.

I don't know...but I am guessing alcohol, alcohol, alcohol. :)

Yes, but then it's bathroom, bathroom, bathroom! I did this last year from Orlando to Munich in route to Oktoberfest! It was fun, but I hate the bathrooms on the plane.

I bought a PSP and downloaded a bunch of shows like Family Guy, Simpsons, and the Office. That took a lot of time and I played Madden. That took care of the long flight there, but coming back, it was the same thing again, so just another season of Madden!

I'm curious, how long is the flight?

From Gatwick Airport

9 hours there
10 hours back or the other way around.

I fly virgin too!
Virgins Rock:lookaroun

For me I have a few ways of dealing with it

- On board Films and Tv
I can't wait for the films on board when I go in october, they rock
I usually watch them a few times especially if they're good, especially family guy.

- Ipod
Usually lasts a couple of hours, and I put a few films on there as well.

- Books
Autobiographies and Magazines. I stock up magazines in the airport or beforehand. I also take a disney book or two.

- Sleep
Only for about half an hour cause I hate sleeping on the plane seats.

- Food
The virgin inflight food sucks, so i sneak a few treats on board:lookaroun

- Games
Theres games on the TV in virgin flights so I go on them.

As im only 15 Im just excited anyway about going to florida.

I would love to know what an average ticket price - Orlando to England - is these days.

We are considering a trip to the UK next summer. I had a little sticker shock yesterday when I looked up tickets!

My usual onboard "Survival kit" contains:-

My PSP
My DS for when PSP goes flat.
My iPod (now my iPhone)
A Book
A note book (for writing ideas and stuff)
A Japanese note book of sorts for revising
Thats enough stuff to get me there and back to be honest.

My BF just falls asleep, so I have to entertain myself.

We paid £410 to fly with Monarch from Cardiff to Sanford.

It tends to take 8.30/9 hours from UK to Orlando, and about 7.30/8 back.

Its dull, hard work, but its worth it, one day I hope I'll make that flight for the last time.

It depends on the time of year - if your trip coincides with any of the school holidays then the prices can almost double !!!!

Its costing us around $1000 per adult for a return flight on Christmas Day, returning January 3rd. If we'd flown a few days earlier that would have increased by around $600 per adult.

We leave 2moro and we fly with virgin i hate flying scared stiff but i have a five year old i stay brave for:lookaroun and now we are taking our 10 month old on his first trip so i think this flight is going to be a bit more difficult ,with a baby who doesn.t want to sit still for five mins but it might make the trip go a bit quicker
