How did the old monorails look?

My mother was telling me that the monorails operating at MGM in Las Vegas were the original WDW monorails but, I don't remember ever seeing ugly square monorails. Does anyone have a picture of the 70's monorails?

The monorails you are thinking of in Vegas are not the former Disney trains. The former Disney trains ran from MGM to Bally's, and are now out of service.

Basically, the looked the same. The main difference was that they had 5 doors per car, per side, and you sat -- no standees.

Also, as I recall, the doors did not close automatically. CM's on the platform had to close each and every door before the train started into motion. Isn't that correct?

I'm pretty sure the old monorails didn't have double doors, they were more like car doors that opened one way, and yeah, the monorail CM's had to walk along and shut all the doors by hand.

Yep, the Mark 3 (or was it 4) had single doors that popped open on a hinge. The CM could open the doors on each carriage remotley (from buttons on the outside, by the drivers door I think) but they had to be closed manually. If I remember too, there was a slight hump above the cabins with the strobe light ontop. I`m sure one of our resident pilots here can fill you in better.

I do remember the cast members having to manually close the doors. I was like 8 or 9 years old and my parents always brought me in July. I remember wanting the cm's to hurry up and close the door because it was soooo hot and we were wanting that A/C to kick in on the monorail. Gosh, that is why I love this sight. I had completely forgotten that along with many others this websight brings back to me. Thanks! :sohappy:

This first monorals they used at Vegas were refrub'd Disney monrails.
They were the same ones used int eh 70's and 80's at wdw. The single door, single row seat design.

I have two pictures of the re-furb'd from vegas.

They now have the brand new design at vegas that disney does not use.

I'll never forget the sounds of the CM's closing the doors when i was a little kid. the clickiking is one of those Disney memories that will stick with me forever. It meant we were on our way to the magic kingdom!

Cars had rows of seats, and each row had a door on both sides.

Two old WDW monorail trains were used by te Bally's-MGM route until 1 or 2 years ago, when they were torn out for the monorail now open or under construction.

Does anyone know what happend to the front of monorail purple cab that used to be by the CR convention center you could see it from the monorail as you entered, sometimes it had a tarp over it, but now all you see is more white chairs there?

front cab from purple monorail

When I was at the Contemporary last summer I saw it there for the first 3 weeks or so of my trip but I realized that it was gone during the last 2 weeks of my trip. I then saw it while riding the monorail through the contemporary. It was under a cover in the cast parking lot near the south wing and the canal.
